DOING GOOD IS GOOD FOR YOU

DOING GOOD IS GOOD FOR YOU

Print

It goes without saying that volunteering is good for others, but what if we told
you that doing good is also good for you? It’s true. Giving of your time,
energy, and effort often comes with big returns. Consider these boons of service
as inspired by Habitat by Humanity:

Connection Creation
From finding friends or mentors to the wider connections of belonging to and
supporting a community, being of service to others creates a web of positive
inclusion. When you branch out into your community with the other-centered
intention of service, you strengthen your investment in that community. Bonus?
Empathy. Service helps us better see the roles we all play in each other’s
lives.

Skill Honing
Whether they’re interpersonal soft skills like empathy and relationship
management or hard skills associated with your service of choice, volunteering
has real-life benefits for your personal growth. What better way to sharpen your
carpentry skills than building someone else a house? What better way to boost
your small talk abilities than playing a game of bridge with the elderly?

Health Boosts
What’s good for others is often also good for you, body and mind. As HelpGuide
tells us, volunteering can help you in these ways:

It combats depression.

It increases happiness.

It improves self-confidence.

It provides a sense of purpose.

It helps you stay physically active.

Social Awareness Expansion
It’s common, normal even, to be a bit self-centered in our own lives. After all,
we have to focus on our tasks, needs, goals, ourselves, to manage our lives,
right? But our communities are bigger than that, and volunteering can help us
remember that we might be able to ease someone else’s struggle with a little bit
of giving. It also puts some of our own struggles into perspective.

Finding the right volunteer fit for you can take time and consideration. Start
off by asking yourself some of the questions suggested by HelpGuide, including:
Would you prefer to work with children, adults, or animals? Is remote or
in-person the best fit for you? How much time can you commit? What skills can
you bring as a volunteer? And, finally, what causes are most important to you?
The more connected your heart is, the better you’ll be able to muster up the
energy to be active.

Next Steps: Wondering where to volunteer outside of food banks? Consider these:

community theaters and museums

libraries

senior care centers

service organizations such as the Lions Clubs or Rotary Clubs

animal rescue organizations

youth centers and after-school programs

religious organizations

national parks and conservation organizations
