INSTAGRAM AND DANCE

September 1, 2019September 1, 2019 shreeveenaLeave a comment

Instagram is one of the most used social media. Instagram is a visual-centric
sharing medium and hence attracting many people to use it (Instagram, 2010).

Events being promoted on social media is not a new thing to the millennial
generations as said by influencer Orchestration Network, 37% of the marketing is
done via electronic word of mouth promotions (Morgan, 2017). Also, 75% of the
event professionals say that Social media is the most effective tool to promote
events. With over 800 million active users, the reach for an event, workshop,
performances, festivals, etc. will be potentially strong when compared to
promotion through a traditional way. Let’s listen to the podcast where a dance
club’s social media coordinator tells us about her use for online space for the
promotion of their events.

Podcast

Instagram by itself has been trying to help its business accounts by providing
them with special and additional features to reach out to a mass set of
audiences. Here is where Instagram story’s clickable links and the swipe up
features come into the picture, which turned out to be the real game-changers
for event managers or marketing teams. With this feature, it has become easy for
these platforms to talk more/ imprint into the public about the event or provide
the users with links to the ticket booking pages, etc. Moreover, if the pictures
for Instagram are shared over the other social networking site it has 23% more
chance of engagement (Christy, 2018). Promotion over Instagram is the strongest
marketing tool these days.

Making use of the usual Instagram features like Live, IGTV, Stories, hashtags,
polls, and boomerang video posts, etc during the event will keep it up for those
who couldn’t attend.

With social media in the picture, telling a story and spreading the buzz is a
few clicks away while reaching out to a massive set of audience.

UNFOCUSED

Video

For a very long time now, I have meant to start a YouTube channel but never
picked up my courage to do so. As far as I’m concerned, this video (with me in
it) is not just for an assignment of mine, this is the initial effort that I
have ever took to produce a video. My presence on YouTube as a vlogger is fairly
new, hence making this a personal and close to heart video.

Being unfocused for a long time at school, at work, in sports, within cousins
and family, etc. has had created an urge for m to be in the spotlight. This
video is a combination of information about my personal interests, my
aspirations and goals, my studies, etc.

MAKING THE VIDEO:

‘A friend in need is a friend indeed.’ – Quintus Ennius

A friend of mine was kind enough to take some time out help me shoot. She was
patient while shooting even in the time of repetitive muddles.

I planned on shooting prior and adding the voiceover later, as I didn’t want to
fumble in front of the camera, taken that this is my first video. The shots were
ethically composed. Also, I wanted to portray my authentic self while shooting
which was why it was shot in many places where I usually spend most of my time
i.e. the video starts at the entrance of a park where I usually go; my cozy
room; my armchair in which I relax and have my coffee and have a little me time
(of course that chair didn’t have arms :p).

The audio selection was the tough part, I wanted soft traditional music to match
my content. I had to listen to 40-45 tracks before I finalized the five which I
have used in my video.  And to be honest the voice over part was no piece of
cake. I had to record over infinite takes before I used to get the perfect
composition. The timing of the video and the voice over were monitored with at
most attention. I had gained better insights on editing when compared to prior
to this assignment video execution.

Lessons Learnt:

 * I learnt how to ethically resource the content.
 * I now understand the importance of consent, copyrights and licensing.
 * I have a perspective on how to start my YouTube channel now.
 * I gained knowledge on planning, composition, execution and editing a video.
(I have also learnt that it is always wise to shoot a video on landscape
   rather than on portrait).

WEEK 9: TESTING- FIFTH LAP

May 11, 2018May 20, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

Testing:

The final and significant module of design thinking. The key moto of this stage
is to record the user experience. By testing our prototype we get the feedback
from the user and this feedback can help us improve and modify our idea and
prototype which is more user-friendly.

With our group winding up the prototype design the previous week, we started to
test our app. We asked few of our classmates to give their opinion about our
app, and also each group member asked 2-3 people apart from our class circle
using a test card.

Test Card

I have asked few of my friends to give their opinion about our app and this is
how they reciprocated.

Questions asked:

 1. Will you uninstall the app due to privacy concern?
 2. Will you stop and look around.
 3. Will you have a conversation with some strangers
 4. How many stars you rate for the safety level?

 * Respondent 1: Ashley, 20

Privacy is my concern, but this app sounds very interesting. I want to try it
for a little while before deciding whether to uninstall it or not.

Yes, I will stop and look around with the help of this app.

I like socializing and interacting with new people (that is how we make
friends). So, I would like to jump in and start a conversation with a person or
two. Anyway, I won’t do anything on the tram ride, might as well make some new
friends!!!

3/5 stars.

 * Respondent 2: CHANDRA SHEKAR, 22

I am a little absent minded on the road so if some app is giving me the liberty
to use my phone while on road but is also helping me to stay focused on road, I
like this idea. And coming to privacy issues, this app is providing the
invisible option. So, I would not uninstall this app.

I love video games and this game seems to be an interactive part of the app. And
I like the rewards point part, being able to redeem the actual cash motivates me
to play this game often and while playing I will definitely look around.

When I have a choice of other social networks, why will I use Friend around?
Just to socialize? Conversation with strangers can happen on Instagram or
Facebook also. So, I wouldn’t prefer a specific app for this purpose.

6.5/10.

Along with the other feedbacks(including 15 feedback, of which the ratings on an
average was 3.5/5), our group concludes this design process after making few
minor changes in the prototype.

WEEK 8: A SECOND ROUND OF LAP FOUR; PROTOTYPING.

May 5, 2018May 17, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

This week we finalized the name and functions of our app. This app works on two
functions ‘LOOKAROUND’ and ‘FRIENDAROUND’, in the context of safety and social
interaction. These apps were proposed by keeping in mind the keen aspects
like privacy and safety. LOOKAROUND gives the user the liberty to use other apps
while this app runs in the background because of which even the battery is
saved. LOOKAROUND and FRIEND AROUND run on a GPS tracker of the smartphone.

How does LOOKAROUND function:

 * The app runs on the GPS tracker in the background. It is activated mainly
when we are walking. So, if you are approaching a signal or a junction
‘LOOKAROUND’ notification pop’s up on the phone’s screen.
 * If the user doesn’t intend to play the game, he/ she can simply stop walking
and wait for 10  seconds for the pop-up to go.
 * But if the user rather chooses to use LOOKAROUND he/she can hit on the play
   button.
 * Once we hit the play button, the phone’s camera will be activated and the
user starts collecting virtual coins that are around him/her especially near
signals. The main intention is to make the user stop and look at their
   surroundings.
 * Later, he/ she can redeem all the coins they have collected or receive it in
the form of a reward. This encourages them to use the app more often.

How does FRIENDAROUND function:

 * The app runs on the GPS tracker in the background. It is activated mainly
when we are in a public transport i.e. train, bus, tram. A FRIENDAROUND
notification pops-up when there are others using this app. This is a
chat-based app for the purpose of social interaction.
 * If the user doesn’t wish to chat with anyone they are also given the option
   to ‘Go Invisible’
 * But if the user rather chooses to use FRIENDAROUND he/she can look upon who’s
around them and say a ‘Hi!’ and can make new friends.
 * The user can accept or ignore the message request according to their will.

These are the final prototypes that our group has come up with.

WEEK 7: PROTOTYPE- FORTH LAP

April 29, 2018May 18, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

Prototype:

A prototype is a sample model of a product built to test a concept. This
prototype is a basic part of the design thinking process which leads our way to
the testing process. It is a simple experiment of a proposed solution because it
is quick and cheap, that could be used to test to take the opinions and make
corrections further.

We came up with the idea of an app that runs in the background as the solution
to our question. This app is very interactive, user-friendly and it doesn’t
disturb your daily activities because it runs in the background. It is of two
parts, a game; to be aware of their surroundings and a chat ground; for social
interaction. Hence, we started working on the prototype for our app.

WEEK 6: IDEATION- THIRD LAP

April 21, 2018May 16, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

Ideation:

It is an important module of design thinking. It is the creative procedure of
generating, developing and communication latest ideas which comprises of the
elements like innovation, actualization, and progression. This process includes
sketching, brainstorming, brainwriting, worst possible idea. And in this third
stage of design thinking, we started off with brainstorming sessions.

We started our ideation process by focusing on our question;

 1. How might we inspire avid smartphone users to interact more with their
    surroundings while using their phones?
 2. How might the surroundings inspire the avid use of smartphones to engage
    with their surroundings?

Everyone in the group is provided with a paper and a pen to throw their ideas on
the paper in the form of an art or a sketch or a writing. Later, we presented
each other’s ideas within the group. We are planning to improvise the ideas that
we think will become the solution to this question.

WEEK 5: THE SECOND ROUND OF LAP 2; DEFINING CONTINUES….

April 15, 2018May 16, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

Starting off, after a long lazy break…

Commenced by categorizing the previous post-its to verbalize a focused question.
Groped them according to the color to focus on the different set of issues that
must be covered to define the problem.

This process helped us conclude our main aim to extract the perfect solution, by
choosing the focus group to be the youngsters i.e. people in between the age
group 18-26. It is not possible for a person to completely cut off their phone
in the corporate business world, leading us on defining the focus question to
the target group and that is:

 1. How might we inspire avid smartphone users to interact more with their
    surroundings while using their phones?
 2. How might the surroundings inspire the avid use of smartphones to engage
    with their surroundings?

Thus, defining these questions and deriving that this is giving one the liberty
of using the phone while being aware of the surroundings which is user-friendly
and more approachable.

WEEK 4: DEFINE- SECOND LAP

April 1, 2018May 16, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

The previous week we put up a survey on Google forms and collected our primary
data. The results were yielded from 178 respondents. Starting with general
questions like age and gender, the form asked few more questions about their
use of smartphones on that day and where ever they were using it. Incorporating
and observing all this information into our plan, we have decided
categorize them into three personas.

Define:

The step define plays a vital role in the process of design thinking for us to
define an accurate problem statement. This step challenges the designers to
focus on to the point of the problem statement without deviating from the topic.
We used Affinity maps to define our problem and the focus group.

WEEK 3: EMPATHISE- FIRST LAP

March 24, 2018May 16, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

The third week hit off with our problems question and the cause. If work isn’t
fun you are not playing on the right team and as a team, the wicked problem we
chose was ‘ How to encourage people to stare less at their mobile phones?’

Empathise:

For us to empathize is when we put ourselves in the shoes of the other person
who’s facing or dealing with the problem, to understand what exactly or how do
they feel.

To perceive the problem and the question better we followed the
Stanford d.school’s design thinking process. And this week we empathized with
the question, understood the challenge, identified the target group and broke
down the problem by

 * Brainstorming causes
 * Creating mind map
 * Collecting opinions from people via survey to create primary data.

WEEK 2: WHAT’S INSIDE A DESIGNERS MIND?

March 18, 2018March 24, 2018 shreeveenaLeave a comment

Week 2 lecture, Alas!!! I wish I was there. Missed my ACG708’s second class for
an inescapable emergency. I regret not being there in the class because of the
fun marshmallow challenge that I slide out off. Bravo to my teammates who built
an amazing prototype.

A glimpse of the prototype.

So in this weeks post, I’ll just be writing about my insight of the recording on
the cloud account. Thank god for the technology that saved my day.

What exactly is in a designers mind?

It is a lot of things together and the main thing is creativity. I define this
creativity as a bold step one takes to break the stereotype. Giving a chance to
the ‘What if’s’, ‘Maybe’s’, and ‘Why not?’. A perfect composition of
feasibility, desirability, and viability constructs the innovation.

WICKED PROBLEM:

A wicked problem is a problem that doesn’t have a solution (sometimes due to the
changing requirements of the problem).   It has a very complex and deeper
structure making it hard to define. For example Poverty, depression, global
warming, etc.
