 1. The serial number format is the same. Japanese Mariner motors have a totally
    different serial number scheme, e.g. '6A3-S-123456 ' We currently do not
    have those here, but are largely useless. These motors do not have any
    consistent year-to-serial scheme. Mercury ceased publishing this information
    after the 1996 model year.
 2. OMC offered many engine combinations with the electric stringer sterndrive
    over the 15-year production life from 1962 to 1977. An alphanumeric model
    number schema was used from 1962 through 1972. Beginning in 1969 a more
    detailed schema was employed to detail the various mounting and steering
    options.
 3. OMC Outboards 1980 to 2004: STYLE: HORSEPOWER: SHAFT LENGTH: MODEL RUN or
    SUFFIX: J = Johnson (blank) = 15 in. (The Suffix codes and any codes before
    the Style entry aren't important to consumer) E = Evinrude L = 20 in.

In ordering any parts you will need to give the model listed on the nameplate
Primarily needed are (Make) (HP) (Year made) Secondary will be (Shaft length) &
(Start type)

If there is no 1st letter before the make letter, then this would have been a US
made motor
(Example. AJ15ELECF) = Australia, Johnson, 15hp, Electric start, long shaft,
1998, revision F.
If it is a 4 stroke there will be a number 4 just prior to the year
code(AJ15EL4ECF)
2 strokes will not have a number there.
Also a bit of extra info as for a not so common commercial 1999 25hp Johnson,
the model number could be AJ25RL3EEM. The A refers to Australia, the '3' in
there indicates three cylinders. 'R' is rope start. Or it could be AJ25RQEEM
with the Q referring to 3 cylinder trim/tilt

JOHNSON/EVINRUDE

The model number tag is located on the top outside edge of the CLAMP BRACKET;
or, on top of the SWIVEL BRACKET (port or starboard).

OMC Model Number Location


OMC ENGINES AND OUTDRIVE

The model and serial numbers of the vertical drive should be located on the
engine model and serial number plate. If the vertical drive model and serial
numbers are not recorded with the engine model and serial number, they can be
found on a plate located on the vertical drive. The transom mount model and
serial number plate is located on the inner transom plate.

MERCURY OUTBOARDS

The serial number tag is located on the SWIVEL BRACKET (port or starboard); or,
check the INSTRUCTION PLATE, located between the thumb screws above the steering
tube.

The serial number tag is located near the STARTER, by the flywheel housing; or,
on the ROCKER ARM or FLAME ARRESTOR COVER.Transom plates: The serial number tag
is located on the INNER TRANSOM PLATE inside the boat; or, on the UPPER SWIVEL
PIN.

STERNDRIVES

The serial number tag is located on the UPPER DRIVE SHAFT HOUSING (starboard
side or on the back of the housing).

The model number tag is located on the top outside edge of the CLAMP BRACKET;
or, on top of the SWIVEL BRACKET (port or starboard).

CLAMP BRACKET. If your engine is newer than 2011 you will use the engine serial
number instead of the model number.
