OLDEST KNOWN LIVING THING * about * programs * faqs * visit * contact * * participate PreviousNext PreviousNext about the Oldest Known Living Thing. The Oldest Known Living Thing was established as an archive of the commons to maintain the valuable materials and written correspondence relating to a natural landmark and to study how this information influences the enunciative practices of individuals inside the public sphere. The archive has been organized to not simply picture the oldest thing, but to provide a social platform where together we expand the possibilities of picture-making. We welcome you to participate with us and to ask the question: “what is a photograph capable of?” The archive will support your participation by opening a space for dialogue, by balancing an emphasis on collecting with programs that promote production, and by preserving the materials you provide to the platform. It is our belief that these diverse modes of production, ones that develop collaboratively between our participants and the oldest thing, present the capacity of a photograph in unexpected and extraordinary ways. Your participation is important and will help create the shape and scope of the archive along with many others. In return, the materials that you provide will be presented in forthcoming chapters so we may better understand the sociopolitical and philosophical implications associated with a landscape owned and depicted collectively by the public. For now, we encourage you to learn more about what it is, and where it is, so you too can someday visit the oldest known living thing. 2833 BC YEAR ONE 2833 BC - Surpassing the age of the Great Pyramid of Giza, our subject began growing long ago in what would eventually become Inyo County, California. [images at top: core-drilling holes on the surface of the bristlecone pine trees in the Methuselah Grove.] Picture-making is often about communicating one's ideas or direct experience, but when performed collaboratively, our pictures create a visual structure that represents our social and political reality. * * * * * * * PreviousNext the Oldest Known Living Thing and our programs.
