Games I write about video games, entertainment and culture. * Share to Facebook * Share to Twitter * Share to Linkedin Here's today's Wordle #268 answer plus a helpful hint. SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world, folks. We’re just finally clambering our way out of a global pandemic (can we start chanting “burn masks burn!” yet?) and without batting an eye we’re tiptoeing our way toward World War III. And all of this while climate change is intensifying! You can almost see that calamity rubbing its palms together and twirling its mustache like some diabolical supervillain just waiting in the wings, cackling darkly. But hey, at least we have Wordle. It may be a small comfort in times such as these, but I’ll take small comforts over none at all. Wordle, of course, is the clever little word game developed by Josh Wardle for his wife during the pandemic as a fun, and deeply nerdy, gift. I say nerdy with the deepest admiration. After all, Wardle cashed in big when he sold the game to the New York Times. And here we are, 268 days later with one of my favorite words so far. Let’s hop down and take a look at the hint and the solution. FOR WORDLE NEWBIES, I HAVE A FEW LINKS TO GET YOU STARTED: * For those new to the game, read this Wordle primer before you start playing and learn about how this fad got started. * Then, if you want some advanced tactics to get those low guess answers, you can read our Wordle Tips and Tricks guide here. * I also have a new piece on the best Wordle starting word—and why it isn’t what you think. Sorry if that’s a bit vague, but it’s all I’ve got. The answer is . . . . Wordle 268 answer Credit: Erik Kain Smelt! I got lucky on this one. I was texting a friend this weekend about some drama and I said something to the effect of ‘the only thing blame is good for is as a Wordle starting guess.’ When I set out to do today’s Wordle I thought, why not try it? Sure enough, blame came through, giving me ‘L’ ‘M’ and ‘E’ in yellow boxes. I figured if the ‘E’ wasn’t at the end, the ‘L’ probably would be, and I guessed smell. Well, I was wrong about the ‘L’ (and frankly a little shocked when I got all the first four letters in green but not the fifth one!) but it was still about the best guess possible short of a win on #2. And from here my options were basically...smelt. What else could work? Smelting, of course, is the process of melting ore to separate different types of metal from it—something all dwarven blacksmiths are familiar with as they hammer out their mithril mail and silver axes, their iron helms and steel blades. It may be Monday, but I hope you have a great one and a terrific week. For many, it’s the start of Spring Break. Go have some fun! St. Patrick’s Day is coming!
