We’re an insurance broker.

An insurance company can choose to underwrite only (like Intact) OR underwrite
and sell policies (like Desjardins). The latter is referred to as a direct
insurance company, the former a broker insurance company.

Companies that work with broker insurance companies are known as — you guessed
it — brokers! That’s what KBD is.

We offer insurance quotes online and we compare quotes from different insurance
companies to find you the best rate. With us, you get to speak to a real human
to help get you covered with confidence instead of purchasing 100% online.


HOW DOES KBD MAKE MONEY?

As a Canadian insurance broker, we collect a commission from each insurance
company we work with. We’re paid each year every time one of our clients’
policies renews. Commissions range from 12.5% – 20% on home and car insurance
and from 10% – 25% on commercial insurance policies.


IS IT CHEAPER TO BUY INSURANCE THROUGH KBD?

No, but it’s not more expensive either.

Insurance has several business models, the broker model being one of them.

Insurance companies go through cycles based on past business. That means an
insurance provider that is cheap one year might be expensive the next, and vice
versa. That’s why we operate as a broker, providing insurance from multiple
companies. It’s also why we recommend that our clients shop around every few
years. That’s the best way to find the best rates.

clients and with whom we have financial ties.


HOW DO I BUY INSURANCE FROM KBD?

Here’s how you can buy two types of insurance.

Personal Lines (home, car, condo, tenant, motorcycle) 

Option 1: Compare quotes online from Intact, Economical, and L’Unique. Then
finalize your policy with a broker.

Option 2: Call us directly for a quote and finalize your policy over the phone.

Commercial Lines

Option 1: Get a quote online from Intact, Economical, L’Unique, Lloyd’s, CFC
Underwriting & others. Then finalize your policy with one of our commercial
insurance brokers. This is recommended for small businesses (under 500K of
annual revenue).

Option 2: Call us directly for a quote and finalize your policy over the phone.
Be prepared with a copy of your current insurance policy to make sure the quote
we offer you is comparable in coverage to your old one. We can provide business
insurance to you even if it’s your first policy.


IS KBD LICENSED TO SELL INSURANCE IN CANADA?

Yes! We’re licensed to sell in Quebec and in Ontario…for now! 

We plan to expand throughout Canada. Our goal is to be a national insurance
broker, having a presence in each province, within 5 years.


HOW DO I KNOW IF A BROKER IS RIGHT FOR ME?

The insurance industry is big enough for insurance brokers and direct insurance
companies to coexist. There will always be those that prefer one and those that
prefer the other.

If you like options, choose a broker.

If you like the personalized service of dealing with the same group of people
every time, a broker is for you.

If you want access to a particular insurance company — like Intact — that only
offers coverage through a broker, go with a broker.

And if, based on your profile, a broker turns out to have cheaper quotes
available to you than a direct insurance company, then obviously, go with a
broker.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference and the price in
front of you.


CAN I MAKE CHANGES TO MY POLICY ONLINE?

Yes! You can request changes to your policy by visiting our Contact page and
selecting “Modify my policy online.” You can also request a callback and get an
online quote.
