The optimism, the surroundings, the stirring music, the Seamus Heaney poem, the sense of promise. On that “Day of Welcomes” on May 1, 2004, the taoiseach Bertie Ahern — at that time also president of the European Council — welcomed ten new nations into the European Union, pledging an era of peace and prosperity. Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney had been commissioned by the government to write a poem, Beacons at Bealtaine, for the ceremony. Two of the lines ran: “So on a day when newcomers appear/ Let it be a homecoming and let us speak.” Today if feels as if we are not just two decades away from that moment, but aeons.
