How Can You Tell If Your Job Offer Is a "Catfish"?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your interviewer used words like "rewarding work, exceptional culture, and
flexible schedule" but didn't give any concrete details about your duties or
responsibilities. The company website shows employees with blissful smiles
drinking high-quality coffee and working with cutting-edge tech, but your
interviewer had a blank screen in the Zoom background.

Something seems off.

The last thing you want to do is accept a too-good-to-be-true job offer and get
stuck in a job you hate--or quit immediately and create a difficult-to-explain
entry on your resume.

What can you do if you think you're being "catfished" by a less than appealing
job offer or employer? Use these tips to read between the lines to make sure
your job offer is what it seems:

Get the details. Ask for your job description in writing and be wary of an
employer who claims they'll explain your duties once you start work.

Check references. Employers aren't the only ones who need to verify data. Get in
touch with former or current employees and find out what it's really like to
work at the company.

Ask for a tour. If possible, visit the work site. See where you'll work, meet
your co-workers, and learn more about your duties.

Ask questions. Verify salary, schedule, benefits, and anything else you feel is
relevant. Consider asking about turnover rates and why the last person left the
position. If your potential employer ducks any of your questions, consider
moving on to the next opportunity. You know what they say: if it seems too good
to be true...it probably is.

Partner with an expert. Work with PrideStaff to find jobs that are exactly as
advertised--or better. Our recruiters have deep roots in the local community and
have established relationships with leading employers. We'll help you gain
access to exclusive opportunities, working with well-known and respected
companies. No catfishing allowed! Contact your local PrideStaff office to find a
better job today.
