SUPPORT THE YOUTH OF MARLBOROUGH TO SHINE BRIGHT

FIND OUT MORE ↓

THE ‘SHOOTING FOR THE STARS’ CLUB ARE A PASSIONATE AND GENEROUS GROUP OF REGULAR
GIVERS WITH A VISION OF HELPING ALL OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO SHINE BRIGHT! PEOPLE
LIKE YOU!

⋆⭒˚.⋆

Purchase a ‘star’ and you will help support one young person through the Graeme
Dingle Foundation Marlborough life-changing programmes. In return, you’ll get
your very own star that represents the young person you are helping! Together we
can do more.

Your support will help continue our work with over 5,000 tamariki and rangatahi
right here in Marlborough!

THRIVING YOUNG PEOPLE | STRONG COMMUNITY

Shooting for the Stars is a fundraising initiative to support Graeme Dingle
Foundation Marlborough’s programmes – which helped 5,000 young people in
Marlborough last year!

We currently support around 50% of Marlborough’s tamariki (children) and
rangatahi (young people), and with your help we can do more!

We have 5 key support programmes at key transition periods in our young people’s
lives – to help them from age 5 to 25.

Today’s fast pace of change impacts on many levels within society - from
education to employment, from communication to mental health and wellbeing.

Our children need to learn skills and strategies to develop into resilient
people who can cope and thrive amongst this ongoing evolution and disruption.
They need to learn how to work together, understand other perspectives,
collaborate for mutual success, and how to bounce back from setbacks.

Our programmes support the development of these skills and values, so our young
people are able to overcome the challenges they will inevitably face in life.

We want every Marlborough child to know what they have inside is greater than
any obstacle - that they are all unique stars that can shine bright!

⋆⭒˚.⋆ SAM'S KIWI CAN STORY ⋆⭒˚.⋆

HERE'S WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS!

"It makes you stronger and builds your confidence, and convinces you you’re not
worthless. It has helped me get through rough times that might have ruined me
had I not gotten to go, to see how to overcome things and bounce back”
- SAM - KIWI CAN STUDENT

Sam* attends primary school in Marlborough and is one of over 60% of children in
the region who benefits from weekly Kiwi Can lessons. Since participating in the
programme, Sam, has never missed school on Kiwi Can day.

“It’s one of his favourite parts of the whole week,” says Sam’s mother. “The two
Kiwi Can leaders are among my son’s most favourite people in the world. You guys
are magic, thank you for your mahi.”

Sam’s teacher has noticed a marked difference as well saying that his increased
confidence in working and playing with others has also ‘spilled over’ from Kiwi
Can into his behaviour in the regular classroom.

“Sam has started to make good progress in school and is able to be calm to do
the work - and politely interacts with other kids.”

She also noted it has been great in terms of him having a positive male role
model in his Kiwi Can Leader and in his life.

Sam says “I have learnt things from Kiwi Can that will stay with me For life.
They are very important things that I think every kid needs to learn." * Sam’s
name has been changed to protect their anonymity.

⋆⭒˚.⋆ JAMIE'S TOROA STORY ⋆⭒˚.⋆

HERE'S WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS!

“She had been told by others (in other settings) that she wasn’t a “good friend”
because of her risky behaviours and poor role modelling. However, through Toroa
she proved herself as a good role model, and developed trusting friendships with
the other rangatahi, to the extent they now provide each other with positive
support in good times and bad”
- JAMIE'S PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Jamie had been identified as needing significant help to gain confidence and
become ‘work-ready’ before she could transition effectively to life beyond
college. She struggled with dyslexia and was considered ‘at risk’ and in need of
proactive intervention.

Jamie came into the Toroa programme and was highly motivated and engaged. She
enjoyed experiencing the support of her mentors and programme coordinator at
every step of the way.

Jamie has gone on to pass NCEA Level 2, passed her driver’s license and now has
a job! She has identified her longer-term career goals and is working her way
towards them.

Jamie has a “brighter future” and a clear vision of her pathway.

* Jamie’s name has been changed to protect her anonymity.

LET EACH STAR IN THE SKY SHINE ITS OWN LIGHT

difference we’re making – and get behind us so we can do more, together!

2023 IMPACT REPORT

WHY SHOULD I DONATE?

“In New Zealand, we are facing an alarming trend in the mental health and
wellbeing of our young people." (Dr Rachel Inder)

Our youth well-being statistics make for grim reading. The University of Otago
report that teenage depression rates have more than doubled in the last four
decades. Anxiety and mental distress is peaking amongst our young people as they
navigate the uncertainty of the world they are growing up in.

We all know someone who is struggling. Maybe it’s your child’s classmate,
neighbour, friend, or family member.

Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough is working hard to be the fence at the top
of the cliff – so we can get rid of the ambulance at the bottom. We believe that
all children and young people deserve the chance to reach their full potential.
That’s why our programmes support our young people to navigate the key
transition points in their lives from 5 to 25. Our programmes focus on providing
tools, techniques and strategies to help young people cope with challenges in
their lives, and connect them with mentors or role models to guide them on their
pathway to the future.

To carry out our essential work with local young people Graeme Dingle Foundation
Marlborough relies almost exclusively on the generosity of local business and
community support - from people like you - as we are almost totally locally
funded.

HOW DO I KNOW MY DONATIONS ARE MAKING A
DIFFERENCE?

You’ll receive updates and stories so you can see the life-changing difference
you’re making for young people! We’ll also be delighted to share our annual
Impact Report with you so you can here firsthand from those you’ve made a
difference for!

And if you are a regular giver we’ll also invite you to our Supporters’ Evenings
and other special events to see it for yourself. We can promise you that we use
your donations to make the greatest possible impact, and honour the investment
you have made in the next generation. At all times we pursue the highest
standards of integrity, stewardship, and accountability.

I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GRAEME DINGLE
FOUNDATION MARLBOROUGH. TELL ME ABOUT THE
WORK YOU DO WITH LOCAL CHILDREN AND YOUNG
PEOPLE?

Respect. Integrity. Positive relationships. Resilience.
At Graeme Dingle
Foundation Marlborough, they’re more than just words, they’re life-changing
lessons.

Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough has been supporting local children and
young people since 2011. We’re out there working across 20 local schools and
colleges with our five transformational programmes. In 2023 we reached almost
5,000 young people – working with the majority of those on a weekly basis.

Our team are dedicated to helping even more of Marlborough’s young people build
the resilience and self-belief to overcome any challenge that life throws at
them!

Right now we deliver proven programmes to young people across the Marlborough
region, from age 5 through to 25. Our programmes focus on providing tools,
techniques and strategies to help young people cope with challenges in their
lives, and connect them with mentors or role models to guide them on their
pathway to the future. We have the proven track record to help more kids at a
time that they need it most.

We can do more – but we need your help. The need for our programmes to support
our region’s young people is stronger than ever.

By working together and helping our children and young people, we can have a
powerful impact on creating and shaping the community we want in the future.
