Book a Free Consult

Perim Media began in in 2011 as Perim Associates, LLC, a Middle East-focused law
& economics consultancy. For ten years, we helped some of the world's most
prestigious law firms understand the background to complex political and
cross-border disputes. While we enjoyed the work, we felt this wasn't enough. We
wanted to tell stories for bigger audiences, about issues that were important to
us. We expanded our content offering to include climate and health-related
events design.
‍
Perim had its first major events success conceiving, selling, and then building
one of the first major events focused on climate change in the Red Sea and East
Africa.

The 2015 Environmental Risk & Opportunity (ERO) Summit, hosted by the President
of the Republic of Djibouti in partnership with Yale University and the World
Bank, attracted 60 Ministers of Environment and Health from 14 countries in the
region, Europe, and the Gulf, and was attended by several of the world’s most
distinguished climate scientists. US Secretary of State John Kerry called it a
"major step forward in environmental policy coordination."

Since then, Perim has helped design content and recruited speakers for high
profile events and seminars all over the world. We have helped build lasting
relationships between investment funds, universities, medical centers, research
laboratories, and NGOs across thousands of miles.
‍
Our communications clients have included environmental tech startups, major
corporations, renewable energy companies, non-governmental organizations,
& government ministries.

We have run research projects and helped write speeches for senior politicians
and executives -- including a then-future US President, Senators,
Parliamentarians, Heads of State, and CEOs of multinational companies.
‍
After a Covid hiatus, we reconvened in 2021 to focus on what we do best,
creating high-quality, persuasive content that encourages understanding and
innovation in the areas we care about most: environment, healthcare, and human
development.
‍
"Perim" (Mayyun, in Arabic) is a small but strategic island near the lower
entrance to the Red Sea, between Arabia and Africa. We chose the name because it
represents the innate connectivity of the Middle East and Africa.

Our logo is a stylized representation of Dracaena Cinnibari -- more commonly
known as the Dragon's Blood Tree, for its bright red sap, prized by ancient Near
Eastern civilizations for its medicinal properties -- and used more recently as
an ingredient in the reddish dye that gives Stradivarius violins their unique
warm color.

‍Cinnibari is endemic to the island of Socotra, which is located between Yemen
and Somalia. It is  threatened by climate change, which is altering the mists
the tree relies upon to propagate its seeds. This beautiful tree is an apt and
powerful symbol for sustainability, and the interdependence between humans and
nature.

Creation Stories

We mine your assets and history to tell a story about value -- and values: Where
you come from, why you exist, the value you and your organization brings to the
world, its community, and its employees. Why people should pay attention to what
you’re doing.

Conference Design & Content

We create conference concepts and speaking pools and activities that attract
audiences, generate loyalty, and leave something valuable behind.

Publishing & Digital Media

We work with exceptionally talented partners in all media to translate your
story into multiple forms, from digital content, to documentaries, books that
jump off the table.

Legal Content

We help law firms and mediators understand the political, social and economic
background to Middle East and Africa related matters.  We have provided lead
expert testimony ourselves, and identified the top experts in many highly
specialized fields.

Speechwriting & Opinion

We work with senior executives to create narratives that inspire and direct
people to action -- mainly on climate, investment, and humanitarian issues, but
other issues as well.  We have written speeches and briefs for Presidents,
Ministers, CEOs, and NGO directors, and many others whose work (nearly) defies
description.

Speaker Recruitment

We use our global networks to match ideas and conferences with unique,
interesting, passionate speakers whose insights your audiences will remember for
years.

Film, Documentary & Podcast

We are creatives, who particularly love working on storyboards and treatments
for spoken media that inspire people to individual and collective action.

The StoryTelling Process
We are storytellers. How we get from raw material to a finished product varies
from client to client and situation to situation.
Discovery

We often start with 360-degree interviews with stakeholders to understand
internal and external perceptions of the organization’s vision and purpose.

We then sift through the organization’s past and present for narrative elements
that are potentially undervalued -- or not used at all.

Project Design

With powerful narratives in place, we help clients translate their stories to
their most effective media -- whether print, social, documentary, podcast, etc.

The most effective storytelling is backed up by compelling evidence. We collect
and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to identify clients’ most
meaningful environmental and social impact, and areas of improvement over time.
That information supports ESG-related reporting, and is integrated back into the
central narrative.

We look for discrete projects or achievements that encapsulate an organization’s
identity, values, and impact. If suitable ("accessible") projects do not exist,
we help create them. We work with the client to define creative and achievable
demonstrations of technology, strategy, etc; we bring in value-adding
partnerships, and coordinate execution to attract notice from target
demographics.

The StoryTelling Process
We are storytellers. How we get from raw material to a finished product varies
from client to client and situation to situation.

Discovery

We typically start with 360-degree interviews of senior officers, employees, and
external stakeholders to get a sense of the organization’s vision and purpose,
and how it is seen by clients and the public. We sift through the organization’s
past and present for undervalued narrative elements. We have found that
high-functioning organizations are often so focused on the present, they
discount both past accomplishments and the broader environment in which they
work.

Project Design

Self-contained projects and public events are valuable tools with which to
amplify – and at times, simplify – story arcs.  We look for projects (completed
or in-progress) that encapsulate an organization’s identity, values, and impact.
If such “representative” projects do not exist, we look for ways to create
them, and then weave them into the story. These are not “dummy projects,” but
active demonstrations of broader current or potential impact.

Impact Assessment

We work with our partners to provide quantitative and qualitative measures like
polling, focus groups, indices, that highlight clients’ real environmental and
social impact – and what drives it. This process yields hard metrics that can be
integrated into a variety of existing environmental and social reporting
frameworks.

Translation to Effective Media

Once we have established a candidate story arc, signposts and supporting
evidence, we help the client translate the story to its most effective media,
whether that’s social, documentary shorts, traditional print, exhibitions,
films, speeches, podcasts, etc.

We have written speeches for Presidents, Ministers, and CEOs.

We have created treatments and scripts for documentary films and graphic novels.

We have created long-term social media campaigns.

We have created advertising, fundraising promotion campaigns for dozens of
social ventures.

We have collectively hundreds of features and Op-Eds for the world’s top print
and on line magazines.

We are currently working, with Kulturalis, on a series of graphics-heavy ‘how
to’ books on emerging humanitarian technologies, targeted at fund managers, and
journalists.

‍

Conference Design

In 2014 we pitched an idea for a conference that addressed future climate
adaptation needs of the Red Sea and East Africa. We developed the concept and
speaker list and pitched it to hosts, partners and sponsors. In 2015 the event
was hosted by the President of Djibouti, with Yale University Climate and Energy
Institute, the World Bank and the Djibouti Center for Education and Research
(CERD) as content partners.  The Summit drew 60 ministers of Energy and
Agriculture from 14 countries, and was considered at the time a significant
contribution to climate policy awareness in East Africa and the Red Sea.  Some
of this work was informed by principals’ participation in a 2011 Gulf Counter
Piracy conference, where they helped identify panel topics, recruit high-profile
and deep-expert speakers, and oversee the production of Conference Proceedings,
which were published in an edited volume.

Organizational Narratives

Perim principals helped one Middle East conglomerate (re)-tell an
under-recognized aspect of its development contribution to Africa.  Partly for
cultural and political reasons, the company was hesitant to ‘flag’ the novelty
of its approach to mixing business and economic development.  We helped re-tell
the story in a politically and culturally appropriate way, by placing it within
the context of the home country’s decades-long interactions with Africa (a
‘National’ theme), as well as the company’s ability to use its native
intelligence to recognize and act on a fleeting opportunity with significant
commercial and geopolitical consequences.  We then quantified / estimated the
direct and indirect development impact of the company’s work over the previous
10 years. We shaped the story into a 100-page, illustrated book, which was used
to inform communications in other media, and a variety of company legal claims.
This effort has informed much of Perim’s approach to integrating storytelling
and research ever since.

In-house Publications

In 2016 Perim launched AR3 Magazine (Africa Risk, Resilience and
Reconstruction), featuring detailed profiles of environmental tech
organizations, sustainable or environment-focused regional businesses, and
interviews with leaders in environmental science, culture, tech, law, and
conservation. The magazine, which ran for two years, became a model for our
approach to the design, content and publication of in-house magazines,
coffee-table books, and themed social media campaigns. We have partnered with
Kulturalis, publisher of high-end, illustrated art books to produce a new
storytelling channel focused on regional (Middle East/ Africa) environment and
culture.

Project Design

Perim (operating as Avicenna Group) arrived in Benghazi, Libya in July 2011 to
use its connections in academic and medical technology to help develop Libya’s
healthcare system during a period of acute crisis.  Over the course of the
following three years, we worked with the University of California San Francisco
(UCSF), the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM) to develop a
strategy focused on emergency medicine, and recruited Harvard teaching hospitals
to be implementation partners.  The result was a $20m MOU which was to be signed
the day following the 2012 attack on the US mission in Benghazi.  Elements of
the program continued over the following years.  Perim worked in parallel with
EyePACS on delivering diagnostic training for diabetic retinopathy and
collecting epidemiological data on diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in Libya,
Turkey, and Djibouti.

Legal Support and Expert-Search

Several of Perim’s principals have served as testifying experts and advisors on
international legal matters.  Our areas of expertise relate to specific aspects
of the political, economic, and cultural aspects of the Middle East and Africa.
Through our networks we source other hard-to-find experts and resources, all
providing language support (translation/interpretation). We have also worked pro
bono to support asylum cases.
