Welcome to The Mwelu Foundation

EMPOWERING MATHARE’S YOUTH THROUGH CREATIVITY AND SRHR AWARENESS.

In the heart of Mathare Valley, a densely populated informal settlement in
Nairobi, hope thrives through creativity and advocacy.

The Mwelu Foundation, a community-based organization, empowers young people by
teaching photography, film, and life skills.

While fostering creative expression, the foundation also addresses critical
social issues, including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

By combining art and education, Mwelu Foundation is reshaping the lives of
Mathare’s youth and creating a more informed, empowered generation.

 * No child in Africa, and in fact anywhere in the world, should be denied
   education...

CHANGING LIVES AND COMMUNITIES

Mathare’s youth with life-changing SRHR knowledge. By addressing the
intersection of health and art, the foundation is fostering a generation that is
both skilled and socially aware.

WE ARE NON-PROFIT CHARITY AND NGO ORGANIZATION TO PROVIDE EMPOWERMENT TO MATHARE
YOUTHS.

In Mathare Valley, the Mwelu Foundation is a beacon of hope, creativity, and
empowerment. By integrating SRHR into its programs, it is tackling critical
issues head-on and creating a more informed and resilient generation.

Through the lens of a camera and the power of education, Mathare’s youth are
rewriting their stories and shaping a healthier, brighter future.

WHY SRHR MATTERS IN MATHARE VALLEY.

MATHARE VALLEY FACES SIGNIFICANT SRHR CHALLENGES, INCLUDING:

HIGH TEENAGE PREGNANCY RATES

Lack of access to contraception and SRHR education contributes to high rates of
early pregnancies.

LIMITED HEALTHCARE SERVICES

Many young people cannot afford or access reproductive health services.

STIGMA AND MISINFORMATION

Cultural taboos often prevent open discussions about sexual health.

INTEGRATING SRHR IN CREATIVE PROGRAMS

Storytelling Through Film

The foundation encourages young filmmakers to create short films that address
SRHR topics such as consent, contraception, menstrual hygiene, and gender
equality. These films serve as powerful tools to spark conversations and raise
awareness in Mathare and beyond.

Photography Projects

Photography workshops often include themes related to SRHR. For example,
participants document the impact of early motherhood, access to healthcare, or
community efforts to break taboos around sexual health.

Workshops and Discussions

Alongside creative training, the foundation organizes SRHR workshops, inviting
healthcare professionals and advocates to educate participants. These sessions
focus on practical topics like safe sex, reproductive rights, and access to
local health services.
