HELENA

Helena, known as the “Queen City of the Rockies,” is Montana’s capital city and
is centrally located in western Montana. The impressive Montana Capitol Building
houses the Governor’s Office and both Houses of the Legislature, which meets for
90 days in odd-numbered years. As the Capital, state government is a significant
employer. Given its stable economy, businesses of all types call it home.

The area has a rich history. Native Americans have lived in the area for
thousands of years. The Lewis and Clark Expedition travelled through in 1805 and
1806. Founded in 1864 when four prospectors from Georgia struck gold. In its
early years, the city was a mining town, with more than $3.6 billion in gold
(today’s dollars) being mined before the turn of the century.

With a county population of more than 60,000, Helena has a cosmopolitan feel in
a beautiful setting. The city is surrounded by forested mountains and lakes of
all sizes. No matter the season, Helena has endless outdoor opportunities,
including hiking Mount Helena, a 620 acre city park which rises to more than
5,400 feet at its peak and overlooks the city. From the symphony to rodeo,
museums to festivals, the arts and theater to sporting events, there is
something for everyone in Helena.
