David Shields is the internationally bestselling author of twenty-four books,
including Reality Hunger (which, in 2020, Lit Hub named one of the most
important books of the past decade), The Thing About Life Is That One Day You’ll
Be Dead (New York Times bestseller), Black Planet: Facing Race During an NBA
Season  (finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and PEN USA
Award), Remote: Reflections on Life in the Shadow of Celebrity (PEN/Revson
Award), and Other People: Takes & Mistakes (NYTBR Editors’ Choice). The Very
Last Interview was published by New York Review Books in 2022.

The recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and two NEA fellowships, Shields—a
senior contributing editor of Conjunctions—has published essays and stories in
the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, Esquire, Yale Review, Salon, Slate, Tin
House, A Public Space, McSweeney’s, Believer, Huffington Post, Los Angeles
Review of Books, and Best American Essays.

His work has been translated into two dozen languages.

David Shields’s new film, How We Got Here: Melville Plus Nietzsche Divided by
the Square Root of (Allan) Bloom x Žižek (Squared) = Bannon, is now streaming on
Tubi (free but with ads); the companion volume of the same name will be
published by Sublation Books in January 2024. In Autofocus, Michael Wheaton
wrote that the film “should be required viewing for every Intro to Humanities
course in the country.” The novelist Dana Spiotta said about the book, “Shields
goes full velocity into this demented American moment, and he nails it.”

Shields’s work is discussed extensively in The Edinburgh Companion to the Essay
(Edinburgh University Press, 2023); the book also includes a new essay by
Shields.

He co-wrote the feature film I'll Show You Mine, which on June 23, 2023, will
begin streaming across multiple platforms (Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, Google
Play, Vudu, YouTube, Vimeo, Microsoft, and InDemand) and screening theatrically
nation-wide; the film is produced by Mark and Jay Duplass, directed by Megan
Griffiths, and stars Poorna Jagannathan and Casey Thomas Brown.

Shields’s film Lynch: A History, an ode to Marshawn Lynch’s use of silence,
echo, and mimicry as a form of resistance, is now streaming on Peacock, Peacock
Premium, Tubi TV, Sundance Now, DIRECTTV, Roku Premium, AMC, and Amazon Prime.

I Think You’re Totally Wrong: A Quarrel, which Shields co-wrote and co-stars in,
is now available on Vudu.
