MEDIA-OUTLET DEFINITION & MEANING

This commercial arm of the BBC also owns UKTV.[2] Channel 4 is similarly
chartered to the BBC, with a remit to provide public service broadcasting and
schools programs, however it runs commercial advertisements to provide a revenue
stream. It produces a number of digital channels, branded as Channel 4, as well
as More4 and Film4. The New York Times is continuing to gauge the pandemic’s
effects on newspapers, magazines and digital media companies through interviews
with executives, newsroom employees and union leaders across the country. All
told, an estimated 37,000 employees of news media companies in the United States
have been laid off, furloughed or had their pay reduced since the arrival of the
coronavirus. To ensure that content moderation decisions by very large online
platforms do not negatively affect media freedom, MEPs call for the creation of
a mechanism to manage content takedown orders. According to MEPs, platforms
should first process declarations to distinguish independent media from
non-independent sources.
CNN (20%) and local television (16%) are the most frequently-named top sources,
with a long list of other news sources named by fewer than one-in-ten. Fox News
(8%) is among the most-named sources in this “long tail,” along with Yahoo News
(7%) and Google News (6%), both of which primarily aggregate and highlight news
produced by other outlets. Among consistent liberals, CNN (15%), NPR (13%),
MSNBC (12%) and the New York Times (10%) all rank near the top of the list. CNN
is named by just 20% of those with mostly liberal views, but still tops their
list, followed by local television (11%) and NPR (9%).
In a press release, journalists expect to see information in a very specific
structure. They’ll quickly scan each release to see if it’s something they—or
their boss—might be interested in covering. Google’s algorithms are not public
and the company has yet to answer why it does not enforce in Turkey the content
quality and anti-disinformation practices that it enforces in other countries
like the U.S. and the UK. While this simple study for Google’s trending search
results in the U.S. provides us with a rather basic insight for a comparative
approach, we collected the Turkey data much more meticulously as described in
the methodology section. The most striking difference in the tree is that it is
much more homophilous.
Between November and December Sky News also saw a jump of 5%, reaching an
audience of 17.8 million. "Starting on February 1, we will not implement
punitive measures immediately. However, we will invest time in informing Serb
citizens" of the ban, Bislimi added. Officials in Kosovo say they will forge
ahead with a controversial decision to restrict all cash transactions anywhere
in the country to euros from February 1, but they will give time for ethnic
Serbs in the country to adjust to the new currency regime. Earlier in the day,
at least four people -- three men and a woman -- were wounded and infrastructure
was damaged in a Russian drone strike on the eastern region of Kharkiv, regional
Governor Oleh Synyehubov said.
As has been the case for much of 2021 most sites among the top 50 saw
year-on-year falls in traffic in December. Year-on-year comparisons are affected
by the surge in interest in digital news during the pandemic and the run-up to
the US election. Of the biggest ten sites in the top 50 by volume of visits,
none saw year-on-year growth in December. The biggest declines among the
household names were recorded by thesun.co.uk (65.1m - down 22%) and
telegraph.co.uk (37.3m visits - down 25%). Although missing the top spot,
Reach-owned titles featured prominently among December's fastest-growing sites
accounting for seven of the ten sites with most visit growth over the year.
MyLondon was the second fastest-growing site in December (9.4m visits - up 41%),
while third fastest-growing was the digital offering of two the publisher's
Scottish titles, The Daily Record and Sunday Mail (14m visits - up 24%).
Half of the top ten newsbrands in the UK saw month-on-month audience growth in
May. Of the four top ten newsbrands that saw a month-on-month fall in audience
(BBC, Mirror, Manchester Evening News and Mail Online) none dropped by over 5%.
The Telegraph website was the fastest-growing top ten newsbrand by audience size
in September, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the UK’s top 50 biggest
names in news. Instead most of the top ten newsbrands saw audience falls, with
three newsbrands recording double-digit month-on-month falls in audience. The
Independent’s audience was down 16% to 19.4 million people, Mail Online’s
audience was down 13% to 21.2 million people and Metro was down 12% to 17.4
million people.

For example, if a news outlet favors a commune based on the area being
right-leaning, for our model this is as telling as another news outlet
disregarding the commune for the same reason. The results show that the behavior
of news outlets is very similar in terms of the discriminating influence of
these three dimensions in the news coverage, at least within this group. Given
that we are analyzing geographic coverage and its relation to socioeconomic and
political factors, we have to take into account the specific characteristics of
Chile. According to a study from 2013 [52], in proportion to its size,
population, and economic development, Chile is the most centralized country in
Latin America. The data obtained from the INE [33] gives us a total estimated
population of 17.9 million people for the entire country, out of which 7.4
million (41%) are located in the Metropolitan Region (where its capital,
Santiago, is located). If we also add that this is the smallest (in area) of the
15 regions that compose Chile, we have a very dense population area.

The company provides news under the brand Fox News Media and a number of local

Media should then be notified of the platform’s intention to delete or restrict
their content alongside a 24-hour window for the media to respond. If after this
period the platform still considers the media content fails to comply with its
terms and conditions, they can proceed with deleting, restricting or referring
the case to national regulators to take the final decision without delay.

News magazines generally go more in-depth into stories than newspapers, trying
to give the reader an understanding of the context surrounding important events,
rather than just the facts. A newspaper is a lightweight and disposable
publication (more specifically, a periodical), usually printed on low-cost paper
called newsprint. It may be general or of special interest, and may be published
daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly. The desk persons
categorise news stories with various formats according to the merit of the
story. Such formats include AVO, AVO Byte, Pkg, VO SOT, VOX POP, and Ancho
Visual.

There were 24.5 million visitors to Mail Online’s website and apps in June, an
increase of 4% year-on-year. June was, however, a slow month for the UK’s
biggest news names as Mail Online was one of only four top ten brands to record
growth. Among the top 50 as a whole, fastest-growing was GB News (audience of
6.6 million, up 545% year-on-year), making it the fastest-growing newsbrand in
the top 50 every month since April when Ipsos began tracking its new .com URL.
While the additional URL means that not all growth will be organic the brand has
nevertheless seen a huge surge in its online audience. While the BBC remained at
the top of the table for audience size (37.9 million visitors), The Sun overtook
Mail Online to resume its place as the UK’s second biggest newsbrand in our
ranking, ending Mail Online’s run of being in second place in May and June.
Unless otherwise noted, these bias ratings are based on online written content,
not TV, radio, or broadcast content. The AllSides Media Bias Chart™ is more
comprehensive in its methodology than any other media bias chart on the Web.
While other media bias charts show you the subjective opinion of just one or a
few people, our ratings are based on multipartisan, scientific analysis,
including expert panels and surveys of thousands of everyday Americans. At the
heart of our company is a global online community, where millions of people and
thousands of political, cultural and commercial organizations engage in a
continuous conversation about their beliefs, behaviours and brands.

By reading only Center outlets, we may still encounter bias and omission of
important issues and perspectives. For this reason, it is important to consume a
balanced news diet across the political spectrum, and to read horizontally
across the bias chart. Learn more about what an AllSides Media Bias Rating™ of
Center rating means here. General-interest newspapers are usually journals of
current news on a variety of topics.
The rest goes to other, smaller pro-government publishers (brown) or neutral
publishers (yellow). Among the Group B outlets, only NTV’s and Haber 7’s
Facebook pages grew in 2020 (2% for each). The greatest fall was at Hürriyet,
which lost more than 85,000 followers in less than one year, shrinking 2.7%. The
world's oldest print newspaper is often attributed to the German-language
Relation aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien (roughly translated as
"relation of all princes and memorable histories"), which was first printed in
1605. Donate one hour’s wage per month or whatever you can afford to build
people-powered media.
There were 18.5 million visitors to the Telegraph site in September, an increase
of 13% month-on-month compared to August. Fastest-growing was Yorkshire Live
(7.4 million visitors, up 56% month-on-month) followed by Chronicle Live (9.1
million, up 37%), Lancs Live (3.4 million, up 24%) and Liverpool Echo (13.1
million, up 19%). ITV’s audience was up 20% year-on-year to 16.5 million, while
the audience to Manchester Evening News grew 10% to reach 16.6 million,
according to data from Ipsos iris. Among the top ten, The Independent saw the
largest fall in audience (20.8 million, down 10% year-on-year). The BBC also led
for average minutes spent with its content per person (246 minutes), while Mail
Online (71 minutes) and ITV (51 minutes) were second and third respectively.
Fellow broadcaster Sky News also grew its digital audience in April with unique
visitors up 9% year-on-year to 17.7 million.
For example, 63% of those who don’t turn to Newsmax for political news say they
don’t know enough about the outlet to decide whether it is part of the
mainstream media or not. Respondents who use an outlet for political news are
more likely to say that outlet is part of the mainstream media than those who
don’t turn to it. For example, 92% of those who got political news from CNN in
the past week consider the cable network part of the mainstream media, compared
with a smaller share of those who didn’t get political news from CNN (82%). The
remaining six outlets in the survey – five of which began as digital entities –
draw different responses from the public, with a plurality or majority of
Americans saying they don’t know enough to decide whether each one is part of
the mainstream media or not.
While areas farther from the city center and mostly rural show the opposite
tendency (see Fig. 1(d)). To build it, we used Poderopedia’s “influence”
database [29] and Wikepedia [30] as our baseline, manually adding other news
outlets in Chile. We enriched the profile of each outlet by adding relevant
information such as geographic location (see Sect. 4.2), scope, Twitter account,
and number of Twitter followers. For example, consistent conservatives not only
trust Fox News at high rates, but also coalesce around it as a source. Fully 84%
of consistent conservatives got news about government and politics from Fox News
in the past week.
The month-on-month performance of the top 50 newsbrands this month is in
contrast with March when over half of the names in the list saw an increase in
traffic. As with the sites in our global and US rankings, this increased
interest in news was likely linked to the Ukraine war and the cost of living
crisis. Both newsbrands grew their audiences by 7% compared to May, with Metro
reaching 19.1 million people while The Independent reached 22.3 million,
according to Ipsos iris.

It has the distinction of being the first television channel in history to serve
24-hour news - a staple feature now of many prominent news outlets and a
cultural phenomenon in its own right. Media outlets are trusted sources of
information for millions worldwide, offering in-depth reports and insightful
commentary on the news that matters the most. Staying informed of the media
landscape is critical, and quality journalism is still needed and relied upon by
many today.
Visits to gbnews.com were up 650% year-on-year as the brand reached an audience
of 6.2 million people in September - although its audience was down from
August’s total of 6.6 million. Liverpool Echo (7.8 million, down 40%), Chronicle
Live (5.5 million, down 39%) and My London (2.9 million, down 48%) - all Reach
newsbrands - saw the biggest year-on-year falls in the top 50. The BBC was once
again at the top of the table for most time spent with its content (9.5 billion
minutes in November), followed by Mail Online (1.5 billion minutes) and The
Guardian (1.1 billion minutes). All three saw slight month-on-month falls with
time spent with their content. Visits to ITV were up 20% year-on-year as the
brand reached an audience of 15.5 million people, while visits to the Daily Mail
were up 17% to 24.9 million, according to data from Ipsos iris.
The outlets were selected to represent a range of audience sizes and sectors.
“Kloop Media is a respected independent voice that strives to provide reporting
about the human rights situation in Kyrgyzstan backed by fact. This attempt by
the Kyrgyz authorities to shut it down is the latest move in a regression on
freedom of expression and the exercising of human rights for citizens of
Kyrgyzstan.
We also measure the explanatory power of each individual dimension on the media
coverage. For this, we calculate the Kendall-Tau (KT) correlation of the
corresponding feature against the number of followers per commune for each news
outlet. The results of these measurements should give information on the
marketing strategy of different outlets. According to the PM and PS models,
direct targeting of specific sectors of the population shape the distribution of
news.
Founded by prolific Silicon Valley investor Jason Calcanis, Inside is a
collection of newsletters focused on delivering the highest quality news on
tech, venture capital and trends in modern business. Press freedom advocates can
also be added to the “undesirable organisation” list. Komanda 29, a coalition of
lawyers and journalists who defend freedom of expression, was declared
“undesirable” shortly after Proekt. Its website was blocked and it was accused
of hosting documents published by an “undesirable” Czech organisation – a charge
it disputes. Proekt dared to publish revelations about President Vladimir
Putin’s third daughter and about property owned by Chechen leader Ramzan
Kadyrov’s third wife.

Publishers should empower journalists to be more active members of their local
communities, too. This can entail attending more events in the community while
on the job or perhaps working out of a local coffee shop some days rather than
in the newsroom. Large news organizations often have a plethora of resources,
from newsgathering teams and producers, to editors, legal counsel and more.
However, what consumers are increasingly drawn to is the individual talent in
the newsroom – journalists they feel they can trust and who hold values in line
with their own. The growth of digital advertising has forced nearly every major
for-profit news website to utilize the most intrusive forms of mass
surveillance, including browsing history and location data — a dynamic
highlighted by the OpenX fine.
The volume of media coverage is the total number of articles published in 2022.
The average engagement per article is the total number of engagements divided by
the total volume of articles. Our research team lists and regularly updates the
top media outlets according to reports released by national auditors. Americans
are more polarized than ever — if you’re like us, you see it in the news and on
your social media feeds every day. The AllSides Media Bias Chart™ shows the
political bias of some of the most-read sources in America. The news media or
news industry are forms of mass media that focus on delivering news to the
general public.
As individuals browse the web, they are greeted by custom advertisements based
on profiles of what data brokers believe to be their shopping habits, interests,
or concerns. VOD, explains Ou Virak, a human rights activist and the Founder and
President of independent Cambodian think tank Future Forum, reaches the masses
and is where the core opposition base accesses their news. It’s notable that the
move to close VOD comes with July’s elections on the horizon. Prior to the 2017
elections, the Cambodia Daily newspaper was shuttered while the Phnom Penh Post
was sold off. ‘All of these factors do seem to be undermining the democratic
process ahead of these elections’, says Green.
It was followed by The Sun (27.9 million visitors, 56% reach) and Mail Online
(24.5 million visitors, 49% reach) which overtook last month’s third biggest
site the Mirror. Both the Mirror and Mail Online however saw slightly fewer
visitors in September compared to August, and as a consequence saw their reach
fall to just below 50%. Audiences spent 9.3 billion minutes with its content in
December - over four times as much as second-best placed Mail Online (2 billion
minutes) and 11 times as much as third-placed ITV (819.6 million minutes). Among
the top 50 as a whole, lifestyle and culture brands performed well for
year-on-year growth, although fastest-growing was Reach regional Nottinghamshire
Live (audience of 5.3 million, up 102% year-on-year). It was followed by Time
Out (4.4 million, up 64%), which closed its print edition last year after 54
years of publication and Glamour UK (3.4 million, up 52%).
Most reporters file information or write their stories electronically from
remote locations. In many cases, breaking stories are written by staff members,
through information collected and submitted by other reporters who are out on
the field gathering information for an event that has just occurred and needs to
be broadcast instantly. Radio and television reporters often compose stories and
report "live" from the scene. Some journalists also interpret the news or offer
opinions and analysis to readers, viewers, or listeners. In a 2021 survey, the
Reuters Institute rated it the most trusted media news brand among
English-speaking online news users in the country. With an audience reach of
over 6 million both in print and digital formats, The Globe and Mail is one of
Canada’s most widely read newspapers, influencing public opinion and discourse
in its native Canada.
The order of the six biggest newsbrands by number of unique visitors remained
unchanged in December compared to the previous month. The BBC commanded the
largest audience during the month, reaching 77% of the UK population. For our
list, we used Ipsos’ ranking of the top online brand groups and selected the 50
biggest that Press Gazette considers to be news or lifestyle sources. The
corporation's website reached 38.3 million people in May (76% of the UK online
population aged over 15). It was followed by Mail Online (reach of 50%), The Sun
(50% reach), the Mirror (47% reach) and The Independent (audience of 20.8
million, 41% reach). The corporation's website and apps reached 37.7 million
people in June and it was the only newsbrand to reach over half of the UK online
population aged over 15 with a 75% reach.
