THE MCLAREN PARK SUMMER STAGE A series of free summertime music events at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in San Francisco's McLaren Park. The Summer Stage Series will kick off in 2014. YOUTH SPEAKS IN THE PARK July 12th Committed to a critical, youth-centered pedagogy, Youth Speaks places young people in control of their intellectual and artistic development. We are urgently driven by the belief that literacy is a need, not a want, and that literacy comes in various forms. As we move more deeply into the 21st Century, oral poetry is helping to define the new American Voice. By making the connection between poetry, spoken word, youth development and civic engagement, Youth Speaks aims to deconstruct dominant narratives in hopes of achieving a more inclusive, and active, culture. Believing that young people have the tools to take control of their lives through language, Youth Speaks encourages youth to express themselves using their own vernacular. SummerStage is teaming up with the Youth Speaks organization to present an amazing day of youth in the arts...spoken word, performance, song, and dance....from San Francisco and Bay Area Youth. NOISE POP IN THE PARK July 19th. San Francisco's NOISEPOP has been giving the City its annual Noisepop Fest every Febuary for over 20 years and we are thrilled to include NoisePop as a partner in this years Summer Stage inaugural events. Stay tuned as we will be announcing 3 SF bands to the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. SUMMER STAGE SOUL REVIEW 2014 / JULY 26 The San Francisco based Jazz Mafia extended family of players have been serving up all kinds of different flavors of souls for years now. In addition to that, in recent years the City's dj scene has welcomed the arrival of the M.O.M dj crew (Motown on Mondays). Bring a blanket out and some dancing shows as these two pwerful musical forces welcome an array of local vocal and musical talent perform of classic soul cuts from the 60' and 70's with a healthy sampling of the classic Bay Area and San Francisco based soul projects. Jerry Day Aug 3rd Jerry Day is a civic and cultural event that celebrates one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time and San Francisco native son – Jerry Garcia. This event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia as we celebrate his legacy, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and recognize his Excelsior roots. By uniting the diverse communities of San Francisco through Jerry’s music, we are creating something extraordinary for Jerry’s childhood neighborhood – the Excelsior District, McLaren Park, and the City and County of San Francisco. DAY OF THE LIVING Aug 17th The sounds of Latin rhythms have been a part of the San Francisco music scene for decades especially in neighborhoods like The Mission and The Excelsior (Jerry Garcia's childhood neighborhood). Come out as pay homage to our Latino and Latina musical history and welcome a new generation of musicians. This edition of the MP Summer stage will be curated by our friends from La Bohemia Productions and Jaffe Presents. Doin’ it in the Park DIITP San Francisco Labor Day Tradition.
