Difficult and dangerous travel conditions are likely on Thanksgiving Day for parts of the Rockies and High Plains. Tonight The low pressure system that has wreaked havoc on the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. the past few days will slowly slide along the southern New England coast through late tonight or very early Thanksgiving morning. High pressure will gradually take its place. Wintry precipitation will only be found in northern New Hampshire and most of Maine. Expect light to moderate snow here early on, with perhaps some freezing rain and sleet mixed in. As the night goes on, this wintry mix will gradually transition to rain from southwest to northeast. Roads could still be icy and snowy in places, especially over the higher elevations. This includes Interstates 91, 93 and 293. There could also be some remaining showers across western portions of the Northeast into the central Appalachians before Midnight, then drier weather moves into the region. There could be some portions of roads that are wet, but no major travel concerns are expected. However, winds could remain breezy to strong through the late evening, which will then slowly ease early Thursday morning. The strongest winds will occur right along the coast, but some minor air travel delays are possible for major hubs in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. On the other side of the country, an upper-level weather system will start to join forces with an Arctic cold front. These will bring light to briefly moderate snow showers to the northern Rockies in Idaho, western Montana and western Wyoming. There could also be some wet snow or a rain/snow mix in eastern Montana and northern Wyoming, while rain showers extended across southern Oregon, northern California and northwestern Nevada. It is possible for light freezing rain and/or snow to mix in with the rain across these southern areas of the Northwest. Black ice will be the main concern for parts of Interstates 15, 84 and 90, though some snowy areas cannot be ruled out. Otherwise, expect roads to be wet where any rain falls. Thanksgiving (Thursday) The biggest concern for travel on Thanksgiving Day will be found in the Rockies and northern High Plains. The upper-level weather system will continue to interact with an Arctic cold front dropping south across the north-central U.S. Light to moderate snow will be found across western Montana, most of Idaho, the northern half of Wyoming and northern Nevada and Utah during the morning. Moderate to even heavy snow will then spread farther south and east for the rest of Thanksgiving into the rest of Wyoming and Utah along with western South Dakota, western Nebraska and western and north Colorado. Flurries or light snow could linger as well for western Montana, Idaho and most of Nevada. Icy and snow-packed roads will be likely throughout the day for northern portions of Interstate 15 and western portions of Interstate 84 and 90. There will be rapidly deteriorating road conditions for stretches of Interstates 25, 70 and 80 as the day goes on. Flash freezes may affect road travel in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and the Nebraska Panhandle Thursday evening as temperatures rapidly drop along the Arctic cold front. Heavy snow intensity along with blowing snow will lead to poor visibility and make for difficult and dangerous travel. Expect icy and snow-packed roads as you travel to and from your Turkey Day location. This will be especially true across most of Wyoming along Interstate 25 from Cheyenne to Casper and Interstate 80 from Rock Springs, Wyo., to Scottsbluff, Neb. At the same time, a developing low pressure system will move across the far southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley. A few showers will be found across southern and eastern Texas into Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Roads will become wet in spots as a result but should not create significant travel concerns.
