* 00:00Microsoft is said to have been hacked as part of a suspected Russian
campaign that had several U.S. government agencies including the National
Nuclear Security Administration. Sources say the attack took advantage of the
widespread use of software from a company called Solar Winds. Now let's get
the details from our reporter Bruce Einhorn. Bruce how serious is actually
this latest development. It's it's serious. And the more we learn about it it
seems like it's getting worse. So far we know that there have been three
state governments local governments ISE U.S. Departments of State Treasury
Commerce Homeland Security. We know the Energy Department and its National
Nuclear Security Administration which is in charge of securing the nation's
nuclear weapons and material as well as Microsoft and other companies. So
yeah it's pretty widespread. The victims all American. They're overwhelmingly
American. But there are other other countries that also have companies that
have been breached. So among those are Canada Mexico the U.K. and several
others according to Microsoft. How long do we know. This has could have
potentially been going up. Well it seems that the original hack dates back to
March and so it's possible that the hackers have been foraging through
systems for almost nine months and potentially even a lot of malware doing
other things. We're really only at this point we can speculate on just how
much damage they did.
