Parodie pour marionnettes, en bruxellois français. C’est en collaboration avec Auguste Maquet qu’Alexandre Dumas écrit "Les Trois Mousquetaires". Ils ont pour nom Athos, Pothos et Aramis (tous ont existé mais n’étaient pas de la même génération) et sont au service de Louis XIII. Arrivé de sa Gascogne natale sur un bidet jaune de robe, avec une lettre de recommandation de son gentilhomme de père pour M. de Tréville, capitaine des gardes, à Paris, d’Artagnan doit gagner sa belle casaque de mousquetaires. Il commencera par se battre en duel avec ceux qui deviendront ses inséparables amis. L’amour que d’Artagnan porte à Constance Bonacieux (Constanske chez Toone), fidèle femme de chambre d’Anne d’Autriche, le lance dans l’aventure dite des "Ferrets de la Reine" : douze ferrets de diamants, présents du roi, que la reine a offerts à Buckingham. A l’instigation du cardinal de Richelieu qui veut perdre la reine, Louis XIII somme son épouse de les porter au prochain bal de la cour. Ces ferrets sont en réalité des bouts métalliques qui terminent des rubans. Dans le cas de la reine de France, ces ferrets sont ornés de diamants. Pour les commodités de la scène et aussi par confusion de récits, ces ferrets se transforment chez les Toone du passé en collier de la reine. Cet épisode naît probablement d’un autre roman de Dumas : "Le Collier de la Reine" qui trouve sa source dans l’Affaire du collier de 1785-1786, scandale qui éclata en France à la fin de l’Ancien Régime, à la suite d’une escroquerie montée par la comtesse de la Motte aidée de Cagliostro. Ces derniers convainquirent le cardinal de Rohan d’acheter pour la reine un collier qu’il ne put jamais rembourser. Cette affaire compromit la reine Marie-Antoinette qui était pourtant innocente. Confusion dans les récits, anachronisme font partie du quotidien des Toone. Ils ne s’embarrassent guère de détails. Comme disait Molière : "L’important, c’est de plaire !" De nos jours encore, Toone respecte les anachronismes de ses prédécesseurs.
