IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIME HOMEOWNER OR MAYBE SOMEONE WHO HAS JUST MOVED OUT OF MOM
AND DAD'S HUMBLE ABODE, YOU MAY NOT KNOW A LICK ABOUT PLUMBING, BUT THERE ARE
CERTAIN THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW. THIS ARTICLE WILL DISCUSS SOME OF THEM, AND
YOU WILL BE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE AFTER READING THE TIPS BELOW.

You always want to solder correctly, the biggest mistake most people make when
soldering is failing to get the interior of the fitting and the exterior of the
pipe clean and shiny. Polish these surfaces with a fine emery clot until bright.
When soldering, never heat the pipe, but instead heat the fitting. Doing so
allows the solder to be drawn into the fitting by capillary action. gas fitters
wellington if your pipes freeze! Shut off the water and open the faucet,
enabling it to drain when it thaws. Starting with the faucet, and working your
way to the iced-up area, aim a propane torch or hairdryer at the pipe - this
will quickly defrost it. You could also wrap the pipe in a heating pad or aim a
heat lamp at it, but this will take quite some time. A last resort is to wrap
the pipe in rags and pour boiling water over it. To help you find a good
plumber, you should get recommendations from people whom you trust. Asking a
friend or a neighbor is usually more trustworthy than picking a random plumber
out of the phone book. You need a competent plumber, otherwise you could be in
for a much bigger problem down the road. If you have issues with the plumbing
making a hammering sound when you turn it off, check your water pressure. Any
time your water pressure is above 80 PSI, you will hear extra water noise. This
can be easily solved by the installation of a pressure-reducing valve, which can
be done by most homeowners. Use a hairdryer to thaw frozen pipes, after you shut
off the water to the house. A hairdryer will gently heat the pipe and thaw the
ice without causing significant damage to the pipe. Shutting off the water first
means that if the pipe is broken, there will be no rush of water into the house.
Find a better way to discard of cooking oil instead of pouring it down the drain
where it can easily clog your pipes. Keep a coffee can or other metal container
handy to pour grease into after cooking. Place the can in the freezer to harden
the grease and when it's full, discard it with the trash. Have your pipes in
your plumbing system frozen? You can skip the cost of hiring a plumber by using
this method. First, open the faucet so steam produced by the thawing process can
escape. Begin thawing close to the faucet, and move down the line as each
section thaws out. Use a hair dryer or a heat lamp to warm along the pipe. Even
though this method consumes quite a bit of time, it is safer than most other
heating methods. Furthermore, it requires no cleanup. Do not, under any
circumstances, put lemons down your disposal. Although the lemon smell will give
your disposal a great smell, its acid can corrode the metal parts in it.
Instead, use products that are made specifically for this use. You can purchase
these products at most hardware stores or wherever cleaning products are sold.
Keep an eye on the hoses for your dishwasher and washing machine. These hoses
can leak and bulge, which can be a problem. Check them for signs of wear and
tear and replace any hoses more than 10 years old. You'll find that these hoses
age well, but you have got to make sure they are doing the job they should.
Sometimes kitchen sinks can be clogged up due to a slow accumulation of
solidified grease. One quick fix for this is to try pouring very hot grease down
the sink, which will liquefy the grease clogging the drain and carry it down.
Water won't work, because grease will not dissolve in water. Now that you have
read these plumbing tips, you should feel a little more comfortable about
looking after that scary hardware that lurks in some rooms of your home. Follow
the advice above and you are sure to do the right things when tinkering around
with any of the pipes.
