Browse Courses NEWS AND EVENTS WHAT’S ON LATEST NEWS KRIS FADE LAUNCHES MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY DUBAI'S MDXPLORER ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS Monday, 9 October 2023 RECENT NEWS Read More TOURISM & GREEN INVESTMENTS IN THE UAE: UNWTO WORLD TOURISM DAY 2023 Wednesday, 27 September 2023 By Professor Cody Morris ParisToday is UNWTO’s World Tourism Day 2023. With a theme of Tourism & Green Investments, this year’s World Tourism Day is a call to action for the international community, multilateral financial institutions, development partners and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy that better-targets investments for people, for planet, and for prosperity.Tourism is an energy-intensive sector, and the growth and development of the tourism sector requires major investments into other energy-intensive sectors, including transportation, infrastructure, and real estate, all of which contribute to the CO2 emissions. While the scientific evidence is conclusive about the detrimental effects of CO2 on the global climate and ecosystems, it is also widely recognised that CO2 emissions will continue to be an inevitable cost of economic development until there are suitable and scalable investments in alternative sources of energy.Sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions are central to the national development strategies in the UAE, and the rapid growth of the tourism sector has and will continue to pose environmental challenges. Recently, my colleague Professor Sudipa Majumdar and I, published the study Environmental Impact of Urbanization, Bank Credits, and Energy Use in the UAE—A Tourism-Induced EKC Model. Our study was the first in the UAE to investigate the interaction between tourism development and carbon emissions using a Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework. We employed a tourism-induced EKC model for the UAE from 1984 to 2019, and applied an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to determine the marginal impact of tourist arrivals and related variables, namely, bank credits to the private sector, urbanisation, and energy use, on CO2 emissions. As expected, our results confirmed a long-term positive relationship between tourism development, carbon emissions, per capita GDP, and financial development in the UAE. The findings suggest that there are opportunities in the financial sector of the UAE to continue to boost green investments and provide opportunities to implement clean energy-related technologies. Our findings also indicated that in the long-run urbanisation and energy use have resulted in declines in carbon emission levels, indicating positive outcomes for investments of the UAE government to diversify the energy sector with more alternative and renewable sources. Green urbanisation efforts adopted across the UAE, such as intelligent transport systems and environmentally sustainable construction, have contributed to a reduction in carbon emissions. Our findings highlight the need to continue to balance ambitious growth targets in the tourism sector and sustainable economic growth. It is essential to promote effective investments for tourism and economic growth by emphasising the role of renewable sources of energy. Renewable and sustainable environmental objectives have been at the core of the UAE’s national development strategies, and the findings of our study indicate that these initiatives have already had some impact on mitigating long-term environmental degradation. The UAE is a regional leader in the energy and sustainability sectors, and has a proven track record of investments in renewable energy, research and development, and climate action. The UAE was the first country in the region to ratify the Paris Agreement, to announce a Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, and to commit to economy-wide reductions in emissions. At the same time, the UAE has continued to grow and diversify its economy and is an established global hub for logistics, transportation, green technology, business, and tourism. In the lead up to COP28, the UAE will host the UNCTAD World Investment Forum from 16-20 October, the largest global platform for high-level dialogue and action investment for development. This year’s forum will include focused tracks on green investments in tourism and sustainable development and promoting climate finance and investment. Middlesex University Dubai looks forward to supporting the World Investment Forum as an Academic Partner where we have organised a special panel on the Alignment of Investment in Sustainable Infrastructure with the Paris Agreement that will showcase the private sector experiences from the UAE.From 30 November to 12 December, the UAE will bring the world together for COP28 at a critical moment for climate action. COP28 will be a milestone opportunity for the global community to take stock of the progress since the Paris Agreement. As the COP28 host country, the UAE is focused on driving practical and positive solutions for the climate and the economy and ensuring all efforts are underscored by principles of transformation, solidary, pragmatism and inclusivity. As a member of the Universities Climate Network, Middlesex University Dubai looks forward working to drive engagement among youth and academia with COP28. On 5 December, Middlesex University Dubai will co-host the Climate Law and Governance Day 2023, a premier international symposium that will bring together COP delegates, observers and stakeholders, alongside researchers, students, legal practitioners and experts, industry leaders, and government representatives. Together, we will share knowledge and ideas that aim to mobilise the international community to implement the UNFCCC and achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement, in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. This highly influential global conference is organised and co-hosted by the Climate Law and Governance Initiative, Middlesex University Dubai and University of Cambridge, together with many valued academic, industry and government partners from across the globe.By: Professor Cody Morris Paris Professor of Business, Sustainability, and Society Deputy Director for Research and Business MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY DUBAI CELEBRATES 10,000 ALUMNI Monday, 25 September 2023 We are honoured to be celebrating the incredible milestone of reaching over 10,000 members of our thriving Alumni community.
