In response to a growing need to protect natural resources, homes and lives
during wildfire outbreaks, Aerostar piloted a Thunderhead Balloon program in
2021 to monitor active U.S. wildfires. The stratospheric balloons performed
station-seeking above active fires, collecting visible and thermal imagery data
valuable for containment efforts.

In 2021, Aerostar demonstrated that a stratospheric constellation of
communications can be established over a battlefield using a mobile ad hoc
network, covering over 200 miles. These networked balloons allowed users to
track the position of other devices on the ground, provided network
connectivity, and created voice communications coverage.
