A big chunk of that $1.7 billion investment was a $500 million grant for the GM Lansing Grand River factory. With the possibility of a second Trump administration on the horizon cutting back on federal investment in EV manufacturing, the Energy Department is scrambling to finalize the grants while Biden is still in the White House. “We are working as fast as we can to finalize as much as we can – to get the commitments in contract with all of those who have been selected,” U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in an interview with Reuters. “We have a few months to make sure that we’re doing that.” “There’s a whole array of considerations with respect to [the delay], and we are in conversation about it,” Granholm said when asked about the delay in the grant money coming through. A GM spokesperson said it is “still in the negotiation phase of the grant” and declined to forecast what might happen if the grant was not approved. Granholm emphasized that government has a key role in keeping the American auto sector competitive in the global economy. “America’s automakers are in this amazing race to dominate this industry and to ensure that as EVs take over the global market, places like Detroit aren’t just keeping up but setting the pace,” she said. The Biden administration is helping automakers “cut costs and secure supply chains and innovate new technologies and help [American automakers] be globally competitive,” said Granholm. “We are not just bringing a knife to a gunfight. We are bringing an armada now.” Currently, the Lansing Grand River plant builds the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5 sedans, which are based on the Alpha platform. Before it was discontinued, it produced the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro. As production of the aging Alpha platform dials back, as we’ve seen with the Camaro’s discontinuation, the GM Lansing Grand River plant is expected to produce GM BEV Prime vehicles, including the Chevy Corvette EV and various all-electric Cadillac sedans.
