WHO WE ARE

The Tika Vaani collaboration brings together research, technology, and
implementation partners united by a common vision: to create and evaluate
impactful innovations to accelerate health equity and improve the lives of those
at the bottom of the pyramid.

Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals pledge to prioritize the needs
and rights of vulnerable populations so that no one is left behind, we
partner with rural communities in India to build healthier futures.

“Tika Vaani” means “vaccine voice” in Hindi. Our collaboration emerged through a
creative synergy between researchers, field partners, and Gram Vaani, a social
tech company that uses appropriate technology and communications to empower
communities and achieve development outcomes. We focus on social and
technological innovations to strengthen child immunization through empowering
communities and health workers.

From the start, our work has been inspired by the joys and challenges of the
field. Learning requires both heart and mind. Uncertainty sparks creativity. We
believe that impactful innovations are most likely to emerge from a process of
sustained interaction between cutting-edge technologies and scientific advances,
multi-disciplinary research, and perspectives informed by ground realities. We
are proud to learn collaboratively, to conduct excellent research, and to work
as a team to accelerate health innovation. Our bottom line is measured by our
impact on the people and communities we serve.

WHAT WE DO

Immunization is one of the most successful and cost-effective health
interventions and is estimated to prevent between 2 and 3 million deaths
annually worldwide. Immunization coverage in India has improved in recent years
but an estimated 1 in 7 children in India do not receive immunization. Reaching
these populations requires more effective immunization systems, and these in
turn require improved immunization data.

In India, vaccination records tend to be recorded manually on paper-based Mother
and Child Protection cards (MCP). Not only are these cards easily lost, their
paper-based nature makes the data compiling process extremely inefficient.
Currently, the MCP card immunization record is filled out by the vaccinators at
the point of service, but entry of immunization data occurs offline, at the
Primary Health Centre, with delays. New systems for data collection involving
tablet computers are planned, but manual data entry poses important challenges
for these health workers. Without timely and accurate data, vaccine delivery
suffers, leading to poorer coverage and follow-up of immunization.

TIKA VAANI – A NEW APPROACH

We have developed an application to help frontline workers equipped with a
mobile smartphone in their tasks. The approach will change immunization data
processes in four key ways:

WHERE WE WORK

We value equality, diversity and take pride in investing in local capacity – our
field team is an integral part of our work. We have been working in the same
location and have largely the same field team since 2012.

Our field work is conducted in a rural district of the state of Uttar Pradesh,
India. Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state with more than 200 million
inhabitants and especially poor health and development indicators. Hardoi
(population 4 million) is a poor performing area within Uttar Pradesh. The
Indian government views Uttar Pradesh and Hardoi as high-focus areas for health,
development, and immunization.

OUR VISION

We believe that Tika Vaani can contribute to better immunization coverage,
equity, and timeliness, and healthier futures for children. An early-stage
evaluation is currently underway.

Over the next five years, with the help of partners, we aim to see this solution
scaled up within India and in developing countries around the world.

OUR PARTNERS

We are extraordinarily grateful to the partners and supporters who share our
vision and help us to take it forward. You accompany and inspire every step of
our journey.
