Luke Berger is a native of Dillon, Montana and has been the Fifth Judicial District Court Judge since February of 2017. Judge Berger is a graduate of Carroll College and the University of Montana School of Law. Prior to taking the bench he clerked for the Montana Supreme Court, and was a prosecutor for the City of Helena and the Lewis and Clark County Attorney’s Office. Judge Berger and his wife Alexis Sandru have three small children and live in the heart of the Fifth Judicial District near Silver Star, Montana. Sydney Best graduated with High Honors from the University of Montana's law school in 2019. During school, she served as Articles Editor on the Montana Law Review and worked as the teaching assistant for Evidence classes. Sydney was a clinical student in United States Magistrate Judge Jeremiah Lynch’s chambers and served as an intern for Montana District Court Judge Amy Eddy on the Montana Asbestos Claims Court. After law school, Sydney clerked for two years for United States District Court Judge Dana L. Christensen. Sydney grew up on a small ranch south of Great Falls. She graduated from CMR High School before attending Willamette University, where she majored in International Studies and Spanish and graduated cum laude. Joseph P. Cook practices in Billings as a partner at the law firm of Heenan & Cook. After serving one year as a law clerk with the Federal District Court in Montana, Joe's law career has been exclusively dedicated to plaintiff’s litigation. Some of his recent successes include substantial jury verdicts in Shuman v. Highmark Traffic Services and Espy v. LaGreca – with each case resulting in general damage awards in excess of a million dollars. He earned MTLA’s 2021 Trial Lawyer of The Year award. The Hon. Ray J. Dayton is a 1978 High Honors graduate of Montana State University and a 1982 Honors graduate from the University of Montana Law School. He commenced his legal carrier as a Law Clerk to the Hon. W. D. Murray in the U.S. District Court, District of Montana. He engaged in the general practice of law from 1984 through 2006, emphasizing personal injury litigation. Judge Dayton was elected to the bench and commenced his judicial service on January 2, 2007. He was retained by the voters in 2012 and 2018. Judge Dayton was a member of the Sentence Review Division of the Montana Supreme Court from 2010 through 2012. Patrick T. Fox is a partner at Hunt & Fox, PLLP and President-Elect of MTLA. From 2007 through 2018, he was a partner at Doubek, Pyfer & Storrar. Pat earned his JD/MBA from the University of Montana in 2005 and started his legal practice in Helena at that time. Pat was awarded the MTLA's Appellate Advocacy Award in 2018. In 2019, Pat worked with Al Smith with the MTLA's legislative efforts during the 2019 session. Pat is the chair of the MTLA's Membership Committee. His practice focuses on plaintiff work in personal injury, medical negligence, product liability, and insurance. Pat is also active in pro bono work through Montana Legal Services Association. David R. Paoli was a member of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System during law school. After graduating with honors in 1986 from the University of Montana School of Law, he was a law clerk to Judge Jack D. Shanstrom, United States District Court, District of Montana. While working for Judge Shanstrom, he served on the Montana Human Rights Commission. After practicing personal injury law in Billings for three years, David opened his own plaintiffs’ civil litigation practice in 1992. He moved his offices to Missoula in 1993. He has represented individuals and small businesses from across the state of Montana and the West in cases involving wrongful death, FELA, personal injuries, insurance bad faith, products liability, medical negligence, and bank bad faith. David was elected to the Montana Trial Lawyers Association (MTLA) Board of Directors in 1990 and served as MTLA president in 1999-2000. He served on the ATLA (now AAJ) Board of Governors from 1995-1997. He was the 1992 Recipient of the MTLA Public Service Award. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America. In 2011 the Montana Trial Lawyers Association recognized him as Trial Lawyer of the Year. David has previously served as Chairman of the United States Magistrate Judge Selection Committee and as a Lawyer Representative to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ben Snipes is a shareholder with Odegaard Kovacich Snipes working out of their Great Falls office. His practice exclusively involves plaintiff’s cases, emphasizing toxic tort, workplace injuries and medical malpractice claims. Mr. Snipes is AV-Preeminent rated and recognized as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers. In 2019, Mr. Snipes along with his partner, Mark Kovacich, was named MTLA Trial Lawyer of the Year. In 2021, Mr. Snipes along with his partner, Ross Johnson, acquired a $65 million verdict on behalf of 25 Montana farmers. This is the 2nd highest verdict in Montana state court history. Mr. Snipes serves on the board of directors for the Federal Bar Association’s Montana Chapter, the Cascade County Bar Association (Past President) and the Cascade County Law Clinic (Past President).
