RBA TO LIFT THE CASH RATE TO 3.35% BY FEBRUARY 2023

July 22 2022 • Clock 5 mins

We have revised our terminal cash rate forecast in this tightening cycle to
3.35% from 2.6%. The RBA clearly assesses the neutral cash rate as being above
our own assessment. They are likely to continue tightening aggressively given
the fear of rising inflation expectations.

The RBA Board has lifted the intensity of its rhetoric in the July Minutes. The
option of a 25 basis point increase is quickly dismissed, economic prospects are
upbeat, while the need to contain inflationary expectations is paramount,
another 50 basis points in August seems highly likely.

WHY WE EXPECT ANOTHER 50 BASIS POINTS IN AUGUST AND THEN A PAUSE

July 8 2022 • 5 mins

The case is strong for another 50 basis point lift in the RBA cash rate in
August to move the cash rate into the neutral zone from stimulatory and
emphasise its commitment to restoring inflation to the target range. Then a
pause in to assess the impact of the rapid 175 basis points of tightening. An
eventual shift back to 25 basis point increments is likely after the next

July 5 2022 • 5 mins

The RBA Board lifted the cash rate by 50 basis points to 1.35%.That move was
expected. The details in the Statement indicate nothing to dissuade us that the
next move in August, following the release of the June quarter Inflation Report,
will also be 50 basis points. To support our view that the Board will then pause
we will need to see a significantly different Statement in August than we have
seen in June and July.

SOME MORE THOUGHTS ON THE RBA

June 9 2022 • 5 mins

Our profile for the RBA tightening cycle entails an end to the cycle at a cash
rate of 2.35% by February next year. The pace of the cycle will be comparable
with other central banks. That will rely on an easing in inflation pressures
through 2023 from 6.6% in 2022 to 3% in 2023 and a sharp slowdown in growth from
4% in 2022 to 2% in 2023.
