The Shadows of the Web: Protecting our children in the digital world is a
documentary produced by Blackfisch with support from the Australian Government.
It raises awareness of Australia’s response to the increasing and changing
threat of online child sexual exploitation and abuse in Australia.

IMPACT OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual
 Abuse (Royal
Commission) uncovered the hidden nature, complex causes and significant impacts
of child sexual abuse in institutions in Australia. During the Royal
Commission's private sessions, victims and survivors reported 3 main impacts of
institutional child sexual abuse:

NATIONAL STRATEGY TO PREVENT AND RESPOND TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE 2021-2030

The National Strategy provides a nationally coordinated, strategic framework for
preventing and responding to child sexual abuse. It seeks to reduce the risk,
extent and impact of child sexual abuse and related harms in Australia and
considers child sexual abuse in all settings, including within families, online
and within organisations.

ROYAL COMMISSION

For 5 years, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual
Abuse inquired into how institutions with a responsibility for children managed
and responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse. The Royal
Commission’s 2017 final report made 409 recommendations to improve laws,
policies and practices to prevent and better respond to child sexual abuse.

The practice guide provides evidence-based information and resources to help
shape how workers and organisations respond to victims and survivors of child
sexual abuse of all ages.

The consultation summaries provide a summary of feedback we heard from
government and non-government stakeholders about the design and delivery of a
national point of referral to assist victims, survivors and the community
looking for information and support.
LAUNCH OF STANDARDS FOR SERVICES RESPONDING TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

6 September 2023
We engaged the Australian Centre for Child Protection at the University of South
Australia to develop the national Minimum Practice Standards: Specialist and
Community Support Services Responding to Child Sexual Abuse, which are now
available.
REPORTING ON CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE – GUIDANCE FOR MEDIA AND VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS

We commissioned the University of Canberra News and Media Research Centre to
develop evidence‑based media guides to encourage responsible reporting on child
sexual abuse and support victims and survivors engaging with the media.
