Akron SUMMIT COUNTY OFFERING REAL ESTATE TAX RELIEF FOR RESIDENTS WHO HAVE SUSTAINED PROPERTY DAMAGE FROM RECENT STORMS * Updated: Aug. 29, 2023, 2:31 p.m.| * Published: Aug. 29, 2023, 2:20 p.m. Summit County residents whose property was damaged by last weekend’s storms have until Dec. 31 to file an application with the Summit County Fiscal Office for real estate tax relief. (David Petkiewicz/cleveland.com)David Petkiewicz, cleveland.com By * Megan Becka, special to cleveland.com AKRON, Ohio – The Summit County Fiscal Office this week announced that real estate tax relief will be available to county residents who have sustained property damage due to last weekend’s storms. The Fiscal Office is taking the required steps to offer property owners the ability to file an Application for Valuation Deduction for Destroyed or Damaged Property (Form DTE 26), pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 319.38. To file an application, download the DTE 26 form via the Fiscal Office website. Residents can also request a form be mailed to them by calling 330-643-2704. The deadline to file an application is Dec. 31, but residents are encouraged to complete the application as soon as possible. Any deduction from property value will affect tax bills mailed in January 2024, according to the Fiscal Office. The amount of your property tax reduction is equivalent to the reduction in value caused by the damage, according to the Fiscal Office. Because the damage is determined based on the quarter of the year during which the damage occurred, the reduction will be 50% in value of the destroyed portion of the property. For example, if your property is appraised at $100,000 by the Fiscal Office and your insurance company specifies that your property sustained $10,000 in damage, you will be entitled to 50% of the reduction of the damage amount ($5,000), which means that your new appraisal value for tax year 2023 will be $95,000. RELATED: Here’s when FirstEnergy says power should be back on in parts of Northeast Ohio As real estate taxes are billed on year in arrears, the reduction will be for tax year 2023, which is collected in 2024, according to the Fiscal Office. Once applications are received, the Fiscal Office will perform inspections to determine the amount of damage. Damage to trees, landscaping and fencing and personal items is excluded. The Fiscal Office monitors repairs based on applications received and building permits filed with townships and cities impacted by the storms. The National Weather Service confirmed nearly a dozen tornado touchdowns in Northeast Ohio following the series of severe storms late last week, and thousands of northern Ohioans remain without power as of Tuesday afternoon.
