AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MONITORING PROGRAMME

During the last century, populations of amphibian and reptile species have
declined significantly in many areas of the world. The National Amphibian and
Reptile Monitoring Programme is ARC’s flagship portfolio of surveys and projects
that, together, generate data to inform the conservation of amphibians and
reptiles at a range of scales. Our species surveillance framework aims to
deliver robust, comprehensive information on the status of amphibians and
reptiles throughout the UK, to safeguard their populations and the habitats on
which they depend. The programme is dynamic and collaborative. Some surveys have
been running for more than 25 years, other initiatives are coordinated by
shorter, fixed-term projects. Explore these pages for information on current
initiatives, how to take part, results and updates.

HOW DOES MONITORING MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

A good understanding of how amphibians and reptiles are faring is key to
planning and prioritising the actions needed to protect their long-term future.
The programme is designed to generate data that is suitable for use in species
status assessments to guide policy and, at the same time, be relevant to land
managers, and informative to anybody who wants to know more about frogs, toads,
newts, snakes or lizards in the UK.

WHY BECOME A SURVEYOR?

The National Amphibian and Reptile Monitoring Programme provides the chance to
discover and experience wild amphibians and reptiles at first-hand, gaining a
personal insight into the wildlife found in your local area. Taking part in a
reptile or amphibian survey is fun and rewarding. It is an opportunity to
develop or practice your skills and be part of a bigger community of volunteer,
land-manager and professional surveyors, ecologists and conservationists, who
are working towards a better future for species that are sometimes overlooked.

WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?

Anyone is welcome to take part. Some surveys are suitable for beginners, or
people with little time – there is even a survey that can be done from home.
Others require a higher level of skill, experience, and a greater time
commitment. Those surveys targeting protected species (e.g. great crested newt,
natterjack toad, smooth snake, sand lizard) can only be undertaken by surveyors
who have an appropriate licence.
The programme is supported by ARC’s training team. In addition to online
training resources, some projects run regular in-person training sessions on
essential skills and knowledge, or group activities to help new surveyors
practice alongside others while they gain the confidence to survey
independently.

in the area you look after, why not offer to host a survey? If you already
record amphibians or reptiles and would like to know how your data could make a
bigger impact as part of a national programme, contact us to explore
cooperation. Email survey-coordinator@arc-trust.org.
