This town’s harbour is filled with boats the way parking lots are filled with
cars everywhere else. You must travel by ship, plane or possibly dogsled. There
is no way to travel across Greenland on land. It gives you insight into life in
the Arctic. If you want to add an interesting World Heritage Site to your list,
the Ilulissat Icefjord is probably the most unique one you will ever see.
Researchers have been studying it for over 200 years and it is an important area
to study the affects of Global Warming. We have visited some and wondered why
they had been named so, but the Ilullisat Icefjord in Greenland is one of those
places that truly deserves the honour.

There seems to be a new UNESCO World Heritage Site popping up at every turn.
Ilulissat Icefjordīeauty at every turn in the Unesco World Heritage Sit of
Ilulissat Fjord It is believed that the iceberg that sank the Titanic most
likely was born here. Some icebergs don’t melt away until they are farther South
than New York City. When the icebergs do break free, they flow North with the
current to the Arctic Ocean before joining the Atlantic Ocean and heading South.
We stayed at a high vantage point to look at the bay. They have have a short
window to melt before winter freezes them in and then they will possibly roll a
few times before they finally work their way out to sea.Īn iceberg rolling is so
dangerous that you are not allowed to go anywhere near the coast.Īnother 90%
sits below and if one rolls, it creates a tsunami that will take out anything in
it’s path. It can take years for a large iceberg to break free. Some icebergs
are so large, like the one we witnessed, that they sit on the bottom of the bay
and are trapped until some of their ice is melted off allowing them to drift
north through the Arctic Ocean. The glacier flows from Greenland’s polar icecap
and ends at the Ilulissat Icefjord where giant chunks of ice break off from the
glacier (known as calving) and fall into the sea. Ilulissat is home to the
Jakobshavn Isbræ glacier, it moves at a rate of 20–35 m (66–115 ft) per day
creating some 35-billion tonnes of icebergs every year. The Greenlandic Flag
sits motionless on a Glacial Background It truly was unlike anything we had ever
seen. I could have stood looking at that view for hours. It’s beautiful blue
white jagged edges towered over the long flat field of colourful moss. Jutting
up from the sea was an enormous iceberg (larger than an 10 story apartment
building). Icebergs and GlaciersĪfter about 15-minutes of walking, it hit us –
one of the most spectacular views on earth. It could have been middle earth, but
instead we were at the top of the world. Surrounded by hills on either side, we
walked through a long valley that reminded us of parts of the Tongariro crossing
in New Zealand. The soil seemed almost springy with moss, but we know that there
is only a few inches of nutrients before hitting the rocky ground underneath. In
Ilulissat, we were above the tree line and nothing we saw grew over a foot. We
were told that they flower in the Spring creating an entirely different
colourful landscape and we made a note to come back up here one day in the
Spring.

HELMUT NEWTON FAMOUS PHOTOS

After the war in 1945, he became a British subject and changed his name to
Newton in 1946. In August 1942, Newton enlisted with the Australian Army and
worked as a truck driver. He was released from internment in 1942 and briefly
worked as a fruit picker in Northern Victoria. Internees travelled to the camp
at Tatura by train under armed guard. Newton was interned by British authorities
while in Singapore and was sent to Australia on board the Queen Mary, arriving
in Sydney on 27 September 1940. After arriving in Singapore, Newton found he was
able to remain there, first briefly as a photographer for the Straits Times and
then as a portrait photographer. At Trieste, he boarded the Conte Rosso (along
with about 200 others escaping the Nazis), intending to journey to China. Newton
was issued with a passport just after turning 18 and left Germany on 5 December
1938.

The increasingly oppressive restrictions placed on Jews by the Nuremberg laws
meant that his father lost control of the factory in which he manufactured
buttons and buckles he was briefly interned in a concentration camp on
Kristallnacht, 9 November 1938, which finally compelled the family to leave
Germany. Interested in photography from the age of 12 when he purchased his
first camera, he worked for the German photographer Yva (Elsie Neuländer Simon)
from 1936. Newton attended the Heinrich-von-Treitschke- Realgymnasium and the
American School in Berlin. Newton was born in Berlin, the son of Klara "Claire"
(née Marquis) and Max Neustädter, a button factory owner. After his emigration
in 1938 he became known as HELMUT NEWTON, one of the most famous photographers
worldwide."

Translation: "At this spot used to stand the birthhouse of HELMUT NEUSTÄDTER

later, he changed his name to Newton and embarked upon the photography career
that would make his name.Plaque at his birthhouse in Schöneberg, Berlin. The
photographer, son of a factory owner, was of Jewish heritage and in 1938 was
forced to flee the Nazis before the First World War. German-born Newton, neé
Neustädter, died as a result of a car accident in Los Angeles in 2004 when he
was aged 84.

Critics denounced him for reducing female sexuality to naked bodies and for
voyeuristically exhibiting women's intimacy, but Newton always insisted that he
adored women and that his photographs portrayed female power and strength. Woman
into Man (left), which was shot for Vogue, in 1979, is a distinctive Newton
picture mixing themes of power, sex and luxury Newton's book World Without Men
was released after his death and had the picture Model in Fur with Bear on the
coverīorn into a Jewish family in Berlin in 1920, Helmut Newton was a 'prolific,
widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged
black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications',
according to the New York Times.Ĭontroversy has routinely followed Newton's
photography. In another shot, she and Lisa Taylor, a top model of the era,
wrestle on the beach, with Lisa grabbing Jerry's hair as the pair show off their
bodies in high-cut swimsuits.Ī portrait of Charlotte Rampling captures the
photographer's frequent muse looking sultry in a close-up portrait, that shows
off her distinctive bone structure and smouldering eyes.

In Swimwear (Jerry Hall spitting) from 1978, the Texan model directs a jet of
water at another model's breasts. Newton's work spanned decades but he made his
most recognisable work with sado-masochistic undertones in the Seventies, when
he photographed the biggest models of the day showcasing the top designers'
clothes for top magazines, creating pictures that were erotic and subversive,
with fetishistic subtexts.Īll-American beauty Jerry Hall was a regular subject,
where her athletic physique fitted his aesthetic and preference for Amazonian
beauties. He used his observations to compose a witty subversive shoot in which
a model clad in a tuxedo jacket, black bra and stockings and suspenders sat
astride a saddle on the back of an armchair In 1976, Newton shot Saddle II in
Paris, inspired by the luxury products on display in Hermes that juxtaposed
handbags, silk scarves and accessories with bridles and leather goods.

BROWN BETTY BOOP GOOD MORNING

It’s this premise that gave The Fairly Oddparents its fun, lighthearted style in
each of its 172 episodes. The fairy godparents of 10-year-old Timmy Turner,
Cosmo and Wanda have the power to grant his every wish, which always inevitably
goes wrong. The wacky, impulsive Cosmo and the calm, pragmatic Wanda may seem
like a (fairly) odd couple, but given that they’ve been together for 10,000
years, they’re obviously doing something right. Most stars of the silent era
didn’t survive the transition to sound, but Felix-who once shared screen-time
with Charlie Chaplin-did just fine and remains an icon. My favorite one: “Hey
pretty mama, wanna see me comb my hair really fast?” - Joseph Stanichar Still,
his nonsensical pick-up lines are ironically delightful. Even though Johnny’s
behavior borders on the chauvinistic, the show makes clear that he’s meant to be
the opposite of a role model, nearly always suffering some awful fate due to his
hubris. Created right before the realm of adult cartoons really took off, this
show was still marketed for kids but let lots of risque humor through under
Cartoon Network’s radar. It’s unlikely that a show like Johnny Bravo would be
made today. But thanks to Mike Lazzo, the character was repurposed in the 1990s
as the awkward, hostile host of a surrealist talk show that ended up launching
careers and inspiring a number of other great series (like Sealab 2021 and
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law) that similarly repurposed old Warner IP for our
modern amusement. On his own, most probably wouldn’t remember brief Hanna
Barbera creation Space Ghost. Allison KeeneĬreators: Alex Toth, William Hanna,
Joseph Barbera / Mike Lazzo An off-key antagonist who never saw something she
couldn’t be jealous of or use for her own motivations, Angelica’s greatest
legacy is making viewers realize she doesn’t represent their “terrible” sibling,
but more honestly themselves. The ultimate spoiled brat alpha child, Angelica
Pickles ran the baby Rugrats like her own syndicate. And Larry the Cucumber was
the biggest reason why, with his “Silly Songs with Larry” segments being the
most popular among both kids of the ‘90s and today in the show’s current
iteration, The VeggieTales Show. But in the 1990s, Veggie Tales became the
exceptional piece of genius pop culture in the typical Christian bookstore. Josh
JacksonĪfter all the cultural good that Christianity gave us over the last two
Millennia, the second half of the 20th century wasn’t exactly a high-water mark.
Since then, we’ve had another season in 2011 and two more on their way during
the ‘20s, ensuring these two doofuses’ influence throughout four decades. The
show managed to both satirize and celebrate the lowest common denominator of the
1990s. Josh Jacksonīeavis and Butt-Head made MTV’s lack of music much more
palatable. But he really just wants to be a folk-singer. Made in Mexico, Bender
is a sociopath of steel (er, well, iron, titanium, lead, zinc, dolomite and
nickel), who has kidnapped Jay Leno’s head and sent his own son to robot hell.

Peppa Pig is geared toward the youngest audience of any character on this list,
but the adorable piglet’s British accent and gentle humor have melted the hearts
of adults not just in the U.K. Many of these characters have expanded beyond
their cartoon origins into other media, but for the purposes of this list, we
will only be examining these characters as they appear in cartoons, originating
either from the show itself or corresponding comics and books.

hold within the realm of animation in the 2020s.

With the world of cartoons changing so dramatically, we decided it was time to
update our list of the top 50 cartoon characters of all time, taking into
account the cultural influence, relatability, and relevance these animated
humans, animals, vegetables, etc. Western cartoons have never been as varied as
they are now, and I believe they have the potential to reach the same cultural
status anime took decades ago in Japan. Many employ wittier humor, more complex
characters and deeper stories to engage those of any age, while even more target
teens or adults as their prime audience, giving them the ability to tell
relatable, powerful and hilarious stories within the realm of animation. No
longer are cartoons something only for children to enjoy on Saturday mornings.
Traditional cable networks have created new and exciting characters and worlds
in animation, while streaming platforms have allowed even more creators to make
the animated shows they want to make. Sure, new episodes of The Simpsons, Family
Guy, South Park and SpongeBob Squarepants are churned out each year like
clockwork, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg. Cartoons have changed a lot
in the decade since Paste originally published this list.

TIME ZONE CHANGES

They argue the measure could help businesses such as golf courses that could
draw more use with more evening daylight. Supporters say the change could
prevent a slight uptick in car crashes that typically occurs around the time
changes and point to studies showing a small increase in the rate of heart
attacks and strokes soon after the time change. Pallone cited a 2019 poll that
found 71% of Americans prefer to no longer switch their clocks twice a year.
Pallone backs ending the clock-switching but has not decided whether to support
daylight or standard time as the permanent choice.Īt the hearing, Beth Malow,
director of the Vanderbilt Sleep Division, argued daylight savings time makes it
harder to be alert in the morning, saying it "is like living in the wrong time
zone for almost eight months out of the year." It also can cause havoc on the
sleeping patterns of our kids and our pets." The House Energy and Commerce
committee held a hearing on the issue last week, where Representative Frank
Pallone, the committee's chairman, said, "The loss of that one hour of sleep
seems to impact us for days afterwards. Since 2015, about 30 states have
introduced legislation to end the twice-yearly changing of clocks, with some
states proposing to do it only if neighboring states do the same. The United
States will resume standard time in November. On Sunday, most of the United
States resumed daylight saving time, moving ahead one hour. The National
Association of Convenience Stores opposes the change, telling Congress this
month "we should not have kids going to school in the dark." "Pardon the pun,
but this is an idea whose time has come," he added. "If we can get this passed,
we don't have to do this stupidity anymore." "I know this is not the most
important issue confronting America, but it's one of those issues where there's
a lot of agreement," Rubio said. The change would help enable children to play
outdoors later and reduce seasonal depression, according to supporters. Senator
Marco Rubio, one of the bill's sponsors, said supporters agreed the change would
not take place until November 2023 after input from airlines and broadcasters. A
spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to say if she supports the
measure but said she was reviewing it closely.

The White House has not said whether Biden supports it. The House of
Representatives, which has held a committee hearing on the matter, must still
pass the bill before it can go to President Joe Biden to sign. The Senate
approved the measure, called the Sunshine Protection Act, unanimously by voice
vote. Senate on Tuesday passed legislation that would make daylight saving time
permanent starting in 2023, ending the twice-annual changing of clocks in a move
promoted by supporters advocating brighter afternoons and more economic
activity. WASHINGTON, March 15 (Reuters) - The U.S.

MASS MOCA MUSEUM

In the 1980s, Sprague began to face difficulties with global changes in the
electronics industry. The company was almost completely self-sufficient, holding
a radio station, orchestra, vocational school, research library, day-care
center, clinic, cooperative grocery store, sports teams, and a gun club with a
shooting range on the campus. Essentially the factory was a small city within a
city with employees working alongside friends, neighbors and relatives. This
department was responsible for research, design, and manufacturing of the
trigger for the atomic bomb and components used in the launch systems for the
Gemini space missions.Īt its peak during the 1960s, Sprague employed 4,137
workers in a community of 18,000. In addition to manufacturing electrical
components, Sprague had a large research and development department. During
World War II Sprague operated around the clock and employed a large female
workforce-not only due to the lack of men, but also because it took small hands
and manual dexterity to construct the small, hand-rolled capacitors. Sprague)
Sprague Electric Company was a local North Adams company, and it purchased the
Marshall Street complex to produce capacitors. In 1942 Arnold Print Works was
forced to close its doors and leave North Adams due to the low prices of cloth
produced in the South and abroad, as well as the economic effects of the Great
Depression. In addition to printing the textiles, Arnold Print Works expanded
and built their own cloth-weaving facilities in order to produce "grey cloth",
which was the crude, unfinished textile from which printed color cloth was made.
Arnold had offices in New York City and Paris. Arnold produced 580,000 yards or
330 miles of cloth per week. The industrial qualities of the buildings remain,
despite the conversion to a fine arts museumĪt its peak in 1905, Arnold print
works employed more than 3,000 workers and was one of the world's leading
producers of printed textiles. By 1900, every building but one in today's
Marshall Street complex was constructed. Despite a nationwide depression during
the 1870s Arnold Print Works purchased additional land along the Hoosic River
and constructed new buildings. Rebuilding started almost immediately and an
expanded complex was finished in 1874.

In December 1871, a fire swept through the Arnold Print Works factory and
destroyed eight of its buildings. Aiding their success were large government
contracts during the Civil War to supply cloth for the Union Army. They began
operating in 1862 and quickly took off. In 1860 the Arnold brothers arrived at
this site and set up their company with the latest equipment for printing cloth.
Since colonial times small-scale industries had been located on this strategic
peninsular location between the north and south branches of the Hoosic River.
These buildings, however, were not the first to occupy this site. The buildings
that MASS MoCA now occupies were originally built between 18 by the company
Arnold Print Works. Museum location and history Arnold Print Works MASS MoCA,
along with the Clark Art Institute and the Williams College Museum of Art
(WCMA), forms a trio of significant art museums in the northern Berkshires.
Starting in 2010, MASS MoCA has become the home for the Solid Sound Music
Festival. The festival, started in 2001, includes concerts in galleries for
three weeks during the summer. It is the home of the Bang on a Can Summer
Institute, where composers and performers from around the world come to create
new music. In addition to housing galleries and performing arts spaces, it also
rents space to commercial tenants. It has expanded since, including the 2008
expansion of Building 7 and the May 2017 addition of roughly 130,000 square feet
when Building 6 was opened. MASS MoCA originally opened with 19 galleries and
100,000 sq ft (9,300 m 2) of exhibition space in 1999.

It is one of the largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts
in the United States.īuilt by the Arnold Print Works, which operated on the site
from 1860 to 1942, the complex was used by the Sprague Electric company before
its conversion. The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art ( MASS MoCA) is a
museum in a converted Arnold Print Works factory building complex located in
North Adams, Massachusetts.

performances often re-add a long drum solo at the end. The band felt that they
had added too many overdubs while recording the song's initial version in the
studio, and ended up simplifying its composition and removing an extended drum
interlude. Sam Kiszka, the band's bassist, stated that the song's initial
iteration was far more complicated, with more percussion and busy guitar-work in
it. As an ode to our love of the blues, the lyrics were written as a narrative,
the way that many blues lyrics have been written." It had this complexity, this
mixture of jungle music and blues, and it made me think of a safari, hence the
title.

We were playing a bunch of old blues songs and Jake came up with this riff that
I fell in love with. We were doing some writing and recording at Plymouth Rock,
an old Michigan church that had been converted into a recording studio. Josh
Kiszka said of the song's initial conception: Beyond the Led Zeppelin
similarities, Loudwire also compared the song's vocal and guitar riff style to
the work of Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses, Bon Scott of AC/DC and Mick Jagger of The
Rolling Stones. The song's sound has drawn comparisons to the work of Led
Zeppelin, both in the song's production sounding similar to rock music from the
1960s, and Josh Kiszka's vocals mirroring Robert Plant's "signature wail,
phrasing, and articulation". The band performed the song live on national
television on Last Call With Carson Daly on October 31, 2017. The release of
From the Fires pushed "Safari Song" to chart on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs
chart at number 44, staying on the chart for four weeks. Shortly afterwards, on
November 10, 2017, a compilation EP, From the Fires, containing "Safari Song"
and the other three songs from Black Smoke Rising, and four newly recorded
songs, was released. The song was released as the second single from the EP,
after " Highway Tune", in October 2017, and was the second most added song to
rock radio.

The song was initially released on the band's debut EP - Black Smoke Rising in
April 2017. It topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart in February
2018. It was their second single off of their EP Black Smoke Rising, and their
compilation EP From the Fires. " Safari Song" is a song by American rock band
Greta Van Fleet.
