As our country grapples with the deeply felt consequences of and anger at the killing of Mr. George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers, it’s understandable that some may be overwhelmed and perhaps even deflated or discouraged. Mary and I have felt that way several times in just the past few days. Yet, I am uplifted and inspired when I reflect on the actions many of you have taken, or commitments you have made, since I last wrote to you on</span><a href="http://www.fresnostatenews.com/2020/05/30/statement-by-president-joseph-i-castro-speaking-out-in-support-of-our-african-american-community/"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Saturday, May 30</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last Sunday, student leaders of the campus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) organized and led a peaceful protest in downtown Fresno in which thousands of people participated, while adhering to public-health protocols in light of COVID-19. I was deeply impressed by the wisdom and strength this action demonstrated. Our students seized the moment to speak to power in a moving way that caught the attention of our entire region — including public officials and civic leaders — while also ensuring that the event wasn’t hijacked as similar protests throughout the country have been. Many of their classmates, faculty, staff and administrators joined our student leaders by participating in the demonstration. We were all moved by the message and calls for change and for justice. I, for one, intend to carry that momentum forward to examine what I can do on a personal level, as well as what I can do as your president.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our faculty and staff also continue their impactful work. For example, based on recent feedback received from faculty and staff, particularly those of color, new support and advocacy groups are being formed to provide safe spaces to discuss concerns and for those who are looking for ways to support social justice. Below is a sampling of groups that you may be interested in joining. I think they would agree that if I were to summarize our conversation briefly, it would be: Let’s build on the good work of our partners — especially our colleagues who have been at this for many years — and on the energy and talents of our students. We must rededicate ourselves to </span><a href="http://www.fresnostatenews.com/2020/05/30/statement-by-president-joseph-i-castro-speaking-out-in-support-of-our-african-american-community/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">strengthening existing programs</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and to initiating new ones, and above all, to take a stand against hate, in the classroom where our students need to feel safe to learn and perform at their best, and in the workplace where our black faculty and staff contribute to the success of our students.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yesterday, I met with student leaders of the campus chapter of the NAACP to discuss strategies to increase the recruitment and retention of African American students on our campus. One strategy will consist of establishing a stronger connection between African American students, faculty and staff at Fresno State and Fresno City College. We committed to working on this and other action-oriented strategies in the days ahead. I will ask many of our talented faculty and students to assist in developing these strategies.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite the challenges we face, I am inspired by the immortal words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: “The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” Let’s work together to ensure that this will be the case on our campus and throughout our nation. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My thanks to you who have championed diversity and inclusion on our campus and in our community for years. You are heroes. Please keep up your efforts, even if they make some uncomfortable. Those issues were at the core of initial research that led him to Fresno State to [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Plant science graduate Hardeep Singh hails from the Indian village of Dalieawali, and even though it is over 7,770 miles away from the Central Valley, it faces similar agricultural issues like water scarcity and increased soil and water salinity.</p> <p>Those issues were at the core of initial research that led him to Fresno State to pursue his master’s degree, but external factors forced him to shift to a new project that used smart LED lights to stimulate vegetative growth in citrus nursery plants.</p> <p>Faculty were so impressed by his promising results and ability to switch focus that he was awarded the <a href="http://www.fresnostatenews.com/2020/04/29/fresno-state-2020-deans-graduate-medalists-announced/">Dean’s Graduate Medalist</a>, the highest honor for a student in the <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/">Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology</a>.</p> <div class="video-shortcode"><iframe title="embedded resource from https://www.youtube.com/embed/LmHZ3HuyS1w?feature=oembed" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LmHZ3HuyS1w?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen alt="embedded resource from https://www.youtube.com/embed/LmHZ3HuyS1w?feature=oembed">embedded resource from https://www.youtube.com/embed/LmHZ3HuyS1w?feature=oembed</iframe></div> <p>“Our research showed we can potentially increase the development of young trees before they are planted in the spring,” Singh said. “We were able to fine-tune the LED wavelengths to simulate sunlight and account for the relative humidity and temperature in our growth chambers. The main goal was to lengthen their growing patterns when normally they would be decreasing in the fall because of the limited hours of natural sunlight.”</p> <p>Singh will submit his findings to two research publications and has made oral presentations at professional conferences in Fresno and Las Vegas.</p> <p>He worked on the study under plant science faculty <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/plantsci/faculty-staff/g-brar.html">Dr. Gurreet Brar</a>, who is originally from Muktsar, India, located 60 miles from Singh’s home village, and who joined the faculty in 2016.</p> <p>Both received their undergraduate degrees from <a href="https://www.pau.edu/">Punjab Agricultural University</a> in Ludhiana. The country’s renowned agricultural institution is also tied to Fresno State through an <a href="http://www.fresnostatenews.com/2019/11/08/fresno-state-to-sign-agreement-of-collaboration-with-punjab-agricultural-university/">agreement of collaboration</a> signed in November 2019 to exchange resources and expertise.</p> <p>“I am lucky to have the chance to work with Dr. Brar,” Singh said. “He has a really wide area of expertise, and I wouldn’t have learned what I have anywhere else. It’s amazing to have such close access to all these orchards and nursery on our campus farm and to our labs.”</p> <p>The partnership has also introduced Singh to other research that Brar conducts with students to target issues in many of the most profitable commodities in the nation’s leading agricultural area.</p> <p>“I had never seen up close how almonds, nut or citrus crops are grown,” Singh said. “Where I’m from, we often have small-scale monoculture farming focused on rice and wheat, so the diversity here was a great chance to learn.”</p> <p>He said the local Indian campus community and Sikh community have also made him feel at home, as have local cricket and soccer tournaments and the warm summer weather.</p> <p>The first-generation college graduate will now likely set his sights on a doctoral degree. That research could include a return to his initial themes of sustainability and addressing drought and salinity issues that affect many parts of the world.</p> <p>In the meantime, his family can take extra pride in the added degree for the first-generation college graduate, especially since his home district of Mansa has the lowest literacy rate among the 22 Punjab districts.</p> <p>“I started working in agriculture at an early age with my father,” Singh said, “so I’ve had a lifelong connection. He ended his career [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bob Bennett, Fresno State baseball’s winningest coach, passed away on Sunday, May 31, at the age of 86.</p> <p>Completing a 34-year head coaching career at Fresno State in 2002, Bennett racked up 1,302 career wins at Fresno State as he became the seventh coach in NCAA history to reach 1,300 wins. He ended his career with 26 consecutive winning seasons.</p> <p>Making trips to Omaha for the College World Series in both 1988 and 1991, Bennett’s 1988 club won a program-record 56 games and went on a program-best 32-game winning streak.</p> <p>“Our prayers go out to the Bennett family,” current Fresno State coach Mike Batesole<em> </em>said. “Rest in peace to the greatest coach our Valley will ever see, [his] name on the stadium says it all.”</p> <p>A charter member of the Bulldog Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 as well as a member of both the College Baseball Hall of Fame and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Bennett led the Diamond ‘Dogs to 17 conference championships, 21 NCAA tournament appearances and two trips to the College World Series. Bennett coached 32 All-Americans and nine first-round Major League Baseball selections while being named a conference coach of the year 14 times in five different conferences.</p> <p>“Coach Bennett is a legend in college baseball, and I have never met anyone who loved the game more,” said Paul Loeffler, the voice of the Bulldog baseball team. “He never stopped giving or teaching. The legacy his amazing family and the men who played for him represent will be a credit to Fresno State and the Valley forever.”</p> <p>As a student-athlete at Fresno State from 1952 to 1955 for legendary coach Pete Beiden, Bennett earned a pair of CCAA all-conference honors as a catcher in 1954 and 1955 as the Bulldogs won conference titles each season.</p> <p>On May 7, 2016, Pete Beiden Field officially became Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium as the stadium was dedicated in his name in a pregame on-field ceremony.</p> <p>“Bob Bennett’s transformative impact on Fresno State and Bulldog baseball will be felt for generations to come,” said Fresno State director of athletics Terry Tumey. “His memory will always live on inside Bob Bennett Stadium. It is my responsibility as your university President to speak out. What happened to Mr. Floyd — an unarmed Black man, a father, a son, a beloved member of his community — and to many before him, is tragic, inhumane and downright reprehensible. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends, as well as to my many African American friends, colleagues, students and community partners who are experiencing the recurring sense of pain, loss and anger that is rooted in our nation’s history of racism and injustice.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In times like these, it is critical that we collectively redouble our efforts to address the challenges our African American friends and neighbors are facing in our Valley and across the nation. While we may at times feel despair at the frequency of such tragic events, and while we might struggle with how to successfully address racism, I am certain that we can begin by being compassionate, supportive and fully inclusive in our programs and in our actions. Mercado-López, a professor in the <a href="http://www.fresnostate.edu/socialsciences/womensstudies/">Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies</a>, nominated Fresno State for the honor.</p> <p>“I thought it was important to nominate Fresno State because these past few years our leaders have actively elevated their recognition of parents on campus,” said Mercado-López, who was a student-parent herself before becoming a faculty member at Fresno State in 2013. “As a faculty parent myself, I’ve benefited from the family-friendly campus climate that makes my children feel welcome on campus and that allows me to bring my whole self as a mother and scholar to my job. I think this is especially important for women scholars who have not always felt recognized and valued as mothers in the academy. First day totals included 21,038 ears of yellow corn and 13,483 [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Customers came out again in large numbers to buy 34,521 ears of Fresno State sweet corn on <strong>Monday, May 25</strong>, the first day the popular product was available this year at the <a href="https://www.fresnostate.edu/agf/farmmarket/">Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market</a> (5368 N. Chestnut Ave.) on campus. First day totals included 21,038 ears of yellow corn and 13,483 ears of white corn. Each ear cost 50 cents per ear when bought individually.</p> <p>More than 320 customers were in line when the store opened at 8 a.m., but the wait was barely over an hour at most thanks to a new outdoor shopping system for those only wanting to buy corn. The temporary outdoor mobile station also sold nearly 1,800 bags of pre-bagged ears that included 10 ears of yellow corn for $7. Corn was also sold inside the market with other student-made products from the <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/agf/farmlab/">University Agricultural Laboratory</a>.</p> <p>Per government shopping guidelines, customers were asked to shop by themselves; wear face masks; use hand sanitizer stations; and not put corn back in bins or shuck or peel. Social distancing and extra employee sanitation measures were used both inside and outside the store, and a decreased number of shoppers were allowed in the store at a time.</p> <p>The market will continue to be open seven days a week through the Fourth of July holiday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds from the Gibson Farm Market support <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/plantsci/faculty-staff/g-brar.html">Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology</a> students and programs. De Censi, who turned 60 in April, received his bachelor’s degree in enology this month, after balancing [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When local flight instructor Paolo De Censi is flying over the Central Valley, it gives him a chance to glance over at the Fresno State vineyard and winery that have fueled his other passion the past four years.</p> <p>De Censi, who turned 60 in April, received his <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/ve/index.html">bachelor’s degree in enology</a> this month, after balancing a full-time class schedule with a 20-hour-a-week teaching load at <a href="https://www.jbaeronautics.com/">JB Aeronautics</a>, based out of the <a href="https://flyfresno.com/">Fresno Yosemite International Airport</a>.</p> <p>That career started almost 30 years ago when he took his first aviation class in 1992 in Daytona Beach, Florida.</p> <p>“I wasn’t one of those kids that always dreamed of flying,” De Censi said. “In my 20s, a friend who had his license got me into it a little while I was working as a computer programmer. When I realized that many co-workers were much better than I at it, I decided to find a profession that was fun and started saving up to take flying lessons, and I’ve never gone back.”</p> <p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-60608" src="http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2-300x173.jpg" alt="Paolo De Censi" width="300" height="173" srcset="http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2-150x86.jpg 150w, http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2-200x115.jpg 200w, http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2-300x173.jpg 300w, http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2-400x230.jpg 400w, http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2-600x346.jpg 600w, http://www.fresnostatenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Paolo2.jpg 729w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />His interest in winemaking started at an early age with his grandfathers who grew grapes and made wine in northern Italy in the Piedmont and Lombardy areas near Milan where he grew up.</p> <p>“Wine is such an important part of the Italian culture in so many ways,” De Censi said. “All of our family helped out at harvest, and those experiences bound us together. I still remember when my grandfather offered me my first taste when I was a kid.”</p> <p>Agriculture emerged on his professional radar after a biology professor recommended it as a career option while he was a student at <a href="http://www.piercecollege.edu/">Los Angeles Pierce College</a>. He later graduated with an associate’s degree in agriculture from the Woodland Hills institution in 2013.</p> <p>Prior to that, he had received an associate of science degree in aviation maintenance from <a href="http://www.wlac.edu/">West Los Angeles College</a> in 2008.</p> <p>“I guess you could say classes have become an addiction,” De Censi said. “After I lost my job as a flight instructor in Italy (in 2004), I came back to the U.S. via a student visa, and I had to keep taking classes to renew my visa. I needed to take 12 units each semester and work, so it was like a puzzle which classes would fit into a schedule for me to do both.”</p> <p>Being a student for so long has also given him the chance to expand his horizons in other ways.</p> <p>He speaks Spanish fluently, dabbles in French and has a wide spectrum of academic interests. A smattering of the topics of his Fresno State classes include Chinese, deaf culture, dinosaurs, energy conversion, Latin American studies, massage, Pilates, planet Earth, pop music, violent weather and yoga.</p> <p>He has excelled in them with a 3.78 GPA, and he was nominated for the Dean’s Medal for the <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/">Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology</a>.</p> <p>What’s next for the budding winemaker?</p> <p>Possibly a master’s degree with the same Fresno State enology program to add research and production experience at the award-winning <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/agf/winery/">campus winery</a> that is regarded as the nation’s best.</p> <p>“I’ve been so busy with both areas that I haven’t had as much time to improve my hands-on winemaking skills,” De Censi said. “It’s like when you start to get your private pilot’s license, they say you’re at a 0 level. I feel like that’s where I’m at, but the winery here is such a great place to learn.”</p> <p>After that, he knows opportunities will open up with his Fresno State degree and training.</p> <p>He would consider working at wineries in Central California or throughout the state, and the only caveat is that he would like an airport nearby. He would also consider a return to Italy, and especially enticing would be <a href="https://www.cinqueterre.eu.com/en/">Cinque Terre</a>, a string of five towns and villages on the northwest coast.</p> <p>“It would be nice to go back there and work,” DeCensi said. “It’s so beautiful, and the wine is great. However, it’s not easy to work in the vineyards there because of the steep slopes and terraces. I try not to have any long-term goals, because they never work out. Now “more and more what we’re looking at is being ‘on’ 24/7 in all aspects of your life.”</p> <p>These days, the line between personal and professional worlds is increasingly blurred as communication technology becomes more sophisticated and commonplace. That’s especially true now as the COVID-19 pandemic forces more people to work at home.</p> <p>Olson-Buchanan specializes in research that explores how workers using technology react and set boundaries to manage well-being and minimize work-life conflicts. She’s published a variety of studies and articles and currently is a research collaborator on a Norwegian grant focused on the subject during shelter-in-place restrictions.</p> <p>It’s fertile ground for research as employees — many of whom have never worked at home — adjust to the times. Yet long before the pandemic upset the balance, Olson-Buchanan was tracking the evolution and its repercussions.</p> <p>“This is a change in society, but also a change for individuals who previously left their workplace and it (work) all stayed there,” Olson-Buchanan said. “Maybe they would think about things, maybe they would ruminate on things or maybe they would bring reports to read at home.</p> <blockquote><p>“But now, it’s so much more accessible — even outside of sheltering-in-place — where you can access your email on your phone, you can be called and you can be texted in both directions.”</p></blockquote> <p>Reactions to this dynamic may depend on how much workers separate or integrate their two worlds. For example, “segmenters” prefer to draw a distinct line between work and personal lives and can react strongly to interruptions.</p> <p>“Integrators” see time as more multi-purpose and have less difficulty moving between worlds, Olson-Buchanan said. Yet both types of individuals can struggle to balance work and personal life in the era of an electronic leash.</p> <blockquote><p>“I think what we see more than ever is an increased expectation that people will be available during off-hours,” she said. “That is most worrisome because there’s quite a bit of research that suggests we need to disconnect from work — if we don’t, we do not recover from work and when we don’t recover then we are less productive.”</p></blockquote> <p>In fact, early research suggested that using communication technology to work during off hours took a greater toll than simply working the same number of hours at the office — and then disconnecting at home, she said. The bottom line is that boundaries, and recovery time, are critical to the work-life balance.</p> <p>“We do better when we’re rested and when we have time away from work,” Olson-Buchanan said. “Boundaries around technology help us to do that.”</p> <p>The situation is more complex today as many people work at home. Stories about Zoom photo bombs, doorbell interruptions and other surprises are pretty common — even at Olson-Buchanan’s house. For example, her husband was playing Bob Dylan one day while her daughter was giving an online presentation “that was not about Bob Dylan,” Olson-Buchanan said.</p> <p>Balancing those two worlds at home can be challenging, so it’s important to be kind, she said. “And really be present wherever you are.”</p> <p>Tips for working remotely (especially in the current climate):</p> <ol> <li><strong>Set boundaries between work and non-work in both time and space.</strong> Whether it’s an office or a corner of the dining room table, designate a space for work along with specific work hours. Then honor those boundaries.</li> <li><strong>Maintain a routine. </strong>If you generally get up, have breakfast and dress a certain way for work, continue that routine. That makes it easier to see the distinction between work and personal time.</li> <li><strong>Consider transition time.</strong> Your commute provides time to transition to the work day (and then back home). Chestnut Ave.) is creating new measures to encourage customer safety when Fresno State’s renowned campus-grown sweet corn goes on sale at <strong>8 a.m</strong>. <strong>Monday, May 25</strong>.</p> <p>Following government health standards related to the COVID-19 pandemic, sweet corn will initially be sold both inside and outside the store to encourage social distancing practices.</p> <p>“We’re excited to have our sweet corn available to the public again this year,” said Jeremy Lewis, Gibson Farm Market manager. “We understand that this year will be a little different with wait times, sanitation practices and customer requirements compared to past years. We ask that everyone be patient with our new processes, and be confident that we are following all required social distancing guidelines.”</p> <p>A new outside mobile purchase station, on the north side of the store, will accommodate shoppers who want to only purchase corn. Pre-bagged corn in quantities of 10 ears will be available outside for $7 to accommodate crowds while supplies last.</p> <p>Shoppers who want to purchase the market’s wide variety of Fresno State student-made products will be allowed inside in smaller increments, and corn will be sold inside, too.</p> <p>Other new measures include:</p> <ul> <li>Only one customer will be allowed to shop per bin at a time.</li> <li>Customers are asked to wear face masks while shopping, indoors or outside, per government guidelines.</li> <li>Customers are required to use sanitizer stations before they can pick corn out of bins at either location, and are asked not to shuck or peel back the corn, or put corn back in bins.</li> <li>Shoppers who want to purchase the market’s wide variety of Fresno State student-made products will be allowed inside in smaller increments in relation to government ordinances. Corn will be sold inside, too.</li> <li>The store requests that only one member per family shop at a time to help shorten wait times.</li> <li>Organized waiting lines for shopping will be staged outside the store in wrap-around fashion as in the past, but with more predetermined spacing to facilitate social distancing and customer safety.</li> <li>Student workers continue to sanitize the store every two hours and wear face masks. Plexiglas sneeze guards have also been installed at each cash register.</li> </ul> <p>To encourage customers to stagger their shopping, the market will begin to operate a seven-day summer schedule starting Monday, May 25, and will be open each day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the Fourth of July holiday.</p> <p>Yellow corn will be available opening day, and white corn will be available in early June.</p> <p>A similar supply of corn is expected throughout the summer compared to past years. Approximately 70 acres of the 1,000-acre <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/agf/farmlab/">University Agricultural Laboratory</a> are devoted to its most popular product grown by student workers and staff.</p> <p>To encourage the freshest products possible, corn is picked and delivered every morning. The market thanks its customers who understand that supplies can vary at times due to changes in weather and labor availability.</p> <p>Customers can also enjoy a mix of campus produce that currently includes cherries, grapefruit, peaches, squash, strawberries and zucchini. Apricots, peppers, plums, nectarines and tomatoes will likely arrive in early June, and other commodities like table grapes will follow in July.</p> <p>The <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/agf/dairyprocessing/">campus creamery</a> will also sell half gallons of whole milk, and will also have whole chocolate milk available later in the summer.</p> <p>The market has a May special honoring National Wine Month with nine <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/agf/winery/">Fresno State Winery</a> favorites that will be 20% off. Wines on sale through May 31 include Albariño, California Syrah, Chardonnay, Malbec, Muscat Canelli, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Syrah Rosé, and Toca Zinfandel.</p> <p>Popular <a href="http://www.fresnostate.edu/jcast/asae/facilities/meatlab.html">meat products</a> at the market include over 30 varieties of sausages, dried artisan-style salami and snack products, as well as popular meat cuts.
