State economist Christian Kaylor said federal data showed the combined Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro area saw job growth of 6.2% in 2021 — the 10th-fastest recovery among the country’s top metro regions. (Willamette Week) HEALTH * The Oregon Health Authority published its final daily press release on new COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations + cases on Friday as new infection rates plunge. Multnomah County reported 124 new cases that same day, compared to 2,376 cases reported on a day in early January during the peak of the Omicron wave. (Willamette Week) CLOSING * Park Avenue Fine Wines in downtown Portland is closing at the end of the month, or when all of its inventory is sold — whichever comes first. Adrien is originally from Texas, where she completed her philosophy doctorate. She will take over the role from Mark Mitsui in June, becoming the first woman of color to serve as PCC president. 🎓 (Willamette Week) LEGACY * Not all impactful Portlanders are human. Leah, a chimpanzee, was born at the Oregon Zoo on May 15, 1974. The zoo announced her passing at the age of 47 this week, remembering her as a “curious, playful spirit” and a friend to many, including Dr. Jane Goodall. Join the Conversation #PDXTODAY April 6, 2022 CROSSING THE COLUMBIA TAKES A TOLL David Rogoway Transportation officials in Oregon + Washington are still ironing out plans for a replacement bridge connecting the two states along Interstate 5 between Portland and Vancouver, but one thing drivers can bank on? Tolling. And it won’t be the first time the crossing has seen toll booths. A 5-cent toll was first levied when the original interstate bridge (today’s northbound lanes) opened to the public in 1917 and continued until 1929. After the southbound span was built, transportation officials once again charged a toll to help pay for the expansion and fund improvements to the northbound lanes.
