LABELS * beer (9515) * food (620) * liquor (4747) * wine (4099) WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2023 NEW STL BREWERS New Brewery! St. Louis, MO THE BREWERY This starts with the approach to recipe development taken by our Head Brewer, Chad Thompson. Contrary to beginning with a style guideline in mind, then moving forward – Chad starts with a flavor and experience in mind, then works backward. And since we’ve decided to not be bound by style guidelines, he’s free to use any ingredients and amount along with the his special techniques to create a new beer experience. To enable this philosophy and to enhance our creativity, we created a custom built brewhouse that allows us to make the beers we want to make. Iron Hops Brewing IPA...$9.99 / 4pk 16oz cans A bright citrus forward beer, featuring flavors of orange zest, lime, and tropical fruits. This beer was hopped with Citra, Warrior, and an experimental hop 1320. Great beer for a sunny day or bellied up to a bar with friends. These casks are the key components that create an unmistakable flavor profile. The native Brazilian wood commands a warmth and spice that shine through in every sip. Amburana wood adds aromas of baking spices, cinnamon and gingerbread. Hints of gingerbread and cinnamon meld together with other savory, herbal notes like clove and thyme to create a bourbon like no other. The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has perfumed strawberry and raspberry scents on the nose, a little predictable maybe after the scintillating Clos Saint-Jacques. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannin, quite masculine and structured, a slight coarseness to the tannin with a fresh finish that will require several years to unfurl. A bit of a curmudgeon at the moment although I am sure it will come good. The texture is light and fresh, but not lacking substance. This delightful wine is produced from the 0.36ha of Pinot planted in Monthélie in the lieux-dits Les Jouènes and Les Gamets. The fruit is all destemmed and cold soaked before fermentation in vat. Rated 92/100 Decanter Magazine 2017 Domaine Roulot Auxey Duresses 1er Cru Rouge...$159.99 "Roulot's only premier cru bottling of red grapes, the Auxey is perfect for those who enjoy an ethereal, mineral-driven style of Pinot Noir. The nose presents a harmonious medley of dark berries and spice, while the palate echoes the taut, crystalline character of the domaine's white wines. A chalky core underpins this red that will drink beautifully for at least the next decade." - Kermit Lynch, importer Posted by Paul Hayden at 8:13 PM No comments: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest Labels: wine 2020 COMTE DE VOGUE MUSIGNY VIEILLES VIGNES 2020 Comte de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes...$1,099.99 The mature vines in the domaine’s immense holding (5.56ha of old vines) have given us a wine with the youthful, plummy exuberance of Chambolle but with added precision and depth, revealing saline mineral notes, plus hints of flowers and spice. On the palate, the silky texture initially beguiles, and with time the firm structure and long finish become evident. Ageing in 35% new casks helps the wine retain an admirable purity of fruit. The medium-bodied flavors aren't necessarily finer than those of the Pucelles though they do possess more power and weight while retaining a beguilingly silky texture as well as excellent complexity on the strikingly long, balanced and Zen-like finale. The family's entrepreneurial spirit expanded into the whiskey bonding business back in 1887, whereby they matured their whiskey for many years beneath the cobbled streets of Dublin. The Red Spot name originated from the family's practice of marking casks of different ages with a spot of coloured paint. There was a Blue Spot, Green Spot, Yellow Spot, and of course Red Spot. As a colourful history would have it, this revered Red Spot has remained underground until now. This Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey has matured for over 15 years in a combination of American Bourbon casks, Spanish sherry butts and Sicilian Marsala wine casks, all contributing rich and complex flavours, making it the top spot in the range. Aged in demi-muids, there are only 800 bottles of this new cuvée, so I suppose this review is largely academic. That said, when Cinsault performs like this, it's certainly worthy of note, as it's often used for rosé or (in Châteauneuf, an appellation where rosé isn't permitted) dismissed as a minor blending variety. This wine is anything but minor. Floral and spicy on the nose, supremely silky on the palate, nearly endless on the finish, it delivers the goods, cushioned by perfumed, herbal, cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. It's not quite as expansive or generous as the Grenache-based Colombis, but it might be more concentrated and longer on the finish. I've been deliberately conservative with my drinking window, as it's delicious now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it showing well in a decade's time (assuming there's any left). Spice- and mineral-accented black and blue fruits, licorice, smoked meat and olive paste on the intensely perfumed nose. Concentrated blackberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors take on a suave floral nuance with aeration. Densely packed but lively as well, finishing with outstanding clarity, harmonious tannins and superb, blue-fruit-driven persistence. Rated 95/100 Vinous Media 2019 Allemand Cornas Reynard "R"....$339.99 The flagship 2019 Cornas Reynard comes from the older vines of the estate and is brought up in larger barrels. It's another incredible effort from this estate that certainly checks in near the top of the scale. Deep purple/plum-hued, with a monster bouquet of black cherries and plum fruits as well as hints of iron, sappy flowers, and bouquet garni, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a great finish. It shows the more structured, age-worthy style of the vintage, and the tannins clamp down firmly on the finish. While this will need a solid decade of bottle age, it's up there with some of the greatest Cornas ever produced. Rated 97+/100 Jeb Dunnuck Rated 98/100 Vinous Media 2019 Allemand Cornas Chaillot....$339.99 A quintessential Cornas that shows both the wild, feral character of the appellation as well as the elegance this estate always seems to achieve, the 2019 Cornas Chaillot offers a deep purple hue to go with a great nose of cassis and darker cherry fruits, violets, smoked game, and scorched earth. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has wonderful purity of fruit, building tannins, and a great finish. It's certainly more approachable than the Reynard yet still needs 4-5 years of bottle age. It's a beautiful Cornas that will have two decades of longevity. Rated 94/100 Jeb Dunnuck Rated 96/100 Vinous Media 2020 Allemand Cornas Chaillot "C"....$339.99 2020 Allemand Cornas Reynard "R"...$339.99 The best of Cornas - very limited, no reviews for the 2020s yet. Great vintage - The Wine Spectator scored the vintage has a whole 96/100 and Jeb Dunnuck scored it 97/100 (better than 2019) Posted by Paul Hayden at 6:53 AM No comments: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest Labels: wine TUESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2023 DOMAINE JAMET COTE ROTIE 2018 Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie....$199.99 I was able to taste numerous barrel samples of the 2018 Côte Rôtie, all rating between 95 and 99 points, which is a good sign! Most barrels were not destemmed and all the samples displayed inky colors, beautiful purity of fruit, classic Jamet style and complexity, and building tannins. Is this a remake of 1999? It has more upfront charm than the Côte Brune, but as with all great vintages of Jamet, 5-7 years of bottle age are rewarded. Rated 95-97/100 Jeb Dunnuck Jean-Paul Jamet said '2019 gave wines in the style that I like to make'. A step up from the 2018 vintage, the 2019 is more vibrant and intense. A blend of 25 parcels, amounting to 17ha, almost exclusively on schist soils. No destemming. A tasting of nine different barrels across a variety of lieux-dits suggest that the 2019 Côte-Rôtie is very special indeed. This is vibrant and intense, but not as sunny as the 2018 in style - sugars and phenolics progressed at the same gradual rate in 2019, making for a more harmonious and balanced wine. You feel the hot vintage in the wine, but it's represented more as power and intensity than hot alcohol. Vivid and highly impressive. Rated 98/100 Decanter Magazine 2020 Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie....$199.99 A combination of separate lieux-dits which show a classic, fresh and focused vintage, with each component reflecting its origins with great clarity. It's an aromatic style, with slight tannins and fairly low but balanced acidity. All whole-bunch fermented, matured mostly in old demi-muids. Rated 97/100 Decanter The 2020 Côte Rôtie should be brilliant, and I was able to taste multiple barrels. This vintage was not destemmed and Jean-Paul isn’t dogmatic with stems, judging each vintage on its own and adjusting the amount of stems accordingly. The 2020 shows a ripe yet pure style across the board, with most samples being medium to full-bodied and showing plenty of oomph and structure. The stems stand out in a few of the samples, and the wines reminded me slightly of 2010. This is a powerful, structured vintage at Jamet, and readers will love to have these their cellars. We do not get a lot of these each year! Grab some while they are here!!! 2020 Levet Cote Rotie...$94.99 Moving to the 2020s, which were still in barrel, the estate commented that this was an early vintage, and the wines are slightly less concentrated due to well-timed rains. The 2020 Côte Rôtie Amethyste showed beautifully, with an exuberant, perfumed bouquet of violets, cracked pepper, spring flowers, and raspberries. This medium-bodied, elegant, incredibly satisfying Côte Rôtie would be a great introduction for readers looking to understand the style of this terrific estate. Rated 92-94/100 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 Levet Cote Rotie La Chavaroche...$112.99 Labeled La Peroline in markets outside the United States, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Chavaroche (a barrel sample, from the lieu-dit of the same name) is another terrific wine from this tiny estate. It's a bit more complex and herbal-stemmy than the other bottlings, but it's also floral and tea-scented, with baskets of purple raspberries on the nose as well. Medium to full-bodied, it's the silkiest, most complete of the three cuvées at this address, while still boasting ample concentration and length and plenty of ripe tannins. Give it at least another 5 years in a cool cellar. Rated 95-97/100 The Wine Advocate Rated 98/100 Vinous Media 2020 Levet Cote Rotie Les Journaries...$99.99 Again a prospective sample blended from several barrels, the 2020 Cote Rotie Les Journaries (labeled Maestria outside the United States) is a blend of fruit from La Landonne and Côte Brune. It's full-bodied, rich and tannic, even chewy, with plenty of concentration, yet it's also fresh and fruit-driven, with vibrant notes of purple raspberries and exotic spices. This should be terrific; it just needs a good 5+ years.
