BUDGET A BIG PLAYER IN COMING ELECTIONS

BY: CHRIS FITZSIMON - FEBRUARY 7, 2006 5:12 AM

Politics expected to shape final bill By Marsha Mercer MEDIA GENERAL NEWS

WASHINGTON

Forget trying to comprehend $2.77 trillion.

If you want to understand the budget President Bush sent to Congress yesterday,
all you need are these numbers: Nov. 7, 2006.

That’s Election Day, when all 435 House seats, 33 seats in the Senate and 36
statehouses will be in voters’ hands.

Bush hopes to bolster his party’s chances of retaining control of Congress with
a stay-the-course budget, but his spending blueprint gives fodder to both
parties.

"We have set clear priorities that meet the most pressing needs of the American
people while dealing with the long-term challenges that lie ahead," Bush said in
his budget message.

priorities – the wrong ones.

Some Republicans were lukewarm about details in his plan. Sen. Elizabeth Dole,
R-N.C., said she was disappointed that several projects along the North Carolina
coast were left out. She vowed to work to get them added.

As Dole and others reminded their constituents, the budget is Bush’s wish list.
It’s not a done deal. Congress has to go along with his plans – and that’s what
makes it a dandy political document in an election year. (more…)
