5 Steps to The Perfect Artist Biography
A strong artist biography that engages your target audience is often overlooked
- but is KEY to building your personal brand. It can either bring your fans on
an engaging journey or make them walk away. I've put together all the
ingredients you need to create YOUR perfect bio: Everyone has a different
strategy for creating a bio. Over the years I have found consistent success by
following these 5 steps: • Brainstorm "What" & "Why" • Find Target Audience •
Create a "Life Map" • Nail the Pitch • The Engaging Journey Before I get into
the specifics of each step - I want to point out that there are generally two
audiences for a long-form artist biography. Fans and Target Audience Bloggers /
Media / PR Keep in mind that you'll want a little for both! With that in mind –
let’s get to it. Grab a pen and paper so you can work along with the process.
The 5 Steps Step 1: Brainstorm YOUR "What" & "Why" - Grab a blank piece of
notebook paper. For 15 minutes, do a complete brain dump on any of the topics
below. Don't be scared to write whatever comes to mind - the important part is
that you get your thoughts on paper. The Brainstorm The primary focus of this
exercise is figuring out how to convey WHAT you're doing - and WHY you're doing
it to the audience. This is going to be CRITICAL in building a strong story. •
What makes you different • Major struggles/achievements • Core values Step 2:
Find Your Target Audience - What are their interests and values? What is the
primary demographic? How do they communicate? Jot these down and ask yourself -
"How can I use my story to connect with my audience on a deeper level?" If you
aren't sure what your target audience is like, start with your social media
platforms and Spotify. You can get a good idea from your listener demographics
on Spotify. Connect with your followers and learn about them. This is web3 and
that's important. There are tools you can use on most platforms that will allow
you to learn about your audience more. Try using polls or asking open-ended
questions to gauge your audience's interest in certain topics. This won’t just
be beneficial in creating your artist biography – it will help guide your
creative direction in a way that best meets the expectations of your fans! If
you have yet to build an audience in web3 - check out my blog post on Finding
1000 True Fans. Step 3: Create Your Life Map - There are a lot of ways you can
do this. I like to draw so a made a doodle. Here's one I made for my band The
Conservators: The Conservators Life Map Cheesy and a bit eccentric? Maybe... But
it's very real. Try to piece together the most important events in your musical
journey (or whatever your passion is)! You can draw it like mine - or use a flow
chart. You can make flow charts in Microsoft Word by clicking “Insert” >
“SmartArt” on the toolbar. Additionally, you might use a tool like Notion or
your own personal favorite platform. Make sure you unleash some creative energy
and make it interesting. Step 4: Nail The Elevator Pitch - The hard truth is
that 90% of people won't finish your amazing bio if you don't nail the elevator
pitch. This is the hook. The first paragraph of your bio should serve to
immediately interest readers and give something that the media can use. In this
intro to your bio, you'll want to cover: • Who you are • Influences / similar
artists • Major accomplishments • Current projects Step 5: The Artists Journey -
Now that we've got the short-form bio done, it's time for the juicy stuff. The
Artist's Journey Look back at your brainstorm and life map. I want you to use
the framework of "The Hero's Journey" to build out a captivating story that
allows your audience to relate to you. Here's where you can be vulnerable and
write something truly interesting. In a few paragraphs, summarize: • Your Call
to Adventure - why did you start creating music or art? • Threshold - what
barriers did you overcome? • The Abyss - lowest point? • The Return - How it
made you who you are. Make it special to you. By this point - you should have a
pretty captivating long-form biography for your website or NFT project. Make
sure to make a draft and pass it by a few close friends for feedback! If anyone
has a biography drafted, I would be happy to take a look! If you would like to

WELCOME TO THE BLOG

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone, my name is Zach.

I’m a guitar player, songwriter, and music lover in the Web3 space.

From the moment I heard about the opportunities that independent artists have in
the Web3 and NFT space, I was hooked.

Every day I listen, learn, and through my own trial and error figure out how to
navigate this ever changing space. If I learn something interesting enough, I
write it down.

My hope is that if I write enough of these thoughts and experiences down, maybe
you can learn something from it too.

Here’s to the creators.
