BEST WAY TO APPROACH COLLEGE ESSAYS

Essays

In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. As
much as you wish to shine, the shine will be lost if your sentences and thoughts
do not string together logically. You must make sense to the reader. Reread your
essay as though you have no idea what the writer is talking about.

LOGGING OUT...

Does it make sense? Are there transitions between different sections of the
essay? Is the essay organized? Have you started at the beginning? Have you
provided an ending? Have you given enough background information? It is a good
idea to make sure different audiences understand what you have tried to write.
In other words, write about anything. Colleges want multi-dimensional students,
so show them something unique about yourself. Gist: The answer to this prompt
can range from competitive math to basketball to debate to a collection of
vintage Superman comics.

It can also be used for your personal statement as well. The point of this essay
is to demonstrate your passion, have a deep intellectual understanding of
something, and notice the details that Approach: Think about what your interests
are. What do you do in your free time? If you could spend a day doing something,
what would you do?

The Gist: This prompt will ask you why you want to spend the next four years of
your life at one particular college. Strategically, this essay accomplishes two
things: it shows your interest in the school which is important, because schools
want to maintain high matriculation rates , and it shows that you are a good fit
for the school. Approach: To approach this essay, think about how the admissions
officers will see you: a potential math major with an interest in Shakespeare, a
politics nerd with a photographic memory, an all-around artist with a knack for
biology, whatever.

THE RIGHT WAY TO WRITE ABOUT TRAGEDY IN COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAYS

In the second, yes, we know you like fishing but we also understand your
commitment to an activity you engaged in every day and recognize that your
fishing trips are a social effort. There is a sense of time and place- we can
see the setting, smell the herbs. With a few extra words, sentence two tells us
much more about your fishing experience.

Many students have a tendency to skew generic in the telling of their personal
stories. What makes an essay memorable is often the sum of the little things. If
you can paint a clear picture for your reader by providing details, you are much
more likely to lodge a marker in their memories. Ninety percent of the essays
that pass your desk are stone-cold boring, and maybe ten percent break through
the fuzz and force you to pay attention.

As an applicant, you want your essay to shine a bright light in the face of that
oft-bored reader. No matter what your subject, serious, uplifting, sentimental
or pithy, your essay should aim to entertain. This will require many elements
working together in harmony. You will need a compelling subject, a direct and
powerful narrative, impeccable grammar and a memorable style.

Students often ask if they should work on another draft or if their essay is
sufficiently polished. In closing, Todd Rinehart, vice chancellor for enrollment
at The University of Denver provides perspective, summarizing the intent of the
college essay:. Students should know that while essays are important, they are
rarely the reason a student gets admitted or denied. Students shouldn't feel the
pressure of having to write a Pulitzer-winning essay to gain admission to their
college of choice.

With that said, they also need to know that an award-winning piece won't
supersede poor academic performance. Most admission committees are looking for
capable and competitive students academically—once academic ability is vetted,
an essay plays an important role in helping committees build their class with
interesting classmates and roommates.

Committees aren't looking for the perfect essay, topic, or set of activities and
achievements—we simply want an interesting, authentic, and well-written glimpse
into a student's life. Perfection—in college admission and in life—is often
overvalued. Perfect should not be the goal in your essay. What will distinguish
your writing and your application is your unique voice.

Be willing to take risks, be vulnerable and share your truth. The readers will

yourself better as well. Especially tormented are the perfectionists, you
dutiful students who view the college essay as just one more roadblock to be
overcome with sheer will.

Advancing Physics Chapter 10 Revision

While this is not new, it has allowed the development of some new approaches to
assessment which also incorporate key skills. For example, Advancing Physics
students research into 'designer materials' and present an oral and written
report on their work, and Salters Horners students report on 'physics in use'
that they have observed during an out-of-school visit; both courses also include
practical investigative projects. Teaching Advancing Physics It seems a long
time ago and far away that the Teacher's CD-ROM arrived and my colleague and I
finally started to get to grips with the course.

I had attended a two-day INSET course and we had read the newsletters,
specification and exemplar material but this was it. Twenty-five students had
signed up for the course, which was double the number in the upper sixth. It is
fair to say that it has been a vertical learning curve at times. Preparation for
each lesson has brought back memories of that first year of teaching when each
A-level lesson took as long to prepare as it did to teach.

Having said that, it was a pleasure to be doing something so up to date with the
students—I used to cringe every year when we got to the reading in Unit J
Nuffield about this promising new storage device called a CD-ROM. In the autumn
term I had a heavy workload as I prepared to teach unfamiliar material on
digital imaging and signalling.

My colleague, on the other hand, is a metallurgist by training and relished the
two chapters he covered on materials. The imaging and signalling chapters came
with new to me software and I found that, as with anything to do with IT,
learning to use it expanded to fill the time allocated. However, I loved using
the imaging software and seeing the delight of the students when they saw its
power.

Cool Edit was great fun and made the idea of a signal having a frequency
spectrum so easy to communicate. It was a relief, however, to move on to sensing
and get back to something I was more familiar with, like circuits and internal
resistance. We had stuck almost exactly to the timings recommended in the
handbook, but because we have only four hours a week this had meant that the
first term was very, very rushed.

The first piece of coursework, a presentation on materials, took place during
three lessons in November. We have been incorporating an identical style of
individual presentations on designer materials for many years and it went fairly
well. The second piece of coursework was altogether different and we will not do
it this way next year! The students took part in team tasks about testing a
sensor in the week before Christmas. They then used the holiday to plan what
they would do and the week that they came back was allocated as Sensing Project
week when they would all do it.

We scheduled a lesson of preparation and three hours to do it. To say it was
hectic would be understatement. My technician was superb and reacted to the fact
that large amounts of equipment were tied up for the week with more calm than I
would have mustered in her place. Having said all this, I think that the
students learned more about circuits, potential dividers and the real meaning of
things like internal resistance, resolution and sensitivity in those short hours
than in several weeks of teaching.

By the end some were confidently setting up bridge circuits and trying out
amplifiers and it was really impressive to watch. The spring term got off to a
much more relaxed start and we are now preparing to adjust some of the practical
details to make things run more smoothly next year. At the start of the course
the excellent teacher e-mail group showed lots of messages about students being
nervous.

Like many teachers I think I had got a little carried away with the CD-ROM, and
had not realized that the experience we were giving the students in Advancing
Physics was so very different from what they had been used to, or were getting
in other subjects, that they were getting anxious. The students wanted 'proper'
notes. I realized that it was all right to teach in the way I had previously. I
now feel more confident: I now mix and match traditional teaching with extensive
use of the CD and learning activities provided in the course and it seems to
work fine. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The students' first words on arrival
in the first lesson were 'Where's my CD?

The novelty factor was great and my colleagues reported that students were
asking for CDs in the chemistry and biology classes! So what do they think of it
after six months, now that the novelty has worn off?

A brief questionnaire and informal discussions with them show that they really
like the course. Many enjoy the practical work—learning by doing, and thinking
for themselves. Inevitably, some are finding the course very tough. Some like
the maths, some don't. The CD is useful, the students have fun using it and
exploring its wealth of materials although there are a few criticisms: one
student pointed out that Sometimes finding an exercise or question can take
longer than actually doing it!

Would they recommend the course to students joining the sixth form this
September? About half gave conditional responses Only if you are prepared to
work hard and are interested in it. I would to those who are good at maths. You
need to be good with computers. But the rest recommend it unreservedly Yes, it
is a well-structured course, easy to follow. Yes, it is a fun and interactive
lesson that links to lots of other subjects.

Yes, because I think physics is interesting and explains a lot of things that
happen in the world. It is also very a very up-to-date course with good
resources compared with other subjects.

As for me, I think I would say the same: hard work but immensely enjoyable. The
best part is that in the majority of lessons the students can't help but show
that they enjoy it. The most widely used word is 'Wow! An outside observer's
view of Advancing Physics. The Advancing Physics AS package represents an
initiative by the Institute of Physics, with the support of the Institute of
Electrical Engineers and industry, examined by the Cambridge-based examination
board OCR as a completely new and up-to-date post physics course.

Specifically, the course is intended to be attractive, accessible and set in a
variety of contexts, and for this it is to be strongly commended. It intends to
exploit well-tried and tested strategies to keep the teacher and student
autonomous but also aims to catalyse debate, teamwork and presentations by
students. These approaches are sensitive to the demands of Key Skills: this
course provides many opportunities to collect evidence for portfolios to secure
OCR's key skills award or simply to develop the key skills themselves: the CD
can be searched to locate these possibilities.

Like virtually all of the new AS and A2 courses, assessment is modular: two
written papers and one coursework portfolio are required for an AS
qualification. The coursework includes an instrumentation task, a research and
presentation task regarding materials and a 'making sense of data' task.

EDEXCEL, AS PHYSICS, COURSEWORK. EDEXCEL HISTORY A LEVEL COURSEWORK MARK SCHEME

Exam questions range from those requiring single-word responses or short
calculations to structured questions in which students may be expected to apply
physics learned in one context to a new situation and questions assessing topics
that a student has chosen to study in depth. Three further assessments lead to
the A2, each containing a written exam. The first A2 module also assesses a
practical investigation, the second research and a report and the final
assessment is a synoptic examination.

A2 question papers have a similar format to AS ones with the synoptic paper
additionally containing a comprehension exercise. In keeping with the philosophy
for the post reorganization, the course designers' strategy was to engage the
learner during the AS phase then deepen understanding during A2, encouraging and
enabling students to continue with physics-related courses at university level.

The AS course is an induction into physics and some, especially the less able,
need to travel gently from the engaging, topical and reassuring to the unknown
or challenging. The ordering of topics meets this demand. Traditional
progression has been turned on its head: dynamics falls at the end of this AS
phase and it opens with image processing.

The course is up-to-date and attractive, but the most radical feature is the
volume of resources that are supplied. The course text is deliberately minimal,
but attractive, with the bulk of the information stored on the accompanying
CD-ROM, for which there are student and teacher versions. Course sponsors, the
Institute of Physics, have also organized extensive support and training for
teachers and technicians, and provided electronic networking for teachers and
students.

Exact numbers of centres and students are not yet known, but there are certainly
several thousand SHAP students currently in their AS year, located in schools
and colleges of all types throughout England and Wales.

Sue Tinline, who teaches at Neston High School, Cheshire, asked her students for
their views after they had sat the first external test in January. At this time,
they had studied three units, which use contexts of sport, space and music to
teach aspects of mechanics, d. They had also been on an out-of-school visit to
see physics in use, which they will report on as part of their coursework
assessment. These are some of their comments. I enjoyed the practicals with
