Q WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?

As manager of recreation facilities, I look after two community centres with ice
pads and all the parks, trails and sports fields throughout the Township of
Douro-Dummer.

Q HOW MANY STAFF WORK AT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

We have approximately 10 full-time, part-time/seasonal staff in the recreation
department.

Q WHAT IS THE AGE OF YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

Our facility is 43 years old. It was constructed in 1980.

Q WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOUR RECREATION FACILITY IN YOUR COMMUNITY/CITY?

Our location is likely what differentiates our facility. Having two ice rinks in
our township and the proximity to neighbouring municipalities, we have a number
of different minor hockey systems that practice in our facility.

Q WHAT SERVICES/PROGRAMS DO YOU PROVIDE AT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

We are an indirect service provider but help facilitate a wide variety of
rentals and programs such as weddings, Christmas parties, family gatherings,
Jack-and-Jill events, birthday parties, roller skating/roller derby league,
public skating, youth and adult hockey, ball hockey, lacrosse, agricultural and
farm training/events, dog training, senior exercise class/meetings, hockey
tournaments, bootcamp classes, dry surface — hot tub expo, craft sales,
auctions, outdoor movie nights, and meeting space for local
businesses/associations.

Q SHARE A SIGNIFICANT EVENT OR OTHER IMPACTFUL MOMENTS THAT OCCURRED AT YOUR
RECREATION FACILITY.

In March of 2022, Douro Minor Hockey made a submission to Kraft Hockeyville for
the Township of Douro-Dummer to be crowned Kraft Hockeyville 2022. After
countless hours of planning and organizing events by our Douro Minor Hockey, the
Township of Douro-Dummer made the Top 4 in all of Canada. Through all the hard
work, Douro Minor Hockey received $10,000 to be used for hockey equipment and
the township received $25,000 for facility upgrades. It was really something to
see the community come together and support the efforts of our minor hockey in
the quest to be named Kraft Hockeyville 2022.

Q WHAT MEASURE HAVE YOU TAKEN TO ENSURE YOUR RECREATION FACILITY IS ACCESSIBLE
TO EVERYONE?

It starts with our facility’s front entrance being free and clear of any stairs
or curbs for a smooth transition into the building. We have an easy access into
our first multipurpose room right off the main entrance that is mainly occupied
by our seniors’ club. We have an elevator that services our main hall upstairs.
We have also provided some space in the main lobby for wheelchairs to view the
events out on the playing surface. It is also a requirement to make all signage
and advertising conform to ADOA standards.

Q SHARE ANY FUN FACTS OR HISTORICAL REFERENCES ABOUT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY.

It is quite impressive when you look up to the rafters in our facility. Since
the 2001-2002 season, we have seen our minor hockey system raise 21 D and DD All
Ontario Champions banners and add another 15 finalist banners as well. It is one
thing for a team to make it to the finals but to have 36 teams in the last 20
years do so is quite the feat. It shows the dedication that our coaches and
volunteers have in our community and the drive and passion that our kids have
for the sport.

Q ANY NEW CHANGES OR FUTURE PLANS YOU CAN SHARE ABOUT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

The township has formed a new ad-hoc committee on the future of the community
centres. Our community centres are aging and in need of improvements. It is our
goal to review each facility in its entirety and the needs of the community to
lay out the best possible plan. Depending on the outcome of our studies this
could either include a major renovation with energy efficiencies or a completely
new build.
