CREATING A RADICAL STEP-CHANGE IN THE CONTRIBUTION OF CITIZEN SCIENCE &
COMMUNITY MONITORING TO EVIDENCE-BASED INTEGRATED CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT.

The Catchment Monitoring Cooperative (CMC) will close the gap that exists
between local communities, data on their river catchments, and decisions that
affect their rivers. Our goal is to diversify and democratise data, helping to
inform better decision making when it comes to protecting and improving rivers.

OUR MISSION

Rivers are suffering. People are frustrated with poor regulation and have lost
trust in water companies. We want healthy rivers that can be used safely by more
people to have fun, relax and get in touch with nature.

THE PROBLEM

At present, data collected by citizens and community groups isn’t necessarily
scientifically robust. This isn't the fault of the citizen scientists
themselves, but the result of no nationally-available structure. As a result,
the hard work of volunteers might not be taken seriously when informing the
debate about how to revive our rivers.

THE SOLUTION

By generating a wealth of reliable, citizen-led data, it becomes possible to
hold polluters to account. This work is a critical foundation for improving
transparency and relationships across river catchments - including eNGOs, local
communities, water companies and more. It will build our understanding of the
problems we face, and help us to gauge whether solutions are actually working.
It is an essential building block to healthier rivers.

HOW CAN WE GET THERE?

To deliver the radical change that is needed, we need to develop:

STANDARDISED METHODS

We need to develop standardised methods and joined up data platforms.

TRAINING & SUPPORT

Provide training and technical support programmes to lower the barrier to entry
and enable groups to collect relevant and quality data.

EFFECTIVE USE OF DATA

Commitment from scientists, government and partners to use citizen science and
community monitoring data to improve the environment.

SUSTAINABLE FUNDING

Funding to support national coordination and to make local community monitoring
and citizen science programmes sustainable.

SUPPORTERS

Supported by the WaterCo-Governance (WaterCoG) project under the Interreg North
Sea Region VB programme, funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
