The body of Robert Card, the 40-year-old suspect in the country’s deadliest mass
killing of the 2023, was found by authorities, Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D)
announced at a news conference late Friday night. Card was found with an
apparent self-inflicted wound, a law enforcement official told The Washington
Post.

HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW:

All 18 victims — 17 adults and one minor — have been identified, Sauschuck said
at the Friday evening news conference. One of the dead was 14, others were aged
34 through 76. The victims included a father and a ‘hero’ who tried to fight
back.
This summer, Card, a member of the Army Reserve, was sent to a hospital by his
military reserve commanders. He received about two weeks of inpatient
psychiatric treatment, according to a person familiar with investigators’
findings.
At a news conference Thursday evening, Lewiston native Rep. Jared Golden
(D-Maine) called for an assault weapons ban, a notable departure from his past
votes against gun-control legislation. “The time has now come for me to take
responsibility for this failure,” he said.
The shooting is the 34th mass killing with a gun in the United States this year.
