VIDEO: OPEN THE DOOR

Diversity and inclusion might just sound like buzzwords and management-speak but
the most successful companies in the world embrace openness. Why? It works. More
diversity means increased perspectives generating greater creativity and more
viable solutions.

The results of a recent McKinsey study showed that the most racially and
ethnically diverse companies were also those most likely to have better than
average financial returns.

A Brief Case Study
Apple doesn’t just say it’s committed to diversity and inclusion; it’s putting
forth the effort to actually do something about it, and openly publishes the
results of its efforts on the company’s diversity and inclusion webpage. Apple
increased hiring of employees from underrepresented groups from roughly ⅕ of new
hires to more than ¼ of new hires from 2014-2016, and increased the percentage
of female new hires by six percentage points over that same time frame.

How to Improve Diversity and Inclusion in Hiring
Meghan M. Biro, CEO of TalentCulture, suggests that Apple’s strategy of openness
can be adopted by any other company or organization in pursuit of the same kind
of success. She boils it down to the following:

A culture of transparency: The company is ready, willing, and able to tell
prospective and current employees about working conditions, pay, opportunities
for advancement, and more. All prospective hires and employees get all of the
information they need to make the best career decisions for themselves.

A commitment to equal pay: People know there’s a gender gap in pay, and they
don’t want to be on the receiving end of it. A company that supports inclusion
and diversity ensures that their pay rates and raises are fair and equal.

A belief that people come first: Openness treats people like people, instead of
only seeing them for the value they give the employer because they can check a
box next to ethnicity that’s other than white. Companies like Apple see the
people behind the quotas, and treat them as such.

An acceptance of nature: Apple and companies with similar mindsets understand
that demographics is diversity. The up and coming generation of employees is the
most diverse in human history no matter how you look at it. Embracing it is
embracing the future.

Watch: Apple is one of the most successful tech companies in the world, and yes,
though they achieved this through their distinctive products and services, they
also got there by embracing the concept of being “open.” In this video clip, get
a glimpse of the dozens of Apple employees who make up its workforce, and gain a
better understanding of how and why the company sees their intrinsic value as
elemental to Apple’s success. Because as much as it’s about the products and
services, it’s about the people who make it possible.

Diverse teams make better decisions, according to a Cloverpop study.

Did you know?

More than three-quarters of executives surveyed believe diversity and inclusion
are competitive advantages, according to Deloitte’s 2017 Global Human Capital
Trends study.
