COMMUNITY AND ACTIVISM: ART AS A CATALYST FOR CHANGE – PEER REVIEW

The project I analyzed is called  Community and Activism: Art as a Catalyst for
Change by Brianna Pedraza.  The project itself seems to be about art and
activism, a historical recollection of art performances in the past. I really
like the way the archives are organized and put into different categories, this
make the project complete and rich in media content. It is completely excited
how the use of multiple media has helped this project to enrich its essence with
the relation between each collection and exhibitions. I would have appreciated
something more modern in terms of the design (which is not the most exciting
part on this project), but it is true that it uses all the web accessibility
check marks, everything is visible, the contrast is legible and easy to
interpret.

I believe this project is more about a particular part of the history of art in
LA . It interacts with problematics related to ethnicity or race in society so
this is a great project to check specially if you are interested in learning
about history art in Chicano/LA communities. I believe this collection can be
utilized by scholars in the area of art that are interested in specifict social
intersections .

The only problem I encountered in this webpage is the lack of usability,
specifically in their dynamic of movement going forward or back to different
pages.  Also, I noticed that the principal page “home” is only available if you
click the link provided, after that there is not way to come back to the “main”
page. I think this limits other public in access to the whole content of the
project missing the initial interface.

APPLE KEYBOARD – PEER REVIEW

The archive project I analyzed is Apple Keyboard by Ken Gao. My first
impressions about this project in particular is the design as it is basic but
easy to use. There is not a complicated design but the selection of archives
theme, Apple, gave the author a great use of this design.

The content is informative and not overwhelmed since it goes straight forward to
present apple’s items and information; however, I see a lot of disorganization
that makes the visitor a little bit confused for its use.  It is also a little
bit hard to understand the content this archive is aiming to.  I can see on the
Home page a list of content the archive project has however, there is not a sub
page or collection that labels the content,

In my experience using it, I see effective usability since there is not a bunch
of random pages but one specifict that contains the whole information easily. 
Even though the project provides important archives and its purpouse is
reached,  I see the webpage basic and its use of technology is not its main
target, there is no external links, variety of media, and it’s a simple one page
project.

EVALUATION PLAN – REGUETON MEXA ARCHIVE

My project is called Reggaetón Mexa referring to a specific music genre from
Mexico. As this is a new type of reggaeton that is reaching a great popularity,
there are not an archive project that has archived information about its success
in the music industry.

As a proud edgy archive Mexican, I have the responsibility of preserving this
type of music that is marking its identity among society.

 

In this project I will be focusing in collecting, organizing, and archiving
information and digital media related to the phenomenon of Reggaeton Mexa. The
project is aimed to educate the population with previous, current, and future
information about this new adaptation. I will build my webpage in Omeka to have
the flexibly of providing as much accessibility as possible because I want to
structure the content in a way that there is ,an about page, historical context,
and musicians. In which they will include interviews, social media posts, music
videos, and of course images, videos, and visual designs.

 

In terms of web accessibility and metadata, I want to me cautions about the
media I collected so I am implementing a correct use of metadata in every media
file that I collect from other webpages or projects (if exist). I also will
check my visuals, design, font color and size to provide accessibility to all
the users interested in my project.

 

 

Crowdsourcing and Public Engagement:

The impact of the reggaeton Mexa will become an influential rhythm in the
history of Latin American music. With this project people will not only interact
with building more data, but they will create a sense of community with other
reggaeton Mexa enthusiast.

 

Impact on Accessibility and Research:

As this is a popular music genre that will have an historical context on
history, this project will help scholars and the public in general to gather and
export media files easier and faster.

WHAT IS ARCHIVE?

The J Paul Getty Museum’s digital collection [Link: J. Paul Getty Museum |
Getty] is a comprehensive repository of high-resolution images of artworks,
spanning various periods and styles. The primary goal of the Getty archival
project is to promote education and scholarly research. The collection includes
detailed descriptions, historical contexts, and high-quality images that can be
used freely under certain conditions. While many images are in the public
domain, they cannot be used for commercial purposes.

I chose this collection because I have seen or attended exhibitions at this
museum and appreciate that they have archived both physical and virtual assets,
providing accessibility to those who cannot attend these exhibitions in person.
Users can search for specific artworks or browse through different categories.
The high-resolution images are available for download, which is particularly
beneficial for educators, researchers, and students. This archive project is
well-organized, combining the aesthetics of a museum with the user-friendly
interface of a well-thought-out design.

The article “Theories of the Archive from Across the Disciplines” by Marlene
Manoff mentions the importance of understanding archives not just as
repositories of information but as dynamic entities that shape and are shaped by
social, cultural, and political contexts. These aspects are evident in the Getty
archive project, which showcases digital assets from different parts of the
world, cultures, and languages, primarily for educational purposes. The project
provides information from past events and makes their digital assets available
for public use, as most of their content is in the public domain.

In my opinion, this is an excellent example of how archive projects should be.
It addresses digital content that can answer ethical, social, and academic
issues. Investing in a skilled team of archivists reflects the evolving role of
archivists in society since the beginning of the internet era, not only by
creating a user-friendly interface but also by protecting the terms and use of
each piece of art or asset stored online.
