TELECOUPLED IMPACTS, FEEDBACKS, AND SPILLOVERS OF INTERNATIONAL AND
TRANSNATIONAL POLICIES

DECEMBER 5, 2024

During a talk at the OSM, GLP's Telecoupling Working Group explored how the
telecoupling framework can be used to scrutinize the effectiveness of
international and transnational policies. In a new blog post, they integrate
insights from four case studies to more deeply understand these telecoupled
dynamics and identify strategies to address telecoupled impacts, feedbacks, and
spillovers.   Read full post

FEATURED SCIENTIST: DR. JOSS LYONS-WHITE

Postdoctoral Researcher
University of Cambridge

I am an interdisciplinary land systems scientist in the Conservation &
Development Lab at Cambridge University in the UK. My work involves applying
qualitative and quantitative methods to understand how public and private
policies can reduce deforestation while improving—or at least not
harming—smallholder farmers’ livelihoods. I’m particularly interested in
policies to reduce deforestation in commodity supply chains, like companies’
commitments to “zero deforestation.” I apply a range of methods including
systems thinking, expert elicitation, Global Value Chain analysis, behavioural
psychology, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Right now, I’m excited
about an RCT that our group has been working on since 2022 in Sumatra,
Indonesia. We’re teaching more than 1500 palm oil farmers about zero
deforestation practices. It’s a huge challenge, but farmers are really engaged
with the training. We have high hopes about producing a lasting impact.

One topic I’m especially interested in, which is not so widely studied in the
land systems science community, is the impact of private conservation policies
in highly forested, low-income countries like Liberia. Liberia is home to nearly
half of the remaining Upper Guinean forest, but it has received relatively
little research attention compared to neighbouring countries like Côte d’Ivoire
and Ghana. My research in Liberia has sought to unravel the complex
relationships between national development policies, forest conservation, and
local peoples’ aspirations. Targeting more land systems research to such places
could help us understand how outsized benefits for conservation might be
achieved, given the large areas of forest still remaining. But it is also
essential to ensure policies deliver equity for smallholder farmers, who have
often been excluded from policy processes.
