The $100,000 prize, to be awarded at a gala in her honor, also includes an artist residency at MIT in spring 2025. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Skylar Tibbits invents self-organizing systems and programmable materials to tackle complex challenges, from sea level rise to airplane efficiency. “I am passionate about creating polymath designers at MIT who can apply design to any other discipline,” he says. ALUMNI IN ACTION Philip Adama Abel ’15 is working to ensure economic security for those in his native Nigeria through his fintech startup, Cleva. “We are making it easier for businesses and remote workers to be paid,” he says. RESEARCH As Earth’s temperature rises, agricultural practices will need to adapt. MIT researchers are taking on the challenge from a variety of angles, from engineering plants that sound an alarm under stress to making seeds more resilient to drought. IN THE MEDIA Michael John Gorman of the MIT Museum spoke with the Boston Globe on how science museums can help facilitate the “pleasure of finding things out.” Gorman added that museums “can give people that spark, that hunger to learn and to dive in deeper.” RESEARCH Researchers used a quantum computer to emulate how electrons move between atoms within an electromagnetic field. The approach could help uncover materials for faster or more powerful electronics. “We are in a very exciting place for the future,” Ilan Rosen says. WANT MORE ABOUT MIT?
