@icy I think the idea could work, but it's somewhat crippled by mastodon
refusing to play nice, and also lemmy the same. I'm otherwise pretty happy with
azorius, it's just really quiet.

tedu honked 11 Aug 2024 20:28 -0400

But why would I want to read a note from an opsec chucklefuck who thinks SMS is
an appropriate means to send a secure link?

@icy kinda, but it hasn't really caught on after the big spike a year ago. I
still follow some groups, but in many ways it's like a worse reddit. very hard
to find interesting content.

I could feel my brain draining through the bottom of my skull just reading this.

Ugh, the cops in got ham are so dumb. Mr. Freeze is wearing a metal cryo suit,

@sjb indeed, classic macos used CR, and it's been quite a while, though still
common to see software that handles all three endings.

tedu honked 07 Aug 2024 19:12 -0400

Heh, this is funny. Apple finally retires the USB superdrive. But the Ars
writeup contains a lie.

> Plug an optical drive into a modern Mac—whether it's a SuperDrive or a
> third-party model—and you'll still be able to burn and rip audio CDs with the
> Music app, rip or burn CD and DVD image files with Finder or Disk Utility, or
> burn files to a disc for archiving with the Finder.

This is mostly true regarding third party models, but the superdrive uses only a
single USB port and requires the host computer to provide power in excess of the
spec. Apple's latest computers no longer do that, so it doesn't work.

Refer to the snazzy video from not that long ago.

tedu honked 07 Aug 2024 17:55 -0400

A note about using honk file storage. I followed an image bot which I wanted to
archive. A magic sql query later, I had a list of file names I could hard link
with ln. Eventually cleanup will delete (unlink) the originals in the attachment
directory, but the files still exist in my saved directory. This would have been
unpossible with the blob store. Stuff like that is the motivation for the
change.

#honk 1.4.0 pink peppercorn

The big change here is moving attachment storage to the filesystem. This
simplifies cleanup operations substantially. It's on by default, but honk will
mostly automatically fallback to the blobdb as needed. If you have a custom
backup script, you may need some changes, but otherwise should be pretty
transparent.

There's also TOTP and C2S because why not, but also, why?

 * Another tune up for thread sort.
 * Rework setup and admin screens.
 * Add some compat for forgefed activities.
 * TOTP for those who live dangerously.
 * Switch to storing attachments in the file system.
 * Some styling changes.
 * Experimental support for C2S activities.
 * Try harder to retrieve threads from the database.

Jamming in some last minute changes to honk so the release will be fresh and
exciting.
