Artists, art organizations, audiences, fans and just about everyone else
would have preferred if the biggest arts story in Calgary was not the impact

 6. TEN NOTABLE ALBUMS FROM CALGARY-AREA ARTISTS IN 2021

While it would be nice to say that 2021 marked a return to normal in the
Calgary music scene, that’s not really the case. But, as with 2020, the
uncertainty caused by the pandemic and its intermittent lockdowns seemed to
spark the pent-up creativity in numerous acts. The sheer volume and
excellence of local albums and EPs matched last year’s haul in breadth,
depth and variety. Narrowing this down to 10 albums seems staggeringly
insufficient and more than a little unfair. But here are a few of the
records that stood out in 2021. Some marked the return of established
artists, others marked the arrival of major new talent. Some were spurred by
tragedy, others by politics and defiance. But they were all strong releases
in a very strong year for Calgary music.
