INTERVIEW WITH WORLD TRAVELER, SEASONAL WORKER, AND BLOGGER – TAYLOR SPINELLI

March 8, 2024 //  by fiymc

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I am originally from Philadelphia, though I love to find temporary homes in
cities around the world. Backpacking, seasonal work, and volunteer exchanges
allowed me to travel to 35 countries before I turned 24 years old.

I spent my youth feverishly watching travel youtube channels, reading every
travel blog under the sun and dreaming of the day I would finally have the
freedom to wander. My plan to study abroad in Thailand was

squandered by the pandemic and my travel dreams continued to grow by the day. In
2021, at the age of 21, I set out on my first backpacking trip and haven’t
looked back since. I have developed a true passion for immersive experiences and
seek them out wherever I am in the world. My dreams of exploration have yet to
die down, and I have big plans to continue to bounce all around the world.

WHAT IS YOUR WEBSITE ABOUT?

Taylstravels is my travel blog where I document my life on the road. I share my
successes and advice, but probably more importantly, my mistakes and what I
learned from them in an attempt to save others from making the same errors. I
write a lot about ways to travel on a small budget through work exchanges and
seasonal work. I really just want to help people realize that a life filled with
so much colorful travel and life experience is more attainable than they’ve been
led to believe.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRAVELS

While I certainly never fit the stereotype of the American without a passport, I
definitely wasn’t traipsing around the world from a young age. My family and I
traveled to several states and we took a few trips out of the country, always
sticking to North American and the Caribbean. It wasn’t until high school that
the travel bug really set in and I started itching to explore on my own and
venture further into the world.

Traveling became my main focus and I devoured hours of travel youtube videos for
inspiration. I visited Tanzania and Thailand with a high school travel group and
after those trips I was hooked. I saved every penny in the hopes to be able to
start really traveling one day.

Six years later, I’ve lived in three different cities around the world and have
had more “once in a lifetime” experiences than I could have ever dreamed of.
I’ve trained through Europe, bussed through Southeast Asia, and driven all over
New Zealand. I’ve become a scuba diver in Thailand, ridden in a hot air balloon
in Turkey, motorbiked through Vietnam, and skydived in New Zealand. It’s a life
that I am tremendously grateful for.

WHAT’S YOUR TRAVEL STYLE?

I’ve been to 35 countries now which feels like quite a few for someone as young
as I am (I hit country #35 at 23 years old). But, I actually don’t really care
for counting countries anymore.

As a young backpacker, I was in such a rush. I’d spend a few days in a place and
then rush on to the next. That lifestyle left me exhausted, burnt out, and with
frequent illnesses that slowed me down (my worst nightmare at the time). Now, I
prefer a slower travel lifestyle. In 2023, I traveled for the longest stint of
time and visited the fewest countries. I realized just how much I value true
immersion and exploring places that are a bit more off the beaten track. Slow
travel is something I aspire for moving forward. It’s more sustainable: both for
the planet and for my own physical, mental, and emotional well being.

HOW DO YOU EARN YOUR INCOME?

The way that I earn an income is constantly changing. I went to University near
home and I have a degree in Education. I support a lot of my travel lifestyle
through substitute teaching. It’s one of the best gigs for me because I can drop
everything and leave at any time. I never have to quit a job and it’s always
waiting for me to come back to. I’ve also been a nanny for 10 years and have
built a pretty solid network.

I sustain my long-term travel lifestyle by working while I’m gone as well. I
have been an Au Pair in Madrid, a server in New Zealand, a WWOOfer, and a
volunteer English teacher & housekeeper with Worldpackers. My favorite travel
job though is my summer gig as a mentor/travel guide for high school students.
I’ve done it in Thailand and will do it again in Costa Rica this year. I’m
willing to do all kinds of jobs to fund my travels, but I love to find
opportunities that are genuinely fulfilling and ones that align with my
passions: and I love working with youth in meaningful ways.

HOW DO YOU FIND WAYS TO TRAVEL ON A TIGHT BUDGET?

My budget is not quite as tight as it was a few years ago, but I’m still quite
frugal in a lot of ways. I am definitely no stranger to nights slept on airport
floors, cramped hostel rooms, and grocery store sandwiches. Looking for ways to
stretch my budget has become one of my favorite parts of travel. I’ve learned to
use credit card points to book free flights and have mastered the art of packing
light to save on bag costs. But, my favorite way to budget travel is through
work exchanges. Living on a farm in New Zealand as a WWOOFer and with a host
family in Spain were ways I was able to find free accommodation and food.

Then there’s Worldpackers which is one of my favorite ways to budget travel.
There are so many opportunities that can really enrich the travel experience
while helping to extend the budget. I stayed in rural Laos as an English teacher
with WP for a few weeks and had one of the best experiences living and working
with locals. There really are countless ways to save money while traveling and
I’m looking forward to testing out more ways like Couchsurfing and Trusted
Housesitters this year.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

I am definitely in the phase of life where I largely lack long-term plans. In
the summer, I’ll live in Costa Rica working as a mentor/teen travel guide again
where our focus will be learning about marine conservation and spending time
with sea turtles… so I’m super excited about that. The plan is to continue
seasonal work and volunteering to extend my travels as long as possible. Plus, I
have the blog to pour into and have big plans for that.

I’m just living each day as it comes and adding to my bucket list whenever
inspiration strikes. I think that’s one of the best (and scariest) parts of
being in my 20s right now: the flexibility and ability to do pretty much
anything. I want to live a million different lives, and I’m on my way to see
which ones stick and how I can absorb the most knowledge and wisdom along the
way.
