ASSOCIATION OF ULTRA-PROCESSED FOOD CONSUMPTION WITH COLORECTAL CANCER RISK
AMONG MEN AND WOMEN: RESULTS FROM THREE PROSPECTIVE US COHORT STUDIES

Over a 24-year-period, more than 200,000 men (n=46,341) and women (n=159,907)
had dietary intake assessments performed every four years via survey. During the
period, 3,216 CRC cancer cases were reported. Men with the highest 20% of
ultra-processed food consumption had a 29% higher risk of developing colorectal
cancer. For women, no association was seen between ultra-processed food
consumption and risk of CRC. Ready-to-eat meat products and sugar-sweetened
drinks among men and ready-to-eat/heat mixed dishes among women had the highest
risk of CRC. Yogurt and dairy-based desserts had a negative associated risk for
women.

RESPONSE TO ACUTE MONOTHERAPY FOR MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER IN RANDOMIZED,
PLACEBO CONTROLLED TRIALS SUBMITTED TO THE US FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION:
INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANT DATA ANALYSIS

Study: This meta-analysis includes 232 randomized, double-blind,
placebo-controlled trials of drug monotherapy for major depressive disorder
submitted to the FDA between 1979 and 2016, and comprises nearly 75,000 adult
and child participants. Conclusion: Patients with depression are likely to
improve substantially from acute treatment of their depression with drug or
placebo. Although the mean effect of antidepressants is only a small improvement
over placebo, the effect of active drug seems to increase the probability that
any patient will benefit substantially from treatment by about 15%.

“NO CONVINCING EVIDENCE” THAT DEPRESSION IS CAUSED BY LOW SEROTONIN LEVELS, SAY
STUDY AUTHORS

The idea that depression is brought on by decreased serotonin activity or
concentrations is unsupported, according to the authors of a systematic umbrella
review, who also challenge the rationale behind the high rates of antidepressant
prescription. They claim that certain medical professionals continue to promote
the incorrect chemical imbalance explanation of depression, and the public as a
whole still accepts it. However, other medical professionals argue that
antidepressants continue to be a helpful treatment option for patients in
addition to other methods like talking therapy and that the idea that depression
is caused by a straightforward chemical imbalance is outdated in any case.

Who we are, and what we stand for

The BMJ is defined by its mission: to work towards a healthier world for all. We
share that global endeavor with millions of readers working in clinical
practice, research, education, government, and with patients and the public too.

This mission defines us, far more than the format of our content. After nearly
180 years, our print edition still thrives, and has been joined by podcast,
video, tweet, app, website and live events. But, as each of these formats gains
ground or declines in importance, the things The BMJ cares about will endure:

• Improving the creation and dissemination of research evidence
• Improving clinical education and practice
• Advocating for universal, equitable, high quality healthcare
• Championing the health and wellbeing of doctors
• Improving the social and environmental determinants of health

While pursuing these goals, we commit to partnering with patients and the public
to ensure their best interests are served; and to being as transparent and
accountable as possible in everything we do.

The BMJ can be many things to its diverse audiences: an international research
journal, a member magazine, a think tank, an investigative campaigner, an
educational resource, even a trusted and inspiring friend. Whatever The BMJ
means to you, we invite you to share our mission and join us in working towards
a healthier world for all.
