The Solutions Brief—the latest in CED’s Sustaining Capitalism series—comes as confidence in America’s elections is still recovering from the lows of 2020. This year’s election, however, is the first in which generative AI is widely available. The growing popularity of this technology, along with the rise of social media as a news source, offers greater opportunities for bad actors to spread disinformation. Aging voting machines and software also leave the US election system vulnerable. As the Solutions Brief emphasizes, conducting a secure, credible, and accessible election not only ensures public trust in elections but also positions the US as a global beacon of democracy. “Business leaders, as trusted members of their communities, have a key role in strengthening civic engagement and building resistance to disinformation,” said John Gardner, Vice President, Public Policy at CED. “Both policymakers and private sector leaders must act now to ensure that the 2024 election is secure, credible, and accessible.” Key… Continue reading ... Morell, the distinguished former acting director of the CIA and a media commentator on U.S. intelligence and national security issues. Now known as the Michael J. Morell Center for Intelligence and Security Studies, the Center is a resource to prepare the security professionals of tomorrow by bringing together students, faculty and security practitioners for training, research and education in the areas of intelligence, national security and cybersecurity. Morell is a Cuyahoga Falls native who graduated from The University of Akron in 1980 with a degree in economics. He also has a master’s degree in economics from Georgetown University. Before his retirement, he served for 33 years as a CIA intelligence analyst and a manager of analysts , and a leader in roles that included acting director, deputy director and director for intelligence, a position that oversees all of the CIA’s intelligence analysts. “I am deeply honored that the University of Akron Board of Trustees today approved the renaming of the current Center for Intelligence and Security Studies the Michael J. Morell Center for Intelligence and Security Studies,” Morell said. “The naming brings me full circle, as the University provided me with a world-class education, preparing me for a career at CIA. The research project is a collaboration between Professor Daniela Shebitz, Ph.D., who chairs the Department of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, and Assistant Professor Karen Woodruff, Ph.D., from the Department of Elementary and Physical Education. The purpose of the project is to measure students’ understanding of climate change and its impact on the environment, as part of a broader research project on climate change education. “The idea of the survey is to see how our students consider climate change, understand the causes and consequences of our changing climate on a local and global scale, and take actions to lower their environmental impact,” Shebitz said. “One of our goals is to have students more aware of the connection between our health and our air, our water and the overall environment.” Over 875 students have completed the survey, and the researchers aim to gather data from 1,000 students by the end of this month. The survey was modeled after one developed at Yale University and covers topics such as global warming and sustainability, policy changes, and individual actions to combat climate change. The researchers plan to use the survey’s findings to shape future initiatives both on and off campus. The Yale Climate Survey authors have given Kean researchers permission to use their tool, allowing for comparisons between Kean students and over 100,000 respondents globally. According to preliminary findings, Kean students are more likely… Continue reading ... The ESR Group now expects the 30-year fixed mortgage rate to end the year at 6.4 percent, up from the 5.9 percent predicted in last month’s forecast. Strong headline jobs numbers and hotter-than-expected inflation data had led financial markets to price in a less aggressive rate-cutting path by the Federal Reserve, and while the ESR Group notes that labor market indicators are mixed and disinflation will likely resume, it also believes that recent data are unlikely to provide the Fed with the “greater confidence” it needs to begin easing monetary policy in the near term. Still, the ESR Group expects existing home sales will trend upwards in 2024 due in part to increased activity by households likely needing to move due to life events – and who are thus less sensitive to the interest rate lock-in effect. The ESR Group cited the recent trend upward in new home listings, as well as comparative strength in the latest reading of the ‘good time to sell’ component of the Fannie Mae Home Purchase Sentiment Index®, as evidence that housing market activity is likely to continue its gradual thaw in… Continue reading ...
