Hal ini dilakukan karena tingkat kebutuhan yang mendesak akan Sarjana Teknik Mesin secara Regional dan Nasional. Pada bulan Juli 1962, melalui Sekretaris Fakultas (Prof. A. T. Barus, M.Sc.), Pimpinan Fakultas Teknik menerbitkan surat keputusan dan sekaligus membentuk sebuah Tim Persiapan Pembukaan Jurusan Mesin pada Fakultas Teknik USU. Hingga pada tahun 1970, program studi Teknik Mesin pertama kali meluluskan sarjana bergelar Insinyur dengan alumni pertama bernama Muhammad Nur Abdullah. VISI DAN MISI VISI Menjadi program studi Teknik Mesin berdaya saing internasional yang memiliki keunggulan akademik berciri kekayaan lokal MISI 1. Menciptakan iklim akademik yang kondusif dalam mencapai proses belajar-mengajar, penelitian, dan pengabdian masyarakat. 2. Menyediakan program pendidikan tinggi Teknik Mesin dengan kurikulum berbasis Kerangka Kualifikasi Nasional Indonesia (KKNI) untuk menghasilkan lulusan yang unggul serta mampu menjawab tuntutan pasar kerja, nasional dan internasional dan atau mampu melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. 3. Memacu dan membudayakan aktivitas penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat melalui kompetensi pemenuhan dana hibah pada level daerah, nasional, serta internasional. 4. Menumbuhkembangkan keunggulan akademik berdaya saing internasional yang berciri kekayaan lokal dengan bersinergi dengan pemerintahan, industri dan alumni CAPAIAN PEMBELAJARAN 1. Mampu menerapkan matematika, sains, material dan prinsip rekayasa (engineering principles) yang mencakup pengetahuan desain, produksi, operasi, dan pemeliharaan untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan teknik mesin. 2. Mampu mendeskripsikan rancangan sesuai dengan ketentuan/standarisasi (ISO, SNI, dll.); dan merancang buku manual pengoperasian dan perawatan. 3. Mampu merancang dan merekayasa kontruksi mesin dengan menerapkan teori dan prinsip rekayasa mekanik dengan benar. Serta merancang Prosedur Standard operasi Mesin dan Merancang Perawatan mesin-mesin produksi; 4. Mampu merancang suatu proses kerekayasaan dengan menerapkan prinsip perancangan sistem mekanik dari berbagai aplikasi Industri dengan memperhatikan unsur keselamatan, kehandalan, kemudahan serta faktor faktor ekonomi, sosiokultur dan lingkungan. 5. Mampu merencanakan dan mendesain proses pengukuran yang presisi dan akurat dalam menyelesaikan masalah keteknikan secara bertanggung jawab dan beretika. 6. Mampu memilih sumberdaya dan memanfaatkan perangkat perancangan-dan-analisis berbasis TIK dan komputasi untuk melakukan aktivitas rekayasa teknik mesin. 7. Mampu memberikan solusi masalah dalam lintas bidang keteknikan dengan memperhatikan faktor-faktor ekonomi, kesehatan dan keselamatan publik, etika dan lingkungan. 8. Mampu menulis proposal untuk penawaran dan laporan Proyek berkaitan Menguasai rekayasa permesinan, berkomunikasi, negosiasi dan presentasi berkaitan bidang teknik mesin; sesuai bidang konsentrasi. 9. Mampu melakukan identifikasi, formulasi dan analisis masalah rekayasa sesuai dengan bidang keilmuan teknik mesin melalui penelitian. 10. Mampu menerapkan kerekayasaan teknik mesin dan melakukan penelitian dibawah bimbingan dengan memakai kaedah-kaedah ilmiah dan menghasilkan karya ilmiah, melibatkan proses pembelajaran sepanjang hayat terhadap pengetahuan kekinian yang relevan.
