With the new decade beginning in 2020 and the massive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are seeing disruption in everyone’s work lives more than ever before, and its impact has hastened various workplace culture trends. This has exposed existing problems and has further accelerated a change towards the ‘future of work’. Furthermore, the emphasis on improving employability has increased across the board over the last half-decade, whether at the education or the enterprise level. The New Education Policy was framed to ensure a return on education which is measured by job readiness. In fact, even edtech firms have launched many career-oriented programs to help workers improve their skills in order to remain employable and relevant in the ever-dynamic volatile world of work. Improving one’s employability is a continuous process. To remain relevant in the current job market, one must invest in upskilling and upgrading. Aligning with this, here are some of the top employability trends that will dominate in 2023: * Implementation of new education policy and launch of India’s first digital university will be game changers in the current education system that is focused on embedding employability in education and making it accessible for widespread adoption. Skills and education will become inextricable linked, which is the need of the hour. Moreover, the two initiatives lay a solid foundation for scalability. * Adoption of Degree Apprenticeships will be a continuation of the New Education Policy which will encourage massive industry-academia partnerships. Linkage of apprenticeship with higher education will lead to overcome skill deficit in the labour market and youth employability enhancement by “learning by doing”, “Earning while Learning”, “Learning with Modularity”, “Learning with Flexibility” and “Learning with Social Signalling Value”. The adoption started in 2022, but the trend is expected to have fast-paced growth in 2023 due to visible green shoots. * Upskilling and reskilling is the mantra which began with the IT sector to address the skill shortage and talent cost is now being replicated in other sectors such as retail, BFSI, manufacturing (Auto & electronics), Energy & Power, among others. That is the fastest and most economical way to address the skill shortage. Despite being mastered by the IT sector, which continues to reskill its employees to upgrade its talent, others are expected to follow suit. Employers are also looking at this as an investment in talent retention by sponsoring and subsidising these high end education programs. * Organisations are becoming more environmentally friendly and are conscious of how their actions impact the climate. As a result, newer environmentally sustainable and friendly technologies are being implemented to reduce carbon emissions and resource consumption. This calls for a massive shift in the jobs and skills required to do these jobs. The world is shifting to green technologies, and there is a 38.5% increase in green talent from 9.6% in 2015 to 13.3% in 2021. The demand for green talent outpaces the availability of skills. As the demand for green talent grows, the need for skilling for green jobs becomes even more important. To create green talent, skilling must be complemented by upskilling and reskilling to align with the transition of economic activities towards environmental suitability. Some of the top green skills are required in the corporate services, manufacturing, energy, mining, designing and construction sectors. * Metaverse is taking digital skills to the next level, resulting in a shortage of quality gaming professionals. The skillsets revolve around modelling, designing and animation which needs the following skills: AR/ VR, 3D Modelling & Designing, NFT, UX/UI design, and Cybersecurity. As the gaming job market is expected to grow by 9.3% by 2026, organisations are investing in upskilling and reskilling of the existing workforce to update talent and meet skill demand. A significant amount of economies, industries, and work cultures have been disrupted on a major scale over the past two years. Resilience—operational, financial, and reputational—holds the secret to survival. The better prepared a company is to handle any uncertainties and upheavals, the more resilient it is. Nowadays, employers are placing more emphasis on the expansion and development of each employee. Instead of having a mindset to do the same task, regardless of interest or skill set, they are offering employees the freedom and flexibility to perform what suits their skills and requirements. Not only is this new trend encouraging for workers, but also for companies and ultimately the economy.
