COMMUNITY KEEP PARKWAY A DESTINATION FOR FAMILIES, TEACHERS, STAFF, & ADMINISTRATORS. MATT'S EXPERIENCE Matt Schindler assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer at Seed St. Louis (formerly Gateway Greening) in the fall of 2015. Seed St. Louis is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities to grow food by providing education, resources, and a network. The organization's initiatives include community gardens, school gardens, urban orchards, urban farms, and support for backyard gardeners. In addition to his role at Seed St. Louis, Matt Schindler has been an active member of the community. He was elected as a board member of the Parkway School District in 2018 and is currently serving his second term in this capacity. Before his involvement with Seed St. Louis, Matt spent eight years contributing to community development at Downtown STL, Inc. (formerly the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis). Prior to his work in downtown St. Louis, he dedicated seven years to business development at the International Institute of St. Louis. Matt also has international experience, having spent two years as a business volunteer in the US Peace Corps in Armenia. Matt Schindler holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and German, as well as a master's degree in International Relations. His two daughters, have had all of their schooling in Parkway. His oldest graduated in 2020 (a future teacher, about to graduate college) and youngest will graduate this May from Parkway South High. The Schindler family moved into Parkway in 2005, so we have been Parkway residents for 18 years. WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR THE PARKWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION? I am seeking one last term on the Parkway School Board. After the challenges posed by the COVID-19 epidemic, I am reinvigorated and dedicated to advancing initiatives that enhance the educational experience for all Parkway students. WHAT POLICIES, POSITIONS, OR INITIATIVES WOULD YOU PRIORITIZE TO SUPPORT & INSPIRE STUDENTS IF ELECTED TO THE BOARD? 1) Students - Support personalized learning and our choice programs.2) Stability - Maintain the financial health of the district and advocate for public school funding.3) Community - Keep Parkway a destination for families, teachers, staff, and administrators. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE DISTRICT? * STRENGTHS Staff - Parkway boasts an exceptional staff, ranging from dedicated teachers to school personnel and administrators. * Financial - Over the past decade, Parkway's financials have significantly improved, providing enhanced stability. This financial strength enables the district to secure debt at lower interest rates and earn higher interest on reserves. * Destination - Recognized as a destination district, Parkway attracts both families and staff, offering a competitive edge in addressing staffing challenges compared to other districts. * * WEAKNESSES * Mental Health - Addressing the mental health needs of students remains an ongoing priority for Parkway, necessitating continued efforts and initiatives. * Underachieving Students - A persistent challenge is working with underachieving students, often linked to mental health. Parkway needs to remain committed to elevating these students to grade level and beyond through targeted interventions. * Staff Shortages - Parkway faces staffing shortages across all areas, placing added strain on existing staff. To mitigate this, the district must actively explore diverse avenues to attract new talent and address staffing issues. * WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF THE PURPOSE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION? Public education forms the bedrock of our civilized and educated society, uniquely serving all students regardless of their needs. I believe there's a need to reshape the image of public schools, emphasizing the crucial role they play in our society. WHAT IS YOUR MISSION & YOUR LONG TERM GOALS FOR THE PARKWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT AS A BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBER? My mission is to sustain the collaborative approach of the Parkway School Board. As one of seven board members, our collective effort is essential in addressing various issues. I take pride in the effective collaboration of our current board, even when faced with challenges. I firmly believe that a respectful board establishes a crucial tone for the entire district. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES FACING PARKWAY TODAY? WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THIS? The mental health of our students is the biggest challenge today. Both teachers and school personnel are required to confront these growing issues. I have seen these challenges in my own family. I do feel Parkway is a leader in the region in addressing the mental health issue, but much more needs to be done. For a student to learn, they must come into the classroom in a place mentally ready to learn. WHAT DO YOU THINK SCHOOLS SHOULD DO TO PREPARE STUDENTS TO BE BETTER MEMBERS OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY? To equip our students for the global community, it is essential to expose them to a diversity of people, thoughts, issues, and experiences. The world is inherently diverse, and the more exposure students have to this richness, the better prepared they will be for the challenges and opportunities they encounter beyond high school. HOW SHOULD SCHOOL DISTRICTS RESPOND TO BIG EVENTS IN THE BROADER WORLD? Schools play a crucial role in addressing current events by engaging students in discussions that enhance their understanding of the issues and their historical context. To adequately prepare students for the future, it is essential that they grasp the challenges they may encounter and, ideally, become contributors to the solutions. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH AS A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER IN INCORPORATING A DIVERSE RANGE OF IDEAS, INCLUDING YOUR OWN, ALONGSIDE THE EXTENSIVE WISDOM AND EXPERIENCE OF DISTRICT EDUCATORS, AND READILY AVAILABLE DATA TO INFORM DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES?
